Connection

If they only have a USB Device connector on it, they will seriously compromise their connectivity and third party market. I don't see any specs on the connector option yet.

sorry Reverend. i tried to warn you but you didn't want to listen. you got caught up in that deadly mix of nostalgia and false promises. but it's not too late for you. hopefully you'll learn from this experience and come out of it a better person. a much more angry, bitter, and jaded person - but better. like me.

You're right Gekko. I don't know if I'll get any better tho. Not that I don't have a long way to go, but I was jaded before this Jelly of the Month Club bonus today. When you're already a nice shade of green, you can't get any more jaded. Depressing.

The HTC Inspire 4G, which is basically an AT&T version of the HTC Desire HD, comes in at a very low price tag of $99 on contract come release day February 13th.

AT&T HTC Inspire 4G specs

For just $99, you get a 4.3-inch Android powered smartphone with a 800x480 resolution, 8-megapixel camera, 720p video capture, 8GB card plus built-in 4GB, mobile hotspot support (will require you to opt in $20 per month for the hotspot service so you can share your 3G connection with other wireless devices) and HTC social networking features.

Pre 3

"HP really took the hardware end of things and just ran with it hey?! they took the pre 2, carefully discussed their options, held several focus groups, looked at some pie charts, then re-released the same phone with an hp logo! the internals have been bumped which is nice, but I don't know, I was hoping for a different design."

Hopeful

jptx @ 2/9/2011 6:33:08 PM # Q
I am so hopeful. As a palm user back to the Palm V, I finally switched from my Centro to an Android Phone. I think Android will really rock in a year or so, but I think it is not ready for prime time yet, particularly the phone interface.

I switched to the Pre and really like it. I sorely miss the variety of apps available and that's the only reason I'd go back to Android. The form factor is great, my wife and I share a touchstone which is so handy (she has a Pixi). The sound is good, the phone functionality (top priority) is great.

I just need it to be successful. To move back from the HTC hero, I lost Google SkyMaps, turn by turn navigation, decent voice mail app and several other wonderful apps.

So I am hopeful that this thing will take off!!

I would also like to see a supported Palm OS emulator. For goodness sake, it's already written!! Frustrating.

I'd totally get my elderly parents a Touchpad if the data costs are not too bad and the pad itself is less than 5 or 6 hundred. This product has big potential if it can crack the market for grandparents.

I don't think grandparents are anyone's target market.

I agree that the "raw" phone interface for Android needs work.

I've tried Cyanogen on my Aria and I hated the dialer. And there were a number of other irks and issues. So I went with the Liberated Froyo ROM instead. Been happy as a lark since then.

HTC really does include some nice improvements with Sense on their Android phones. Had I waited 7 months, I'd be standing in line (if there is a line) on Sunday to get an Inspire.

Sense is the only UI/skin for Android that is worthwhile. Moto's Blur blows, as does Touchwiz and in particular all of those horrible UIs the no-name Asian companies put on their generic tablets (Tap'nTap etc).

That said, stock Android 2.x needs a LOT of work & polish too. The calendar blows, the contacts app still pales in comparison to Palm OS, the gallery is slow & buggy, the media player looks like something from 2002, and the stock phone app is functional but very barebones.

Honeycomb is a huge step in the right direction but it cannot come fast enough and its trickle-down effects to Android smartphones will take even longer.

I'd like to see Google do what MS did back in '95 and put the smack down or severely limit OEMs putting their own launchers/shells on top of Android. But if they do that, Google will need to take huge steps to improve the stock Android functionality and look & feel and we know they're unlikely to do anything like that.

At the very least, enforce a policy that maufacturers offer users some kind of manufacturer skin on/off toggle. Not everyone wants to fiddle with Launcher Pro and rooting/ROM flashing hackery. In my experience, there is almost always some little quirk that makes those modded ROMs unsuitable for daily use (at least on the Moto devices with locked bootloaders to prevent custom kernels).
