Comments on: WIPClip Wireless Modem for Visor Debuts

Tellus Technology has introduced the WIPClip CDPD wireless modem Springboard module for the Visor. While it can operate at up to 19.2 kbps, actual throughput will typically be 12 to 14 kbps. The WIPClip can recharge its battery through the same Hot-Sync/recharging cradle and charging cable that will be available for the recently announced VisorPhone. The WIPClip is being displayed at the Global Xchange 2000 in Chicago in the Handspring booth. Tellus expects to begin shipping the WIPClip early next year for an estimated price of under $300.

A wireless mod...

So with this mod. and a few other wireless springboards, I'm not seeing the need for a "special sheilded Visor". SO indeed it can be done with a stock unit.

So what's up with that, @ctivelink?

Two-way paging uses a higher power level to send a message than a cell phone protocol in order to have fewer transceiver sites. This higher, though more intermittant, power level could be the reason behind the special shielding.

Soon, very soon anyone who wishes will have access to all the knowledge and companionship and entertainment in their pocket. I think this will elevate the so called WEB to new heights.

Does the Web really work on a small device? I don't think so (yet). Many pages don't scale, standards are in flux, and the user experience isn't there yet (I don't care what the device is). Connectivity is the first step, but we need to figure out what will really work w.r.t. hand-held information access and communications services. WAP might be a part of it, but the user experience is still pretty bad.
