Comments on: Whitman: HP to Decide on WebOS Within Weeks

meg whitman hp ceo According to a new report from AllThingsD, HP's CEO Meg Whitman is about ready to end the ongoing saga over the uncertain future of WebOS within the next two weeks. Speaking to a French newspaper, she reportedly revealed:

Q: What will you do with your operating system webOS?

A: We should announce our decision in the next two weeks. This is not an easy decision, because we have a team of 600 people which is in limbo. We need to have another operating system.

The original interview, in French, can be found here, or via Google Translate if you prefer.

Deja vu

At the end of this two weeks there will be an announcement about how they will decide what to do with Web OS by the end of the year/beginning of next.

They are obviously hoping against hope that some buyer will step up.

Seems like this could have been handled so much better. The question I ask is how much value of the Palm brand was lost by the former CEO's announcement that WEB OS was dead. Me thinks it was a good chunk....

Also instead of a fire sale of $100/$150 they could have say put it at $200/$250 and this would have caused sales to spread out over a longer period of time...then they could have gone searching for a buyer.

Crazy thing is that if you go to ebay and look at prices, it is hard to get a Touch Pad for under $200.

The long-timers around here may remember the various, ahem, "commentary" between a certain longtime PIC poster and Dianne "Hackbod" Hackborn when she was with Palm (and Be before that).

She's been at Google for a few years now and is now making the rounds today explaining some of the details behind the intricacies and clearing up some misconceptions about hardware acceleration in Honeycomb and ICS versions of Android:

Worth a read for FINALLY clearing up some stuff that I had not yet seen definitively addressed previously.

When I saw the thread yesterday, I knew I heard that name somewhere before.....

Yes interesting read. My own feeling is that many developers seem to ignore the use of concurrency in java, which is quite advanced. Many hiccups come that.
