Comments on: Palm Begins Cutting Jobs

Last month, when Palm announced that they expected their next financial quarter to be a rocky one, they said they would be laying off about 250 employees and contractors, or 10% to 15% of their total workforce. Palm began handing out the pink slips this morning. A company spokesperson would not say if any departments are being hit particularly hard and said both regular employees and and contractors are being hit. "Every part of Palm has been looked at."

Palm needs more than a Golden Tongue

This device we call a Palm needs more than just an individual announcing the appropriate response to the media. A leader of this Company has to be keeping track of sales and above all be visible right NOW. Palm has THE device for every pocket; Get out there and start talking. If you believe in your product, tell others about it. Many believe that Palm has crawled into a hole for protection against "Wall Street". Ask the Question: Would you give up your Palm and GO BACK to a dateBook? I don't think so. If you believe in what you are doing, don't hide-get out there!!!! Don't retreat. Let's see some courage!!!!

not enough "sales"

When was the last time I saw an advertisement for Palm? Hell, I've NEVER seen an advertisement for Palms, except maybe for a small add in the back of a computer magazine, and in those everyone already has heard of Palms and what they can do.

What Palm needs to do at a time like this is to get onto the TV and do some serious advertising. Show people what they do. I work at Staples and people come in asking about Palms, knowing nothing and not even knowing that we carry them, they just heard about them from their brother's wife's sister's dog's uncle.
But they always walk away amazed and completely interested, wondering why they bother with a pen and paper anymore.

Get some TV advertisements out, show some of the cool things you can do with a Palm. Especially on the cheaper models, like the m10x series (now down to 200$cdn!) which will appeal to the larger, lower echelon of people. This will help get the word out about Palms and bring more people "into our family" =)

I gotta agree...

Theres nothing wrong with the product they have... I haven't met a single person who wasn't completely satisfied with their Palm and there's a hell of a lot of market out there.. Go get it!

But there have been advertisements. At least here in the Silicon Valley.

Billboards: One example is the one with the naked lady and a Palm V. The way she was positioned didn't show anything but it implied she was naked. It caused quite a controversy. Many people were saying "What does that have to do with Palm handheld?" It definitely was eye-catching though. :)

TV ad: It takes place at a subway station. A lady is on one train, a man on another train going in the opposite direction. Their eyes meet and they are definitely attracted to each other. The trains are about to leave the station, so she pulls out her Palm V and points it at him, he pulls out his and she beams her phone number to him at the last minute. It was a cute commercial.

Granted, I haven't seen that tv ad (or any new ones) in quite a while, but they are out there. So they are trying. Just not hard enough.

Yes, there are a few palm ads and they are the lamest things in creation. Palm needs to get out there and talk to users, not just the computer techno folks, but the everyday people from my teen age daughters and nephew who are palm users to the women who post on the high tech housewife board. Soccer Moms use Palms, Ladies who lunch use palms I have been at community meetings and everyone pulled out some version of a palm to take notes. Ever see a palm add with any person of color in in them. Not!
Minorities use Palms.
I see visor ads on billboards in downtown philadelphia, on bus shelters. When a person thinks about buying a PDA after seeing those Visor ads, also in many popular Magazines, from Glamour, to Mens's Fitness, what does Palm think they're going to buy Palms marketing is lame!. I don't know who's getting pinkslips but I'd be handing them out to marketing and the ad agency. I wrote Palm a few years ago and told them that they wewre missing the boat with there advertising. I didn't receive or expect a response.

There is also at least one huge (but boring) Visor ad in Chicago along the highway. I don't remember exactly where, but I think on the Ohio St exit ramp off I-94?
