Comments on: IrDA to Demo Infrared Payment System at CES

The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) along with Palm Inc., Visa, and several other financial transaction companies will demonstrate a new financial messaging standard at the Consumer Electronics Show. They will show credit, debit, or checking data going from a Palm handheld via the Palm's infrared port to a Point-of-Sales (POS) terminal. The authorization request is then sent to a processing center and after verification, a payment authorization message is sent back to the terminal to finalize the transaction and transfer a receipt to the Palm. The process is complete in a matter of seconds.

Not PayPal

I'm still feeling bent about PayPal. This reads like the news the early adopters of PayPal were waiting for. I wonder if there'll be any capability to make transactions if you're not a real merchant. I mean anyone will be able to buy a cup of coffee I'm sure but what if I just want to send someone $50...

Not unless you both subscribe to some sort of financial transaction service that can actually move the money from one account to another. That was the great thing about the PayPal Palm app; it handled that part of it for you. I only hope that as buying with handhelds becomes more common, another PayPal-like service will start up.
