Motorola to Release Palm-Based Smartphone in 2002

Posted By: Ed on Monday, September 25, 2000 9:04:24 AM

Palm and Motorola have announced that they will collaborate in creating a tri-band GSM smartphone that will run the Palm OS. The companies say the device will contain a larger color screen than standard mobile phones, include Palm's HotSync and over-the-air synchronization using Motorola's Starfish TrueSync software, and feature General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) compatibility. It is expected to be the first in a series of smartphones from the two companies, and will be sold through Motorola in 2002.

This isn't any surprise to industry insiders; Analysts have been predicting the the two companies would make an announcement like this for months. Wireless access to the Internet is clearly going to be the most important use for handhelds in the future and Palm Inc. wants to make sure its OS is the one everyone uses to do this.

 Palm Smartphone Running Epoc?
Ed @ 10/1/2000 9:14:30 AM #

Did any of you see this article from ZDNet UK about this announcement? Here it is for reference:
http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/2000/38/ns-18085.html

What has me confused is the article announces without blinking an eye that the Palm/Motorola smartphone will run the Epoc operating system, which doesn't make a darn bit of sense to me. Why would Palm collaborate on an Epoc device? Is this a misprint?

Carl Y. has indicated that PalmOS will be running on TOP of EPOC in this critter.
Go figure.

So's PalmOS can have elements of a real-time OS for live threaded comms, at a guess.
