700p ROM Update May Use 680 Bluetooth Stack

Posted By: Tim Carroll on Sunday, March 18, 2007 10:57:17 PM

Following their recent 1.10 update, the folks over at Softick have released Softick Audio Gateway 1.11, now with full Treo 680 compatibility. In his announcement on the forums, developer Arseniy Prujov also put forth an interesting theory regarding the better-late-than-never 700p ROM update. If correct, this should be welcome news for 700p owners, albeit long overdue...

The announcement reads:

"We have made some improvements in phone calls handling procedures and implemented universal scheme for Treo 680 and Treo 650 handhelds. Treo 700P phone calls handling has major differences, but we think that after long awaited 700P ROM Update, phone calls handling procedure in Audio Gateway will not differ from others. Obviously, new headset management logic implemented in the current 700P, was not proved to be correct. Seems like Treo 700P ROM update will provide the same Bluetooth headset management logic as Treo 680, and I suppose it would be fine because we consider Treo 680 implementation better than Treo 650 and 700P ones."

The 700p's reported Bluetooth instability has been one of the most oft-complained about issues on the Palm OS' only 3G phone.

Arseniy also provided some new details about what's in store for future versions of Audio Gateway, currently the only A2DP stereo headset solution for Palm OS:

  • Kinoma Player compatibility issues will soon be resolved with a software update
  • Pocket Tunes auto-resume problems will also be fixed;
  • Future versions will focus on better sound quality

One of the best applications currently available for Palm OS. Worth every cent!

Keep up the great work, and thanks for your continuous effort to sail around Palm's never ending system changes!

More from Arseniy on the softick forums:

Unfortunately we have no any (official or unofficial) information from Palm concerning Treo 700P update. At the same time, our theory about updated headset management for Treo 700P is based on the on the analysis of the headset management modules implemented in recently released Treo 700P for Alltel carrier. On this device Audio Gateway fails to detect usual 700P-style headset management, and module version numbering is very similar to Treo 680, rather than Treo 700P.
Also you may notice that persistent headset connection, introduced in Treo 700P, was deprecated in Treo 680. That's why we expect (I should better say hope) that more stable headset management that we see in Treo 680, will substitute current Treo 700P portions.

I just complained to Alltel about the unreliable bluetooth stack. They contacted Palm, and this is the response from Palm. Hopefully it just means the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. I can't imagine that Palm really does not know how bad this bluetooth implementation is.

"Hello Mr Clark, I just got off the phone with Palm support, the rep advised me that they do not have a planned fix in the near future for the 700p. The rep advised me that Palm is not aware of any BT issues with the below BT headsets.

If your Jabra headset is listed below, and you continue to have Bluetooth issues, please contact ALLTEL DTS...we may need to do an Xchange By Mail replacement for your phone (XBM)"
