Comments on: TRGpro Price Drop

HandEra has reduced the suggested retail price of the TRGpro to $250. It is not yet known is this is in response to the price reductions that Palm made last week on many of its models or if HandEra is making this move in preparation for the release of its new model, which is rumored to happen by the end of this month.

Rumors have been circulating for months that TRG, which recently renamed itself HandEra, will be releasing a new model with a more up-to-date design and a better screen. The TRGpro hasn't had a major hardware change since its release in October of 1999.

This is too much

HandEra had better hustle. There are already rumors floating about that the new Sony color CLIE is coming to the US on May 1st. Perhaps just to Sony Style stores, but that's still competition for both Palm and HandEra too.

I agree that Handera risks getting lost in the shuffle, but I don't think we'll see the new CLIE by 1 May. Sony's reps have already said that they will "make an announcement" regarding a US version of the CLIE PEG-700C around "midyear." I would be surprised if we see the CLIE on US shelves before the fall. Sony seems convinced that the japanese market is enough, just as they were convinced that it was enough for the older color CLIE. Of course, they were also disappointed with sales of the original CLIE, and they still stick to their proprietary expansion slot, so they clearly aren't all that brilliant about such things. :-)

No way will you see a color Clie by May 1
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/17/2001 10:47:14 AM #
Seeing it this year is a leap of faith considering that the new color
Clie was originally not slated for US release at all, and that the
software was adapted for the Japanese Palm OS. I think if Sony
really moves, you may see it by Christmas.

So far it appears the increased resolution has noticeably slows down
the handheld, so while 320x320 is great, you take in a speed
penalty. This is probably also why Palm didn't introduce this into
the M505, and why Palm is going to ARM chips.

Larry Garfield, you idiot

As usual, Larry Garfield ("Groucho") proves how little he knows every time he writes something.

The HandEra "X" will be released on April 30, 2001. It will retail for $349.95 and will be available through a number of retail outlets. It is about the size of a Palm Vx and has all of the features leaked to the media in recent months (MP3 support, CF/SD slots, improved monochrome screen, etc.).

If you're planning to get a PDA, wait until you've seen the new model from TRG/HandEra.

No, they're wise to keep quiet.
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/18/2001 11:24:24 AM #
Because if their new unit is really that much better (if it has one of the "killer features" like a hi-res screen or MP3, for instance), sales of the current product will plummet as people wait to buy the new one.

If they let out news of the new unit long enough before the new product came out, they could literally go out of business in the time before the new product actually arrived. It's happened before in the computer industry, the classic example being Osborne computers and the announcement of the Osborne II.

TRG Rumors

I have spoken personally with a TRG rep recently at a handheld fair. While he wouldn't release much, he would say that the new model will not have a color screen, and that TRG has no plans to develop a color screen. He did say, however, that the upcoming released model would have a markedly improved monochrome screen, better than any on the market right now. He also said that we could expect the model sometime in the next month. This is straight from the horses's mouth folks, though I'm sorry I couldn't extract some more details from him (trust me, it wasn't from a lack of badgering).

Finally! HandEra/TRGPro II photo (AWESOME!!!!!!!)

Great scoop, guys. Can someone set up a website with as many pictures as possible? I can donate FTP space if necessary.

Don't bother, it is a scam/joke.

yawn......Sam's Club has been selling the TRG Pro for $250

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/17/2001 4:59:50 PM #
Sam's Club has been selling the TRG Pro for $250 for the past two months!

Here in Phoenix, AZ, we've been able to purchase the TRG Pro for $249.95 from Sam's Club since mid-February!

Some of you may not know this, but ANYONE can get a membership to Sam's Club.

Sure, it costs about $30 for the membership, but remember that that membership brings other advantages as well.

RE: No yawning, please
Ed @ 4/17/2001 11:21:22 PM #
Now that the suggested price is $250, Sam's Club will probably reduce the price even more. Yes, you can find almost every handheld cheaper than the suggested price but the suggested price s significant because the discounts are tied to it.

Also, this price reduction is significant because it might be a sign that a handheld price war is beginning or that HandEra will soon be releasing a new model. Or it might mean nothing of the sort.

In any case, no yawning matter.

I just got mine today at Sam's in Texarkana,TX for $187. I just could not wait and the price was right!
Lyn in TX

They're now selling it for $187.50.

As somebody else here posted. I saw the same price at a Sam's Club in PA. I was really tempted, as that's a real bargain, but I am holding off for the new HandEra device.

Why doesn't my local Sam's club have any?
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/18/2001 12:27:15 PM #
I've yet to see a TRGPro at Sam's. I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas, and none of the Sam's I've visited have carried the TRGPro. The only PDA I've seen is an ultra-low-end Casio. Anyone know of a Sam's in my area that has the TRG? I checked the Sam's website, but they still list it at $249.95. I'd like to take advantage of the $187 price, if I can. Great deal, even if I do decide to purchase the newest one later on.

Is there any way you can scan and post the receipt for the TRG Pro you bought for $187.50 at Sams? The one near me still lists them at $250.
