Analysts Continue to Downgrade Palm

And the hits just keep on coming. After yesterdays surprising revenue warning, the analysts are chiming in today with further negative reports and many are beginning to question Palms long-term viability. Tech Trader Daily has a good round up of analyst notes and MarketWatch has published a detailed article on the situation as well citing many of the same sources.

Jim Suva, at Citigroup reports: He Maintains a Sell rating, but adds Palm to his "Top Picks Live" list, as a short. Target to $1.20, form $3.75. He says the consensus "is underestimating the fundamental product issuees leading to even more sales and profit pressures ahead." He has "concerns for liquidity" for FY 2010 due to lack of cash flow and increased competition. "We are not convinced Palm's new products," due in the 2009 first half, "are strong enough or will come fast enough to overcome current product and economic challenges."

Palm Reports Preliminary Q2 FY09 Financial Results

 <pheedo:origLink>http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/7242/palm-reports-preliminary-q2-fy09-financial-results/</pheedo:origLink>

Palm Inc. today released its preliminary results for its second quarter of fiscal year 2009, which ended Nov. 28, 2008. In short, the news is pretty brutal with Palm's total revenue experiencing a massive contraction during the past couple of months. Revenues dropped nearly 45% from the same quarter last year, and could see a decline of as much as 48% from the previous quarter.

Palm places the blame on its "maturing" product line and "unprecedented dynamics in the global markets" given the current economic meltdown. The company vows to reign in costs even further and goes on to detail some of its latest cost-savings initiatives in the accompanying press release.

Palm Black Friday Handheld and Smartphone Discounts

 <pheedo:origLink>http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/7248/palm-black-friday-handheld-and-smartphone-discounts/</pheedo:origLink>

In a welcome reprieve from the usual policy of a handful of pre-selected discounted products, Palm is offering users some flexibility for their annual Black Friday sale. Effective immediately, Palm is offering two different automatic discounts for users to purchase whatever they desire. Users can take $50 off any purchase between $150 and $299.99 and $100 off any order of $300 or more. We've combed through Palm's online store to find the best deals and uses of this discount, which is currently ongoing and expires December 1st 2008. Full details about the sale can be found here.

By far the best deals for the $50 discount would be a Palm TX (Slightly over $200 after discount if the order is padded to $300+) or perhaps the older and less capable Tungsten E2 ($150 after discount) handheld. For the remaining PDA faithful, this Palm sale may very likely be one of the final chances to pick up a brand-new, factory-sealed Palm OS handheld with warranty and from a reputable seller. To date, the Palm TX remains Palm's only current Palm OS device with WiFi wireless networking and its only product overall with a 320x480 screen resolution (review here).

This month's Palm Channelsource newsletter for its reseller partners has a large list of Palm peripherals now classified as having reached end-of-life status. In addition, it also makes the Treo 680 EOL status official, which has been expected for some time.

A rather surprising product that has just met its demise is Palm's most recent GPS Navigator by Garmin kit. This was Palm's only branded GPS solution officially listed as compatible with the Centro and was Palm's response to TomTom's withdrawal from the PDA-based GPS software market.
