Right, because the only Palm users who might want to use GPS are Treo-owners. Grr.
Don't be too upset it doesn't work on other palms. You could get the same setup basically from gamin. The Mobile 10x. Problem is, XT doesn't work well on the Palm OS, on treos or on any other palms. It causes resets on virgin units. Works well for a while, then does its own soft reset or locks up. BTW, unfortunately, this same XT software in the Winmobile flavor works fine.
Don't take my word for it, check out the Garmin forums at Brighthand to see all the problems folks have had with XT and Palm. After many tries at different upgrades and versions, I have inserted my bluetooth brick in the desk drawer, and taken all the XT software off of my Treo 755p. Now my unit is stable again.
Itīs really a shame that palm donīt give support for its PDA customers.Where is the compatibility of this GPS with Palm TX or E2? Now only smartphone owners needs GPS? It is really, really very disapointing!!! RE: No TX support on XTKultiVator @ 2/17/2008 4:15:47 PM #
Yes - another in a long line of big let downs from Palm. I think their Mission Statement goes something like... "Buy a Treo, a Centro or get the f*ck out of here". Unfortunately for Palm, most people are going with option 3.
I have the TomTom based GPS kit and it is great on my Treo 700p. I've updated the maps & software once from TomTom and the upgrade price was very reasonable. I'm curious why Palm switched software companies for their GPS software. One thing that is interesting is that if you try to buy TomTom maps off their website for say a trip to Europe, the exchange rate makes them really overpriced. I don't think they've switched - Palm just have a habit of offering more than one GPS solution at any one time. Palm E users used to be offered various "Via Michelin" GPS bundles back in the day, whilst Tungsten T3 users were offered TomTom options. Was more down to marketing than anything else - which is what you have to rely on at Palm when your R&D team are handcuffed/under-funded/non-existent. ;-) BTW - TomTom are based in Holland and since the dollar is quite weak at the moment against a strong Euro, this probably explains the price seeming high... plus us Europeans get ripped off on technology, fuel, beer, cars, you name it. Don't know why I'm smiling. RE: Why did Palm move to Garmin
TomTom announced last year that they were looking to phase out the add-on GPS solutions (read: PDA/smartphones) in favor of their own branded hardware solutions.
That's also probably why we never saw an "official" update to add 755p support to the 1st Palm GPS Navigator kit with TT6 (though the Treo 680 patch to 6.03 works just fine) and no Centro support to Palm's 2nd TomTom kit (the one with the pre-loadeed miniSD card). So Palm probably moved to Garmin more as a last man standing option instead of wanting to sever ties with TomTom. TomTom's atrocious support policies could also have had something to do with the move as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see Garmin pull the plug on their Palm OS software development soon, given the general decline in that market + the explosion in popularity of standalone GPS units. IMO, Palm's failure to ship a Treo or handheld with integrated GPS is a very bad move. No one wants another BT receiver kludge if there's a more elegant solution to the problem. If the 800w/Drucker does indeed ship with integrated GPS look for a strong push for a monthly subscription service ala TeleNav.
Does anyone know if you can copy the software to a differant SD card? I have a 4gig in my Centro with lots of MP3 and such. Changing out the SD card is a pain on the Cento so its a deal breaker for me.
Thaks.
