Comments on: Backup m500 or Clié onto an Expansion Card

Blue Nomad has released BackupBuddyVFS, which is designed to work with Palms that have external storage options that support the Virtual File System, such as the Palm m500 and m505 and the Sony Clié. It lets users backup their handheld’s contents to and restore from the SD and MMC expansion cards and Memory Sticks. It costs $5 and a free, limited function version called BackupBuddyVFS:Free is available, too. The full version will also be included with BackupBuddy.

I think it's pretty impressive that BlueNomad is already releasing a backup product for the new Palms!

Good day,

What about current registered users of Blue Nomad's BackupBuddy? will they be provided the VFS program for free, as an upgrade of will we have to purchase the VFS program separately?

I'm a registered user of BackUpBuddy and received an email from Blue Nomad with instructions on how to download this version for free.

Does this have any advantage over using Palm's Memory card in the 500/505?

Dennis, I guess I wasn't clear in the article. This is a bit of software that copies the entire contents of RAM onto an SD, MMC, or Memory Stick. It can also copy it back. You have to provide the card. It isn't meant to be a replacement for the Palm Launcher app, it is really just for doing backup/restore.

If you are asking what the advantage of this is over Palm's *Backup* card, then I'd say it's probably just that you don't have to dedicate an entire card to it. I haven't looked at it in detail, but I think that you can probably use your MMC card to hold apps, docs, etc. as well as keeping your backup info on the same card.

From what you all say, it's probably most useful to get the 16md card and use BB. I've already got BB and it's saved my butt a couple of times.

I picked up a 16mb card at Staples. Now if I only had a 505 to put it in....

Thanks for the advice.

 It's Crap
nXt @ 4/28/2001 4:13:19 AM #

It's Crap. Using Clie with memory syick, this stupid program takes 3 seconds to copy/backup a 1k file!!
A better program is called CardBackup recently posted on palmgear.com works wonders.
But, as a Clie user, we have now have 4 programs to choose from:
McFile (Clie only..good)
CardBackup (great)
JackBack (almost crap)
BackUpBuddyVFS (crap)

BackupBuddy is not crap. Try doing an incremental backup with CardBackup - you can't. The second full backup with BackupBuddy is much faster than CardBackup.
