Comments on: Pre Dropping to $150?

Rumor: Let's all take a moment to thank the Maker (or other preferred deity) for anonymous tipsters, who yesterday tipped off Precentral.net to the news that the Palm Pre will likely be dropping to $149.99 (after mail-in rebate, boo) at Sprint's "indirect partner retail dealers", starting from today. It would logically follow that the same price will also apply at Sprint's own corporate stores.

The leaked price list also details price drops on other retail Palm products that are purchased with contacts: the Treo 755p @ $99.99, the 800w @ $49.99, the Treo Pro @ $199.99 and the Centro @ $29.99. The full leaked price list is posted after the jump.

Great idea

This may lure some people who wanted an iPhone to get a pre. Now it will be 50 dollars cheaper with the1200 less then the iPhone for its service.

I don't think that they would do this out of the goodness of their hearts. Business must be slower than expected or a replacement is in the wings. Possibly trying to lock in as many as they can into Sprint while they have an exclusive deal.

They could probably start cranking out with 16GB and 32GB Pres with little effort. This would allow them to compete better with the iPhone and get them media attention as they come out with "new" models for the holiday season.

I don't put much music and video on my Pre either. But that's in part because it only has 8GB in the first place. That's really only room for a subset of my iTunes music library and a handful of videos if I want to leave a few GB for pictures and other data.

Because of this, I carry a 160GB iPod Classic. With a 16 or 32GB Pre I can carry all my music and latest podcasts and have plenty of room for video and can realistically leave my iPod at home most of the time.

Business is slower than expected - if analysts are to be believed. I'd expect a replacement in 2010.

I disagree - they *should* be cranking out 16 and 32 gig models - as the Pre doesn't compete well with the higher end iPhone models.
