Comments on: IDC Lowers Predicted Handheld Sales

IDC has changed several of its predictions about handheld sales for this year, according to Cnet. Previously, the market research firm had predicted that the number of handhelds sold in the U.S. in 2001 would be as much as 20% above 2000. Since the slowing of the U.S. economy, IDC has lowered that forcast to somewhere between a 15% increase to no growth at all. The wide range is an indication that IDG finds today's market to be very uncertain.

IDC also now says that Pocket PC will not take away as much of Palm's share of the U.S. market as it had previously thought. It sees Microsoft's handheld OS with 15% to 25% of the market by the end of the year.

IDC = Inaccurate Definition of Consulting

Finally, IDC starts understanding that there is a real world...

Pocket PC to overtake Palm... Why not? Depends on how much Microsoft entertains IDC staff...

Having worked with them, I know how much crap they accept to digest in order not to offend their big customers...

You start wondering if they ever really look at their market surveys...

And then all the sudden their projections are so far off from reality that they admit that they goofed...

Palm OS will continue to dominate the market through 2005

"The company predicts that the Palm OS will continue to dominate the market through at least 2005."

We hear from a lot of people predicting that the Palm OS will be swept away by the Microsoft juggernaught in the near future, I just wanted to make sure that as many people as possible noticed that a major industry analyst had predicted that the Palm OS will continue to dominate the market through at least 2005.

That gives Palm Inc. plenty of time to come out with OS 5 and ARM chips. Ignore what the doomsayers and PPC-trolls say, the Palm OS will continue to dominate the market through at least 2005.

p.s. The Palm OS will continue to dominate the market through at least 2005.

I guess most of the Palm users are coming from Windows CE, I don't think they will go back to Windows CE even microsoft improved their system a bit.

It is unlike a desktop computer, we can't just simply ungrade the OS, the fact is you need to give up your old PPC or HPC and buy a new one! This is the reason I still stick by the Palm Vx.
