Comments on: Review: WorldWideWidgetWorks Palm GamePad

Palm handhelds, especially color ones, make great game players but many games require pushing the application buttons far more than they were designed to handle. It isn't unusual to read a Usenet post from a frequent Palm gamer asking if there is a way to fix a button that has been used to the point where it is loose and rattles whenever the handheld is moved. A great solution for this is the WorldWideWidgetWorks Palm GamePad.

ardiri.com received probably one of the first gamepad devices (back in late november 2000) - and we started adding support for the gamepad pretty much straight away. the API required a bit of tweaking (prc-tools) however we got the thing working.

I decided to put on my best beta tester's hat and went at it. I removed hacks, apps, and preferences one by one. I even performed a hard reset of my device. Nothing....Then about a week ago I noticed that there was an updated driver on the PalmGamePad.com website...voila!

i have been through pretty much all the driver revisions :) and occasionally i have experienced problems with the driver, sometimes it would not detect the unit, it would FATAL EXCEPTION on my for strange reasons - i am yet to try out 1.202 however i am installing right now :)

the only pet-peeve i have with worldwidewidget works is their ability to update the website showing which games are GamePad aware! ardiri.com has produced a number of games that support this hardware (and, most of em are free) - maryo bros, the latest addition plays so well with it.

i also hope they fixed the "power off" timeout bug. if you have a gamepad aware game, and you play (pressing buttons on the gamepad) - the system doesn't recognize that the system is actually being used. i submitted this bug, but it wasn't fixed in 1.201 - i hope it is in 1.202 :) essentially, when a key is pressed on the gamepad, they should inform the system that its not doing nothing :)

1.202 driver status

to follow up on my testing, the 1.202 driver solves the issue with the "power off" bug :) a particular nice touch introduced in 1.202 is the ability to actually remap the gamepad keys to what want them to be (not like previously, where it was mapped statically).. nice :)

Stiff Buttons

I put the GamePad to the test - my 10 year old son and 13 year old daughter (both GameBoy addicts) - they love the button layout, but they hate the feel of the buttons (compared to the gameboy, way too stiff). I'll give it a couple of weeks to see if it mashes properly...
