Comments on: WebOS Alternatives to Epocrates

Rizwan Parvez, a medical practitioner in the psychiatry field, has compiled a handy list of the alternatives to Epocrates for WebOS users in the healthcare world. Since the sudden and tragic cancellation of the WebOS version of Epocrates, many healthcare professionals have expressed concerned about their options short of jumping to another mobile platform. Thankfully, there are a surprising amount of options available, as Rizwan discusses here.

You may also remember Rizwan as the winner of Palm's January 2009 Celebrate with Palm blog contest to win a trip to Las Vegas to see the Pre and WebOS unveiling.

Web OS doesn't have much

Epocrates was nice. I preferred Tarascon's Pharacopiea because it's formatted very much like the paperback version we all carried in med school. The heavy hitter of electronic medical texts, SkyScape, has never been compatable with WebOS. They work with Android, iPhone, WinMob and even Symbian. Of course, they are supporting Palm OS. WebOS is a poor choice for a physician who wants to carry materials around with him. Palm OS has always been the premier OS for physicians, IMO.
At least we have "Angry Birds."

Palm has one more last chance.

unlike Apple and Google, HP/Palm has no brand cachet. no one's going to buy a hardware gadget because it says HP/Palm on it, though they clearly do for Apple and Google.

Europe and the US get an unlocked GSM Pre 2, and Canada today gets it in the behind with a North American first "GSM subsidy-locked phone".

So Palm and HP can take this pad (and any other of its products) and *self censored*.

Personally, I think that it would be total suicide for HP to use a stodgy/dated/recycled HP Slate formfactor & design for the PalmPad.....and it would be an added dose of cyanide for them to not offer a retail-oriented, wi-fi model.

No one really has any clue how to approach the tablet market yet. Apple comes close but the iPad is crippled (as usual) by a dearth of features and the usual reliance on iTunes and its non-expandable storage.

Samsung could have sold a gazillion Galaxy Tabs this holiday season if they had a nice $299 or even $399 wi-fi only model. The first company to market with an intelligently designed wi-fi tablet with good build quality, solid battery life, expandable storage, and decent viewing angles on its LCD with a $299-$399 pricetag for 7" and 10" models will absolutely clean up. I wish Mike Cane was still around to help me lambast Archos for managing to bungle COUNTLESS opportunities to dominate the non-iOS tablet market.
