Comments on: Reports of m500 Available at Office Depot (Updated)

Reports are continuing to trickle in from readers across the country that they have either seen or already purchased an m500 in an Office Depot. We've also had reports from Staples stores who say they will have them on sale sometime next week.

Update Some Staples stores are reporting that they will have the m500 and the m505 in stock on May 1.

In a related story, one of our readers, Fred Schwartz, called Novatel Wireless and asked them when the Novatel Wireless modem for the m500 series would be available. The Customer Service Representative replied, "We are working on the device right now and it should be on the shelves in June."

Not Near Me

Ed @ 4/21/2001 6:02:14 PM #
I just called the Office Depot near me and they do not have them in stock yet. I'd suggest calling ahead before throwing the kids in the minivan and heading off. Here's Office Depot's office locator, which will give you the phone number you need.

http://www.officedepot.com/Stores/default.asp

BTW, I did get a report from someone I trust that they bought an m500 today. So they are available somewhere.

Bought an M500 this morning at Office Depot. They did not have them on display - I had to ask if they had received them. They had received a total of 5. Now they have 4 :)

Bought it this afternoon at office depot. The clerk pulled it out of the back after I told him that I read on this site about them having it. (he first told me they would not have it till the end of the week) He also asked the manager about the 505. they printed out an avalibility of May 10th.

He told me to call them and if I wanted to do an exchange, that I could then.(I dont think that I will, but it's nice to know that I can)

We've got it in Wisconsin

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/21/2001 6:09:47 PM #
I went to the office Depot in Madison on Witney Way today. They had it there and it was SWEET! The thing is even smaller and lighter than the photos suggest!!! They had it next to a Vx to compare with, and this one is DEFINATELY smaller, lighter, and more portable. Also, I noticed that the screen really was much better then the previous monochromes. The SD cards were very light and small . . . EXCELLENT! It was, overall, the best one on display (my hoplessly out-of-date parents could even see that). Just imagining that with a color screen makes me wanna drool. I can't wait for the m505 to be there, but they had no real word on dates. Although it IS true that Office Depot rutinely gets palm products first, so I might cancel my preorder if offie depot beats palm on delivery.

**Another note: they had the SD cards for sale so you might want to buy them now if you're waiting for the m505, unless you want to wait untill EVERYBODY is getting them and risk backorders and "out of stock" signs

Palm m505 preordered comes later
Davy @ 4/21/2001 7:04:35 PM #
Why does Palm simply ship to the stores first? I understand it's good to have consumer intrest by putting them on store shelves, but shouldn't you also try to cater to people who people who cater to you months before? I dropped almost $600 for a Palm m505 and assecories, along with overnight shipping. If I'd known I could've picked it up from the store quicker than that, I wouldn't have bought it that way.

Thats exactly what they wanted, Davy. You are a the typical consumer who jumped on it.

They are relying on a lot of people to not be smart.

RE: We've got it in Wisconsin
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/23/2001 7:21:48 PM #
So I suggest that you quit complaining and be smart.

If your local store has the model you want, buy it. Bring your cell phone and call Palm to cancel your Web order before you head to the cash register, just to make sure they're not sending your unit out while you pay for a second.

Palm does not charge your credit card until your unit ships. Your $600 is safe - just check your bill.

Remember, it's Palm's loss, not yours, when you pay your markup to a retailer. I don't think conspiracy theories are necessary here - Palm isn't currently holding your money in escrow and collecting interest - they're just waiting for stock to send out. If you buy your unit at a store, I would think that would be much worse for their bottom line. But surely they have deals with places like Office Depot to supply them with units before anyone else, which it somehow pays Palm in the long run to honor.

But if you're obsessed, then go to the store and get one. It's that simple.

Just got one!

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/21/2001 7:01:24 PM #
I went to one of the four Office Depot's here in Tulsa, OK and picked one up! They all have at least three in stock. This thing is so cool. I'll go over some of the spiffy features that impressed me the most.. as well as share som einside info I found out on the m505!

First off... The cradle is more stable. When you slide your palm in, it won't come out without tipping it towards you, making it harder to bump it out. There's these little hooks inside the connections that make it so it catches on and won't let go. Also, the cradle is heavier, making it hardher to shuffle around on my desk like the last one. The connector on the bottom in much smaller as well. These may seem like small features, but it's the little things that make the difference with this one. There are also a few other spiffy features like a vibrating alarm and more extensive system options.

About the m505... the reason I got the m500 was because I wanted a plain black and white display. Until today I owned a IIIc, but the darn color display made it hard for me to see it when I'm outside. After getting my new m500, I was at the mall and I stopped off at Franklin Covey to see if they had gotten them in as well. They did not, BUT, the manager did show me a "retail VIP press release" which talked a lot about the m505. One of th emain issues was with the color display. The IIIc used a laptop-like display, relying on light from within the screen to shine through. The m505 on the other hand uses ambient light outside of the screen to show the image. This means two things: less power consumption, and it can clearly be seen outside in direct sunlight. It also means that it can retain the same thin shape as the m500. Don't worry though... there's also a back light so it can be viewed when sufficient lighting is not available to show the image. I'm already kicking myself for not waiting for the m505. But I'm just fine with what I've got. There's so much more I could write on this, but I'll save it for the review I know this site will let me write for them, right? :-)

What about the stylus rails on either side? The pictures make it look like this has been eliminated. Where does the stylus go?

What about the stylus rails on either side? Are they the same or different?

RE: Just got one!
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/22/2001 11:38:22 AM #
The rails are different sizes. The rail on the right can hold the stylus. The rail on the left is not as thick, and is only there for things like the hard case to slip on to.

flip cover
schmuckychucky @ 4/22/2001 12:10:09 PM #
One thing I noticed about the new flip cover is that it's better made than the V's. It's already creased so it doesn't stick out so much. I'm one of the few who actually likes the factory flip cover.

RE: Just got one!
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/22/2001 2:01:53 PM #
I was wondering if the Coach flip cover case with the plastic restraints on the bottom to hold the Palm V will also work for the Palm m500/05.

Glad you enjoyed your Palm m500. At least you are enjoying yours and it is refreshing to see a positive review. I have seen so many that have been so "nit picky" that it has been annoying. Personally for me I am waiting for the 505 and while I am anxiously counting the days I believe it will definately be worth the wait. I just called my staples and they don't have a clue when they will have theirs. I won't order mine through palm--seems it will just be too long now. Also Franklin Covey has yet to receive them.
My wait continues

RE: Just got one!
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/22/2001 6:37:58 PM #
Just a little nit to pick. Having seen an m505, the light is a sidelight not a backlight.

It's nowhere near as brilliant as a Prism indoors, however considering the Prism and the IIIc are unsuable outdoors and the nature fo the display, I'm sure the 505 will perform splendidly outdoors.

505 at Staples

scouter075 @ 4/21/2001 7:58:20 PM #
The Staples in Roswell, GA (NW suburb of Atlanta) took my pre-order for a 505 today (I ws the 1st one.) It will come with a free game card (worth $29). The manager is expecting it this week.

m500 carrying cases
Telengard @ 4/21/2001 10:46:37 PM #
For those of you that got your m500, I heard that the old carrying cases will not work because the spline that attaches the m500 to the case is smaller. Is that actually true? I didn't want to have to buy a new carrying case if I didn't have to..

Thanks!

I pre-ordered my 505 today at Staples. They had no idea when it would be in but the sign posted said that it was expected in early May. If you pre-order one and put a $20 deposit, they will give you a free game card. They had the 500 in stock. They got 2 of them in yesterday and haven't put one on display yet. This is in Orange County California.

RE: 505 at Staples
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/23/2001 10:22:57 AM #
I pre-ordered my m505 at Staples on Saturday (4/21) - $20 plus tax and will include the game card. I have the first one coming in. They say they expect them at the end of the week, but I saw copies of Staples paperwork about the m500 series launch which indicated May 10 for the m505 so we'll see. Either way, I am sure I'll see it before the one I pre-ordered from Palm, so the next order of business for today is to cancel the Palm pre-order. Oh yea, maybe I can even find one of those Staples coupons somewhere and save a few extra $$$ when it does finally arrive. BTW I'm in Owensboro, KY.

RE: 505 at Staples
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/24/2001 3:36:57 PM #
Staples is known to produce coupons on occasions, such as $25 of purchases over $200 etc. for previous customers and occasionally as direct mail enticements to come to the store. It's been a while since I have received one myself, so maybe with good carma, I'll receive one before my m505 hits the store. I have also heard of coupons available on the net, but I have not confirmed that yet.

Standard Flip Cover?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/21/2001 9:03:00 PM #
To all those who managed to get an m500 early...

Do the new units come with the same inadequate flip-style cover as the V series, or has Palm come up with something a little more impressive?

Oh yeah, the same exact one
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/21/2001 11:09:06 PM #
If you think about it it's just an improved Vx...

What type of backlight?
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/22/2001 4:49:19 AM #
What type of backlight is used on the M500? Rerverse(Palm V's style) or Old style(sony's, Palm III's)? I hate the backlight of Palm V, and that's the main reason I bought a sony clie insted of it.

RE: Standard Flip Cover?
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/22/2001 5:04:07 AM #
and further more, the reverse backlight stop me from buying a Visor edge.

RE: Standard Flip Cover?
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/22/2001 6:42:08 PM #
I believe that there is a stroke sequence you can use to reverse the reverse backlight. At least it applied to the Palm III and Palm V series.

Look around for an FAQ.

much appreciated

X-master and GreenLightHack fixes this problem. JBH

RE: Everybody missed the coolest new thing
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/23/2001 3:17:03 PM #
Well, not exactly, because the issue isn't just whether it's light on dark or dark on light. The issue is with the chosen technology; with the back light on, there is light coming through whichever pixels happen to be turned on (black). So, during low/twighlight conditions, you have a problem with contrast whichever way you set it, pixels that ought to be black are too light to see, and/or pixels that ought to be light are too dark to see. The technology works fine in good light and no light, but in so-so light it's a bit frustrating. (Hint, the better workaround than a hack for this is to rotate and or shade the screen until you find an angle that works best.)

All said, I haven't seen the m500, so I don't know if it suffers from this as much. All the same, I'm waiting for my front-lit m505, which will clear up the issue.

Some are already selling ON EBAY m500/m505
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/23/2001 7:46:52 PM #
I am noticing ebayers are selling on Ebay. One high bidder even placed up $600 for the m505. For me I am still waiting to see when Best Buy or Staples will pop up with it (m505) soon. I believe that it is important for me to get it now before I see the out of stock signs. I advise those that if they did ordered from Palm and they are sending them out later cancel and get them while they are available.

RE: m505 on eBay
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/23/2001 8:21:41 PM #
I just had a thought. Some stores will have the m505 on stock later this week. I could start an eBay auction now that doesn't end for 5 days. Later this week I'll buy the m505 for $450 but I'll bet by then the eBay auction will be up to $600 or so.

Wouldn't be anything like the first time I saw an auction selling something for way more than I could buy it retail.

RE: Everybody missed the coolest new thing
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/23/2001 10:46:17 PM #
I saw someone pay $690 the other day for just the m505. No pic either...

Be careful of ebay/yahoo--just a nugget of wisdom
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/25/2001 5:13:00 PM #
I just noticed that while alot of people are taking advantage of ordering the 500 series through yahoo/ebay after seeing one auction for the m505 which pretty much ended in shady fraud (basically the item never shipped and the bidder smelled a rat when the seller coudln't furnish proof of the product in hand or the fact he wanted the money wired into a romanian bank account) on yahoo-I would advise anyone who looks to go that route to BE CAREFUL and to make sure that they have the item IN HAND ready to ship before you bid. While I have seen those that have it ready to go there are some however that have taken the advantage of setting shop and saying that the item will ship after they get it etc.,etc. If they are even top at their online auction I would do my homework and if you win I would keep track of every communication that is avaiable if you go this route....Personally I considered going this ave but right now I am willing to wait it out until it is avaiable at my store but make your own call and use common sense. Don't let anxiety to get the product allow you to make a mistake that will put you out alot of money

I have a feeling that Office Depot might have M505 available sooner than Palm. I would check back with office depot in about 10 days to see if they have any in stock. If so, get it and then cancel your pre-order with palm.

Any info that any of the new owners of the Palm M500 and the ability to run programs directly from an expansion card? I have a TRGPro and run programs directly from a CF card. Works great for backing up programs in RAM and restoring when unit crashes. If the new Palm m500 can do the same thing then I will probably ugrade to that unit. Thanks for any input on this.

I use the Bible Reader as well in my TRGPro. I hope I can run this on a new Palm m505 as well. I know that OliveTree has recently come up with a new beta version of their Bible Reader that is compatible with the new Palm OS 4.0. Maybe you can try dowloading that and see if it will work. Please let me know if this will work.

RE: Running programs from the SD/MMC expansion cards?
Ed @ 4/23/2001 11:16:52 PM #
I believe applications have to be rewritten in such a way that they will be expansion-card aware so that they know to look on the card and not just in RAM for databases. If the app is an older one, it has no idea that SD/MMC cards exist and so doesn't have a way to read files off of them.

If I remember correctly, the OS allows apps and databases to be bundled, which means that if an app that is on an SD card is opened, it and all its bundled databases will be copied into RAM and can be used from there. If the databases aren't bundled with the app, they won't be copied and so the app can't use them.

I think the m500 series will ship with a few modified apps, like the renamed PalmReader, which is expansion-card aware.

Anyway, this is what I understand from reading the PalmSource slides. If anyone who knows more than me could chime in, it would be great.

Every Office Depot in the Bay Area has the Palm m500! It's amazing! I went to the Office Depot in South Bend Indiana yesterday. They had both of the 500's they recieved still in stock. The clerk looked it up on the computer and said the warehouse (corporate or regional, I don't know) had 800 505's on back order from April 12th. They had had the 500's in for 2 or 3 days and he said it takes 2 days for things to get to the store to the warehouse.

There doesn't seem to be a big rush on here. I'm the only one I know planning to buy one. The clerk at Best Buy said a lot of people were asking but they don't even have 500's yet.

Thanks for all the info people have posted! I preordered the m505 from amazon.com and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with them in terms of when they receive items?

Would their availabilty be more like that of staples or like palm? I guess if these companies are only getting a few units each, I may have to wait awhile. But it will be worth it!

From a new m500 Owner

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/23/2001 12:48:44 AM #
I found an m500 just a few hours ago and I'm so excited I can't sleep. Here's what I've noticed so far.

OS 4 is OK, I guess. I'd like to see a new version of GoBar that can do the SD slot.
Applications on SD cards are put in their own category and can't be moved from it.
There is no way to create directories on a card.
Palm Reader will read DOC files right off a card.
When opening an app on a MMC card, there is a couple of second delay while they are copied into RAM.

The alarm is alot louder than my IIIe. Vibrating alarm is cool and doesn't make much noise.
The screen is better, too. Less green.
The right stylus channel is shorter than on my III. The one on the left is too small to use for anything but the flip cover.
The flip cover will go all the way around to the back.
The serial port is exposed.
The back of the housing is plastic.
The cradle is alot heavier. This is good because I'm not carrying it around and it stays put when I take the m500 in and out.

RE: From a new m500 Owner

How could one honestly check out and gauge the battery life after 4 hours ? After getting a new toy, one usually tries out just about anything it can (or cannot) do, which will lead to much faster-than-normal battery consumption.

Hello

I have a Palm Vx with a nice stylus "iPoint 5 Stylus"

http://www.ebcases.com/Detail.bok/d8c8e03ce60ab53fc2?&category=Stylii&start=1&total=10&no=42

and a beautifull "CoPilot 5 Wallet".

from EBCases.

Now I´m waiting the New M505, and selling the Vx, do you think the Wallet/Stylus will fit on the M500/M505?

...or i have to sell it too??

Joao, I can't use my III stylus with the m500 so I guess your stylus won't work.

I've heard the m500 is a bit smaller than the V but I don't own one (a V) so I don't know if your case will work.

m500 stylus is about 4 mm shorter than the PalmV one

I am a Irish Palm V user, could you tell me if there is an option on your m... series palm for international users. i.e is there an english language option. I have read an article at www.infosync.no/en/news/n/321.asp
which leads me to believe that it there is not
------------
The m500 handheld is scheduled to be available in the United States in late April for an estimated street price (ESP) 399 US$, while international availability is expected in May. As for the m505, it's scheduled to be available in the United States in May for 449 US$ (ESP), while international availability is expected in June. Outside the United States, users can choose from six languages for both models - English, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Japanese.

Can you please confirm that there is an english language option.

Thank You

Sean Canning

RE: From a new m500 Owner
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/24/2001 2:19:36 PM #
It said right there its in English.

The "international" Palm units are all EFIGS units, meaning English French Italian German and Spanish all in one. When you start out the Palm after a Hard Reset you get the choice to choose. This is part of why the ROM is much bigger and why the full OS 4.0 will not fit on older units.

Of course, if you simply buy a US only version, theres your english version.

/me blinks and wonders how one could miss that..

I would highly suggest pre-ordering from an American company that does not charge tax & ships outside of the country.

I do not know if Amazon does that or not *shrug*. 15% @ $699 (CAD) is pretty significant! You might get some huge savings from an American company.

m50x series (both m500 & 505) are to be available at Staples/Business Depot in Canada first week of May (april 29th is expected ship date to stores for BOTH units). (i work at staples, i'm checking these updates practically every day!)

and yes, the m500 will be 629cdn and m505 will be 699cdn.

as for canadians buying from the u.s., realise that in most provinces, the provincial governments are charging pst on all goods being brought up, so there's at least a 7% there (unless you're in alberta), and on top of that, the federal government is charging everyone's favourite gst on top of everything, so depending on the province, you're still paying the typical 14%+ tax you'd pay here, so that probably might not be the best option.

The Multimedia card is thinner, cheaper but cannot be locked. I have ran both in the M500, both work; according to the specs the speed is the same. The Multimedia card is available from 8 meg to 16,32 and 64 meg. The SD card are suppose to be 16,32,64 and 128. The Sandisk SD card 64 meg will sell for around $129.00. RE: Newbie question: Diff betw SD and MMC

When you say the MMC cannot be "Locked" do you mean it cannot be write protected or physically cannot be locked into position in the SD slot in the m50X and potentially fall out?

RE: Newbie question: Diff betw SD and MMC
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/24/2001 1:26:27 PM #
It's a copy protection thing. For example, the games pack card that Palm is selling is an SD card - and it's copy protected. You can't copy the games off the card into your Palm RAM and beam them to a friend. They're locked onto the card using some sort of copy protection that allows them to be played on the device, but not copied further and beamed around. This applies to music too. The security standard has already been hacked, I think.

RE: Newbie question: Diff betw SD and MMC
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/24/2001 2:02:40 PM #
I wonder if card reader can hack this protection....

RE: Newbie question: Diff betw SD and MMC
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/25/2001 9:42:55 AM #
In terms of functionality between the 2 cards though, there is no difference, right? If it's really only a write protection issue and the speeds are currently the same, why would anyone want to spend the extra $40 for the SD card over the MMC card?

Re: Palm Inc vs Staples/Office Depot

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/23/2001 10:07:48 PM #
okay guys!!
heres the scoop! palm, inc. will not ship any 505's til the end of may early june. which really sucks for those who preordered thinking that they would be the first ones on their block to get this new wonder.

well, turns out both staples and office depot WILL be getting the 505's no later then may 1st (got this from a very good deep throat). possibly even this week...

anyway, my suggestion... if you preordered from palm; cancel your order and show them that those loyal pda users are more important then their little constituant stores. the thought behind this is that with all the canceled orders 2 things will happen: first all those backorders will be available to shipout to us faster (via stores) and second and most improtant... palm will think about their loyalist next time.

well... its yours choice. also if you buy from staples you pay the price for the palm PLUS you get a game card vs if you order from palm you pay shipping plus i bet ya'll got overnight (or fastest shipping possible). which you won't get it faster then the stores. then you'd also be out a free game card which you'd probably buy in a couple months anyway.

Excellent analysis - "Palm is not shipping from its web orders, so cancel your web order to free up more m505's for the stores." Now, if Palm is ignoring those orders until June, anyway, how does cancelling your order free up supply? Sounds like someone has a creative way to move up on the Palm delivery list... convince everyone else to cancel their order.

RE: Re: Palm Inc vs Staples/Office Depot
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/24/2001 9:01:38 AM #
To really hurt them, accept delivery of you r 505 from Palm, keep it for a few days and return it. Their direct orders have a 30 day return privlege and I think they may even pay the shipping. They would then by law not be able to sell the unit as new - although I don't know who could actually make them do this.

RE: Re: Palm Inc vs Staples/Office Depot
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/24/2001 11:10:45 AM #
I just canceled my Palm order and went with Staples. Aside from the growing likelihood that Staples will get theirs before pre-orderers, the free game card is ... well .... free.

(One slightly slimy thing about Staples: They offer free shipping on orders over $50, but you have to put down $20 for your m505 reservation, so it counts as an order of less than $50. That's BS.)

RE: Re: Palm Inc vs Staples/Office Depot

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/24/2001 1:10:08 PM #
fellow palmers!
in no way am i trying to move up on the palm order list... in fact i canceled my order from palm; right after i got the response from them saying that the unit would not be shipped out to me until late may/early june and the 500 until mid may. i then pushed forward asking them why the staples & office depot stores are already recieving their 500's when you have yet to ship. their response was that their constituants will be recieving a limited amount, and they didn't want to ship their pre-orders until they had them all counted for.

how would this free up orders? palm, inc. put in a number of pre-orders to the factory that they will need to fill; therefore if people cancel their orders they will have to call the production plant and tell them that they no longer need thus amounts. therefore causing "big wigs" to wonder what the heck is wrong with everyone canceling. thus making them see that palmers who pre-ordered want their units the day they are on the market, and if palm, inc. is not going to provide them like the important customers they are (or at least keep them informed)... they will go else where. believe me next time they will think twice.

Now, with all those pre-orderd units that may have started production... they would be sitting in a wherehouse and will probably go to the next shipper that will most likely get rid of them first (staples/office depot).

... most likely if alot of people pre-ordered through staples/office depot there will not be enough the first round (especially if they have a limited quanity), but if back orders are immediatly met with those units now unspoken for in the wherehouse... well there ya go!

so friends, fellow palmers... its your choice to wait for your order, or go ahead and pre-order through staples/office depot plus get a free game card. i'm only trying to help out.

Another thing all order-cancelers should do is e-mail Palm with an explanation. Why leave it for them to figure out by implication? I'm telling them:

(1) That I don't think it's cool to ignore the pre-orderers. They should be rewarded for loyalty. (I understand the economic justification for leaving for last the people who clearly want one. But it ain't fair!)
(2) That if Palm tells me I am going to get an update on the status of my order every two weeks by e-mail, I should get an update on the status of my order every two weeks by e-mail, rather than a solitary e-mail that says nothing.
(3) Free stuff baby! I follow the free stuff!

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/24/2001 2:59:26 PM #
Thank you for the heads up! I was considering ordering mine through Palm but considering that they are going to be crazy enough to send pre orders later I am holding off until Best Buy or Staples comes through. I tried the staples nearest to me but they are saying that they don't have them in yet. I am willing to make the long walk to get them...I can't wait the news makes me even more anxious to get it (the 505)

What I don't get is why Palm would even think of sending their preorders later--better logic would have them ship them out now to those who ordered in advance. I do agree with previous sentiments that Palm should be sent a loud message by cancelling a preorder for the palm with them. I am surprised however that they have made the accesories already available on the website.

RE: Re: Palm Inc vs Staples/Office Depot
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/24/2001 3:59:25 PM #
IT DOESN"T MATTER!!!!!!

If you by from Palm, Office Depot, Staples, or buy one off ebay, Palm still makes a profit off your purchase. Cancelling a preorder with Palm doesn't hurt them one bit. You'll actually be doing Palm a favor, since they don't have to deal with shipping individual orders to thousands of people. The only way you can hurt Palm at this point is to buy a WIN CE product since they make money if you buy Handspring or Sony too.

Just choose the price you want to pay, place an order, and wait patiently for it to come. :)

RE: Re: Palm Inc vs Staples/Office Depot
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/24/2001 4:13:34 PM #
Palm is walking a fine line by selling directly and competing with its retailers. It has to be careful not to do so in a matter that would alienate them. Otherwise they would refuse to market its products to Palms detriment. Its retailers are extremely important to its business.

Moreover, everyone places great emphasis on individual preorders, and that they should be given priority over the retailers on a "first come first served basis". But I would bet dollars to donuts that the retailers put in preorders long before any individual, making them the first comers.

RE: Re: Palm Inc vs Staples/Office Depot
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/24/2001 5:08:23 PM #
Presumably, Palm makes a little more profit if you order it from them. They then function as a wholesaler that can charge retail prices. As in any industry, the more middlemen you cut out, the fewer upticks in price occur along the distribution chain.

By some fluke of the antitrust laws, Palm is in the enviable position of having its prices essentially fixed for all sellers, including itself, so it can sell at the same price without paying the middlemen.

(Granted, Palm incurs shipping costs when selling directly that it doesn't incur when selling to retailers. But those costs, when borne by the retailer, just cause the retailer to pay Palm less per unit, so it can recoup its costs. The costs don't go away when Palm sells to retailers that themselves offer delivery/shipping.)

You ought to be careful about this. The Universe has a sense of humor. I wouldn't be surprised if you got one and tried to cancel the second, only to find that it has already on its way. Not a huge deal but this will mean you have to go to the hassle of mailing it back.

Or you could go with my idea and offer it on eBay. I'll bet you could actually make a profit on it.

I just put in my preorder for a m505 at a Staples in San Bernardino, CA. They told me that even though they plan to have the m505's in stock soon, they can't actually give it to me until May 10, because of a deal they have with palm. They are not even giving out the m500's even though they have them in stock, because the deal was April 29.

Obviously not all retailers are adhering to this "deal" with palm because a lot of people already have m500's. Does anyone know of a place around here where I can preorder that is not going to adhere to this "deal"? I went to Office Depot already and they were completely clueless about when they might get the m505 in.

Just called my staples in Columbia, SC and they have just received the m500 in stock which at this time they only have 10. They are selling for 399.99. I asked the Electronics rep re: the free card and reservations that are featured on staples.com and he wasn't very knowledgable regarding this matter or the 20 deposit for that matter. I would go for the m500 if I was antsy but I really want the color m505 so I am going to hold out. I checked the officemax in my area nearest to me and they haven't received any and are uncertain on when they will receive theirs. While I am still very excited about the 500 series I really think at this point that Palm could have done a much better job in preparing the advertising campaign and actual release of the products to us. I think that they should issue some form of apology to those that have preordered (especially those since march when they first annoucned it all). I still got love for palm but I thought corporate and advertising when have known ALOT better when they are presenting a new product to the line. Hopefully they will learn from this experience

No, No, No,

I asked three times. The $20 is refundable from Staples if you cancel your order, and you can cancel at any time.

I would have hesitated reserving an m505 without the ability to cancel if I get my unit from Palm first. However, I am 99% sure Staples will get them first.

Staples is definitely the way to go. However, I think you have to reserve by 4/28 to get the free game card.

Who'd a thunk Staples would have these first with a good deal to boot.

It looks to me like there are about 15 paragraphs.

benchmark test?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/24/2001 7:27:03 PM #
Has anyone perform benchmark test of M500? How fast is it?

RE: benchmark test?
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/25/2001 1:57:32 PM #
I've just run a benchmark test on my m500 and it comes in at 154%, barely faster than the Handspring Visor Deluxe (145%), and a full 50 percentage points slower than the Visor Platinum (204%), or it only has about 75% of the speed of the Platinum. IIRC, that's despite running the same processor as the Platinum. It is 42 percentage points faster than the Vx (112%) so it is progress. I guess the new OS is suffering from Microsoft Bloatware Syndrome (MBS).

I saw the M500 unit today in Huntington, WV Office Depot. They had a space and a plastic sleeve with the price for the M505 ($449). I spoke with a manager and she said they received the M500 on Friday and expected the M505 anyday.

Office Depot accepting m500 return toward m505?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/25/2001 12:06:09 PM #
If one purchases the m500 and wants to upgrade if the m505 actually has a desirable screen, will Office Depot accept the return?
Also, I thought that Palms products had a 30day money back gaurantee...
Just a thought

Numerous reports have come in that some Staples locations are expecting shipments of both the m500 and m505 tomorrow. Other Staples locations know nothing about this.

Also, Staples is offering a free Palm Games Card with purchase.

An Office Depot near my house has the m500 in stock. I got to play with it for a while and it is nice.

WHERE R U SEEING FREE GAME CARD AT STAPLES ???
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/25/2001 8:23:09 PM #
I went to Staples Store and pre-order my m505 AND I visited the Staples.com site and NOWHERE did I see anything about a FREE GAME CARD. They didn't tell me about this at the store nor did my pre-order form list this info nor did the brilliant sales staff inform me of this. IS THERE ANY DOCUMENTATION out there I can bring into the store to substantiate my claim for this offer??????? I LIKE FREE and I want FREE STUFF on the rare occassions that I can get it. THANKS.

RE: STAPLES TOMMORROW!!!
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/25/2001 8:50:40 PM #

I wish you hadn't told him. Just about everything this guy has posted has been as rude as possible. Please don't do him any more favors. You can tell its him because he screams all his comment titles. He's the sort of person I don't want to be on this board. You know, arrogant and insulting.

I went to a Staples in Rockville, MD and reserved my 505. I was told that they will be in soon and
and be available for purchase on 5/6. They have 6 500's (I saw them) that will be going on sale
4/29. I was also told there will be an add in the paper this weekend about this and the clerk
indicate that there may be additional freebies in addition to the game card. he didn't indicate what
these might be.

Best Buy

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/25/2001 5:55:48 PM #
When does Best Buy expect them?? I have a trade-up policy with them and I'm wondering are they lucky enough to get the 505 the same time as Staples? I know the Best Buy shipments are on Thursday and Saturday... and the guy I talked to at my Staples said the 505 will be in this weekends ad... so I am guessing tomorrow (Thurs) for Staples and Best Buy maybe???

Dear Mr. Fields,

Thank you for your email.  We apologize for the delay in response.
Unfortunately we do not have a ship date for the m505 that you have
pre-ordered.   We will fill these pre-orders in the order that they were
placed and are working to fill these orders as soon as possible.  We do not
have any information as to when the retail stores will be receiving their

The best buy in Florida Melbourne is about to get it off the truck. the M505, the moment I see it, I will buy it.

Save on the shipping and handling!!! As I see it Palm is missing out. They should be filling our orders, and then the distributors like staples and best buys.

And on top of that they are not even honest in giving the right information. SHAME, SHAME..

Palm M500/505 in the UK

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/26/2001 8:24:01 AM #
Great seeing all you North American's are getting your new Palms at last. Support I'd better wait another few months for them to get over here by rowing boat, then Palm to double the price "cos the british'll pay it".

Thanks for going on about how good it is to have and own though - really cheering me up in expensive, rainy, foot-and-mouth riddled Britain.

Lots of love
A.

Hello to all PALM fans in the UK,

I live in Portugal, but I have friend´s in the UK that will buy me my future M505.

So, please to all Palm-fans in the UK, let us know when the Palms M500/505 are available in London.

palm 500

Just came back from Best Buy in Deerfield,Il they have the palm 500 in and got to hold it. Screen seems much smaller and lighter than the palm V and the side slot to put in my palm wallet does not fit. Still looks great and can't wait for the 505 to buy. I wonder if they will have new wallets for these 500 and 505 since I really like to keep it protected and secure?
