Comments on: Palm to Offer Refurbished Devices, IIIxe Rebate

With no fanfare, a page for selling refurbished devices has quietly appeared on Palm's Web site. However, right now the only thing the page has is the message, "We are not currently offering any refurbished Palm handhelds at this time."

PalmStation is reporting that Palm is offering a $50 rebate on IIIxe's purchased between December 3, 2000 and January 19, 2001. The source for this wasn't given, besides that note that you could get a rebate coupon from the store where you purchased the Palm. If anyone can corroborate this or give more details, it would be most appreciated.

I say few adds (Best Buy, CompUSA, Office Depot, etc) this weekend stating they have Palm IIIxe's for $199.00 after rebate.

I saw the same rebate from Earthlink saying a "special offer for Earthlink customers". It's not that special if it's available to everyone else is it. ;-)

It's true, the rebate is available also here in Canada. I saw a Palm IIIxe for $299 CDN after rebate.

I work at CompUSA. Palm is offering a $50 rebate on the IIIxe. Looks like Handspring has 'em running scared... Hehe.

Does anyone know the exact URL? I couldn't find it on their website, even with their search.

Thanks.

new models on the way?

I.M. Anonymous @ 12/5/2000 8:23:12 PM #
Doesn't Palm historically rebate or reduce prices when new models will be introduced into the supply chain soon?

You have to admit it, Handspring is doing more to advance the platform than anyone else.

refurbished?

pramod pal singh @ 12/6/2000 12:33:14 AM #
what would one mean by refurbished? whats the diff between normal iiixe and a refurbished one?

Generally these are devices that have been returned to the manufacturer under warranty because they are defective in some way. The manufacturer, Palm in this case, then repairs the device and sells it at a discount as refurbished. It is a way to reduce the losses on defective items. Generally a limited warranty is given.

Some people like this because it is a way to get what is basically a new device for a big discount. Others pass because they don't trust the manufacturer to completely fix the defect.

And some of us PREFER refurb'ed units because they generally go through a more rigorous testing procedure after they're repaired. This isn't always true (we got some refurb'ed Sony monitors a few years ago that haven't withstood the test of time), but I have some other refurb'ed electronics at home that have lasted quite a long time.

rebate + $50 discount

I.M. Anonymous @ 12/6/2000 12:45:43 AM #
amazon.com currently has a e-coupon out there for $50 off a $200 electronics purchase. that's $199 for the IIIxe. then, you can submit the rebate (download the form from palm's website). Net=$149 (what you'd pay for the M100).

I don't know if they'd let you do that. I know it is nitpicky but $199 is less than $200.

Ed,

think he's saying, you buy it for $249 from Amazon, then use the $50 off deal to get it for $199. Then you send in the rebate form and get a final price of $149. Sounds like a bargain to me!

Maven, you are completely correct. I have to stop trying to do math early in the morning.

Rebates

David W @ 12/6/2000 11:00:41 PM #
I dislike rebates. I followed all the instructions for rebates on 2 canon printers and never saw the money. :-(
