Majeck Review
Ed Hardy (ed@palminfocenter.com)

A quick look through our Palm Graveyard will show that many Palms die after being dropped. There are numerous possible solutions to this, some better than others. A new one, called Majeck attaches an elastic strap to your Palm V or Vx to make it very difficult to drop.

It's Majeck!Majeck was invented by Jeff Freed, an amateur magician. After almost dropping his Palm Vx, he took an idea from some of his magic props and made a little device that attaches to a Palm V series to make it easier to hold on to. Majeck is shaped like a stylus and slips into the channel slot that your stylus isn't in. The secret is a super strong elastic strip that runs from the top to the bottom of the Majeck that you can slip your fingers under when you are holding onto the back of your Palm. The strip prevents you from dropping your Palm if it starts to slip.

I tried it out and let one of my female co-workers try it, too. It worked fine for the both of us, despite our very differently sized hands. There isn't any learning process involved in using it. You just slip the Majeck into the channel slot, slide your fingers under the strap, and grip the back of the Palm like you normally would. The elastic strap held my Palm solidly. I could relax my fingers completely and the Palm wouldn't drop. Naturally, I didn't try as hard as I could to fling my Palm off but I had a feeling of confidence that it was safe. Mr. Freed sent me a spare elastic strap and I tried to break it. I pulled on it hard enough to get nervous that if I actually broke it I'd get a fairly nasty welt and gave up.

MajeckMajeck can also serve as a replacement stylus. It even has cool little green plastic tip that seems to glow in regular light. The elastic strap comes in five different colors that you can specify when you order but the main body is white.

Naturally, Majeck isn't for everyone. The channel slot that Majeck needs is also needed if you want to use the plastic cover. And only the V series has channel slots so right now you can't get a Majeck for any other model, though Mr. Freed is working on that. Also, Majeck is put together by Mr. Freed out of some items he bought over the counter. That's how he can sell them for such a low cost but the fact that it is homemade is clear. If you are the type that is likely to be bothered by this, you might not like it.

During the introductory phase, for less than $10 you can have two Majecks. They come with a 30 day money back guarantee and a 1 year warranty but Mr. Freed doesn't take any responsibility for costs you incur if you do drop your Palm while using Majeck, which makes sense.
