Greg - I've had similar problems with Handspring
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/22/2001 6:50:02 AM #
Greg's right. These guys may not _legally_ have to provide better grounding but they should because static is a known problem around computers. I now always touch a static mat under my keyboard because I've zapped out my USB bus several times by hitting the sync button on my handspring cradle when I'm full of static charge. It must travel across the plastic to the metal contacts and into the USB cable. Same thing happened to a co-worker and she killed the motherboard (luckily the computer was covered). I notice USB bus is particularly sensitive to static, so I touch the anti-static mat when I connect anything to it.

The rebate is only good on the case for the Palm III/VII series, not for the V series case.
Where's the rebate?
I bought the case, which is a pretty good deal at $20 - but the people at Staples didn't know anything about the rebate. How do I get my rebate?

RE: Where's the rebate?
There is a Rebate Center on the Staples site:

http://www.staplesrebates.com/clients/staples/rebates/rebates_index.jsp
Is it available through there?

You can download the rebate from http://www.staplesrebates.com/clients/staples/rebates/promotion_detail.jsp?PromotionCode=01-34325&BundleID=217109
RE: Where's the rebate?
This link generated an error for me but searching for rebate number 01-34325 worked.

RE: Where's the rebate?
Thanks fellas! I was pretty happy with the case at $20, but for free, I'm even happier. It's a pretty good general-purpose high-protection case, though I always hate the velcro. And it does smell a bit. :)

Greg- Palm was right
I'm an electrical engineer by profession, and my products have to pass ESD testing. (Electro-Static Discharge). A computer manufacturer should make sure their ports are ESD protected - the same thing could have happened if you were reaching to plug a cable into your PC's serial port and it discharged from you or a metal connector housing.
The cradle is connected through the serial port, and makes the serial port no more susceptible to ESD damage than the port itself with nothing plugged in. Palm can only make their products ESD safe. The same problem would have happened if you had a serial cable attached to your computer with the other end lying on your desk and you reached for it. The cradle is essentially a serial cable.
This is indeed the fault of your PC maker and NOT Palm.
