Comments on: Write on the Whole Screen with simpliWrite 1.6

Advanced Recognition Technologies Inc. has announced an update to simpliWrite, to version 1.6. simpliWrite is a handwriting recognition app that allows users to write regular letters and numbers, not Graffiti. The new version adds the ability to enter input from anywhere on the screen, not just on the Graffiti writing area.

There is a 10-day demo available. Use the Exe version, the Sit version is still 1.0.

Has anyone tried this yet? No screenshots at their site (idiots!). The Franklin eBookman will use this as its HWR too. mc

the screen writing is pretty good, and it doesn't have any of that lag that ScreenWrite Hack has. The bad thing is that once you've gotten used to grafitti, going back to plain text is difficult and actually slower - especially since now you have to dot your I's and cross your T's. The recognition of characters is pretty good, except for a few like Y and G.

This would be much better, and I might consider making the switch, if there was a way to keep some grafitti and mix it with simpliwrite - for instance an option to use simpiwrite but still use grafitti for I's and T's and some other characters. That shouldn't be too hard...

Maybe if you write in all lower case...

It's somewhat annoying that the character shapes simpliWrite recognizes are all lower case. I tend to write in all caps -- too many drafting classes -- and for me grafitti was infinitely easier to adapt to than simpliWrite's character set. They call it, "Handwriting Recognition for Palm OS," but they would do better to bill it more as a Grafitti replacement.

I would also definitely agree with Nate that, in order for this to even be close to useful it should also recognize the Grafitti character shapes in addition to its own.

All in all, if you're used to writing in lower case characters and don't know Grafitti at all then this might be useful. But it's already hit my trash can.

simpliWrite no great shakes

I downloaded the exe trial and kept on on my palm less than 5 minutes. This is just another, but diffeternt version of grafitti. I saw no advantage!!!

simpliwrite vs Jot

Which is better? Jot does the same thing. Now, if only Caligrapher was available for the Palm OS! Caligrapher (which is called Transcriber on the PocketPC), is THE best of them all. Caligrapher allows the user to write an entire sentence or paragraph on screen which then is put to text.

Tried both Jot and simpliwrite. Removed simlpiwrite. Jot has more variations for characters, some the same as graffitti. I find the the greatest accuracy for my writing style with Jot.

No international chars

One problem with SimpleWrite is that it does not support international characters. I am a Danish Palm User and I cannot write æ, ø, å with SimpleWrite :-(

i tried the demo & i just don't get it. Writing the old way is much slower than using graffiti... I don't really understand why people find graffiti so difficult their are only a few "non-traditional" letter forms, and they are not difficult to remember since they're based on strokes used in the traditional letter anyway...
