Comments on: Save the PalmPilots, don't become the next Apple

The mercury center has a letter up that was written to the CEO of 3com. The letter details how the authors think that Palm is set to lose the next OS war and how they can be better prepared to take on the monstrosity that is Microsoft.

Relax

Everybody needs to relax. Palm OS 5 will be great. The new Handspring devices should also add new life. Try reading my article at http://www.pimpoint.com/palmos.htm to find out why we do not have to worry.

Just read the article you wrote, it's nothing but boasting about the Palm OS. Perhaps next time you can write something more substantial. The Mercury Center article mentioned some good points. Palm is a great platform and I love it (have a IIIx now, had a PPro previous) but it does look like they are falling a bit lax with the OS -- I know, don't fix something that's not broke, but they need to start making some changes to it, whether it's small or large.

3COM must make PALM OS available on more devices. The old strategy of selling hardware+software wont work. Just like the letter, the strategy is proliferation. If 3COM does not port PALM OS to other platforms, PALM wont survive.

Market share will quickly erode when the market is just starting to grow. 3 years ago, there were 3 PDAs available. A year ago, there were 7 PDA. Went to PC store, last week, there must 20 PDAs, 15 of them use Windows CE.

I agree! I think it won't happend the same thing than with Apple. Now Palm can
take advantage of its useful features and to win its part of the market.
I promote it every time at my job.

Where do you get Palm OS 5?

OS 5

The word has been that OS 4 will be the next release, then when 5 is released it will be a total breakthrough. It is rumored to have support to utillize a color display. I would imagine moves are already being made by Palm to do this as well as include many features already included in Windows CE devices.
