Comments on: Latest m505 and m500 Shipping Reports (Updated)
Some readers have reported that despite being promised an m505 today, Staples stores have changed their story to having the m505 in a week or so. However, they did get the m500 in today. Many Office Depot stores also have the m500 in stock.
There is at least one online store that has the m505 in stock and shipping. eDigitalStop.com swears they have them in their warehouse and will ship within 48 hours.
Update: eDigitalStop.com has now taken orders for all thirty m505s they had. They are still taking orders on a backorder basis.
If anyone hears of a store, online or bricks-and-mortar, that gets the m505 in, please let the rest of us know. -Ed

I called the store edigitalstop and the customer service rep told me they would be shipping them out Monday. Why not today overnight if they have them? So, I would agree that the info you got was correct. They are probably on the way and will be received this weekend and thats why they are not shipping till Monday. Well, I'm sure Office Depot will have them Monday also if not this weekend. I buy lots of stuff online but because I want the option of a hassle free return, I will wait for Office Depot or Staples. It's getting close to us all finally getting our M505's

I spoke with Palm today and the representative told me that 60% of the m505 would go to retailers and 40% would go to Palm directly. She also said that Palm would begin shipping in the middle to the end of May.

I ordered from eDigitalStop.com this morning. I really hope they actually have the units in stock and aren't just yanking my chain. The Customer Service rep. wasn't able to tell me how many units they had in stock but she did say they were selling them first come/first serve. I'm a bit nervous about ordering from a small store that I've never heard of before but I'm willing to take the risk.
BTW, their site isn't the best organized. To get to the m505, I clicked on the link in the article, then in the Site Map that comes up I clicked on Palm Central near the lower right under Home-Office, then clicked on View All Results. The m505 is near the bottom of that list.
I now have three m505's on order. Here, Staples, and Palm itself. I hope one of them comes in eventually and I can cancel the other two.
Speaking of cancelling, the guy at Staples promised me I could have my $20 back if I got one somewhere else. Seems only fair considering he promised me he'd have it in today and now he says maybe next week.

just got off the phone with eDigital, and their site stinks, no help at all. seems fishy, they don't even have the m500 for sale or any specs on the m505, just a 1.5" photo of the product. spoke with a very rude sales person who couldn't say anything about when it would ship, but that they "had them". she said " i'll have someone from the company call you back"- i guess to tell me when they can expect to ship. sounds to me like a floundering e-company that wants to get commitments for sales with bogus info, then get what they can from the folks who don't cancel. beware.

I just ordered one as well. She said they will ship either this Friday or Monday and they will e-mail me the tracking number. The store is located in NY and I live in NYC, so I did not feel the need to expedite the shipping. The total came to $449.95, which I find odd because if the store is in NY and I live in NY they should have charged me tax. Obviously I didn't mention that to them. If I don't hear from them by late Monday, I'll probably cancel it and just go with Office Depot or Staples. The good thing about credit cards is that one can just cancel it and move on. If they try to charge me, I'll have recourse. If I do get it, I'll post here.
By the way, I was one of the people who had heard from a Staples manager that the m505 was supposed to be in end of this week. I went in yesterday to check out the m500, very nice by the way, and he told me that Staples delivery has been pushed back a week or two. My order on their website is now scheduled for a May 10 delivery and his store is expecting them around May 15. I think these units are going to just trickle in to a few places here and there and it will be pot luck. I could be order #6 with edigitalshop and they may only get five in. This is a real pain in the a*s, especially since I have to get my wife one too. I never should have given her my old PV. :-(

I have a theory about why eDigitalStop is the first to ship them. Other stores like Staples or OD may have them in stock at their central distribution centers but Palm is cracking down on them about not releasing before a certain day, like sometime in May. Palm may be trying to not get distributors mad at them and each other so everyone has to wait until everyone has got some in stock.
eDigitalStop may have decided it was worth pissing Palm off to be the first out of the gate. Or else they didn't read the fine print are dong this by accident. Or they hope they are so small Palm won't notice them. Or they may not ship them at all on Monday and they are making the whole thing up.

I previously purchased a digital camera from them. Same situation, they claimed they had them and would ship within the next day or two. Needless to say, they didn't ship in time and actually shipped after other stores received product (they didn't have the product in reality, I confirmed that with the manufacturer)! When I finally received the camera, it was broken! When I called to get a replacement, they claimed it wasn't their problem because I hadn't bought an extended warranty!!! Couldn't believe it. Finally, had to send it back at my own cost, and cancel the charge with my credit card and battle it out with merchant services mediation!
Don't buy from them, they are a scam!

Has everyone gotten so suspicious that we no longer take people at their word? Why should this be a scam? Companies aren't successful by $%#@ing their customers over so I think these people are a legitimate business just trying to sell items their customers want. At worst, they may be operating under incorrect information, for which we can hardly blame them. The same thing happened to Staples. Why all this negative stuff about eDigitalStop when we already know that Staples has pulled the rug from under at least 100x as many people? I'm one of the people who was promised I'd have an m505 from them by yesterday and now they are saying next week sometime. But is this forum filled with angry comments about Staples? No, it is filled with negative comments about another store who hasn't done anything to deserve them from people who have no hard facts to back them up. Yes, one person had a bad experience. These things happen. I can't name a store I haven't had a bad experience with at one time or another. The same goes for my job, many of my friends and, hell, even my wife. A single bad experience that didn't even happen to you isn't enough reason to spread stories that a company is a bunch of crooks. You have a first amendment right to say whatever you want but you have a duty to make sure that what you are saying is true.
Small companies like this increasing our choices are what the Internet is all about. If we drive all of them out of business with rumors and gossip, the only options left will be the giant megastores who can go back to charging anything they want for their products. Why have an Internet at all if it has just two bookstores and three electronics shops? I can already drive to two bookstores and three electronics shops!
As for the people who are suggesting you buy a m500 just to play with it until the m505 comes out, that's contemptible. The return policy is to help people who have actually made a mistake about buying the wrong item, not to give you a free toy. I don't care if you think Palm deserves it for the way they are putting out the m505, the only people being hurt is the store you are buying the m500 from. Don't hurt companies whose only mistake is trusting you to be honest. And don't lie to yourself, buying a product you intent to use then return is dishonest.

I just spoke with a customer service representative from edigital and as of right now they are on backorder. They did have the 30 m505 however they have been overloaded with so many orders that they are now on backorder. Thinking about just hitting staples to get the free gamecard.

I just got off the phone with a customer rep. at eDigital who said that had 30 m505s and would begin shipping Monday on a first come, first served basis. He could tell me that he had not yet reached this number of phone orders, but did not know how many online orders there were. Thus it is hard to say whether all 30 have alraedy been committed or not. He also said they had peripherals, e.g. serial cradle.

Sure we could buy one in the states, but I'm guessing you couldn't charge it due to the different voltages and power frequency? UK is 240v / 50hz!
Anyone who has one of these - is there a power converter switch actually on the power supply - and does the instruction manual mention what country differences there are?

If I were the manager of a struggling e-retail business that was closing down soon unless they had a good April, I would be very tempted to begin taking orders for all those expensive Palm m505's that people were calling about. After all, what can we lose? All one has to do is to say that we have it in stock but we only have a certain number. As long a we don't give out the individual person's number, we can just say that we ran out next week and that our "next shipment" would occur anytime. People who are desparate will want to believe that we have them and place their orders. It's something I might do if I were going to get laid off next week or if it looks like payroll couldn't be met.

I ordered one this morning and I'll call my credit card company tomorrow and see if they posted the charge. If they did and they don't ship it on Monday, I'll then cancel it. Big freakin' deal. If they do ship them on Monday, I should have it by the end of the week. If not, life goes on and i'll get refunded. Not so difficult- you make it out like I took a blood oath.

I posted above and I agree with you that it might become unpleasant, but they are a Gomez certified merchant, which I think is My Simon's rating, and all I'm trying to do is take a shot and see what happens. If they don't ship on Monday and give me the runaround when I cancel, I can just call my credit card company and put the charge in dispute and let it play out. The place may be a struggling e-tailer and may also be unscrupulous, not that I have any evidence to say so, but to be in business they DO HAVE TO SHIP SOME PRODUCT or else what are they doing? Just charging customers cards and not delivering for weeks on end? I don't think that would be possible. Give me till Monday or Tuesday and I'll post here again.

Gomez is a consulting firm, not a consumer protection agency or a respected consumer advocacy like Consumer Reports. In fact, many of the firms they give positive reviews toward (for instance, Expedia was ranked best travel site by them last year) also "just happen" to employ their consultants. There are many incidents of this.
I noticed at the local Borders another large consulting firm is trying to do the same thing. (Ranking Borders.com the best online bookseller when it was so bad they are having Amazon cobrand and do fufillment on their website soon.) Check it out.

If it were only that simple. You can't cancel an order by calling your credit card company. You must wait for the charge to show up and then submit your request in writing. It must be adjudicated by the credit card company. If it has shipped by then, then your request to cancel will be denied. You then have to recieve the unit, whenever you do, and then return it and wait for a credit.

When you buy on line, often you avoid sales tax (in Calif 7.5%) or about $35 on the m505. Shipping through someone like outpost is nominal and some are free. So its all about a wash. The big diff will be if you can get it sooner at Staples or by purchasing on line. You might be able to purchase on line and the game card for cheaper than buying at a store and getting the free game card. :-)

Huh? It isn't Staples v. on-line -- you can order on-line from Staples, which is what I did. (Free shipping, free game card. Note, though, that you do pay sales tax because Staples has a business "presence" in almost every state.)

I am curious why most of the big web sites (like Cnet) have not posted any reviews on the m500 or m505?
This is a major product launch for Palm. One would think that their press dept would supply all the important media outlets with units in anticipation of the launch.

Wow! It looks like they know how to take an order and process it! What is sorely lacking, however, is any method of showing if and when your order will ship. Funny how nothing about this document says what is in stock or any promise of shipping the unit anytime soon.

I heard from Palm tech support that you are unable to use the keyboard and palm modem at the same time. Once while on the net I saw a photo of an expected modem for the 500 series that used the sd slot and also wasnt the size of a brick like the new 500 series modem. Has anyone got any information on this?

i was @ a palm seminar in Itasca. they had the modem there. I saw it, and it was SMALL! theoreticaly, if you can use your keyboard on card apps, you must be able to use it with an SD modem (or other device). since palm has the first ability, the ability to use the modem at the same time is almost definately there

I have gone into Office Depot and Staples in the Sacramento area and they have both said they expect the M505 to be in stock early May. Office Depot gave me a more exact date of May 4th. Both stores have kiosks where you can sign up for preorder (with a $20 deposit, sometimes not refudable).
From what I've heard and seen on this site, if the shipments of the M505 are anything like the M500, all stores will receive a small quantity by the end of next week. My advice would be to wait until the product shows up in stores in your area. It shouldn't be too hard to get one when they start showing up. They lady at the Staples I went to said I was the first person to ask about the M505.

I'm in Los Angeles area and we get our shipment from Fontana (central warehouse). The status of that SKU number is active but if the warehouse doesn't have it yet then no staples (on the west coast) would have it.

Thanks for the link...but that is an (older) review with pre-production m505...the "real" ones have m505 stamped on them in the top right hand corner. You'll notice the one in your pic does not. Just wait and see the real units. Apparently they are a lot better, and one of the reasons that the m505 is being delayed is because of a couple of last minute enhancements that Palm is putting on them to increase the brightness/color.

I was at a palm seminar in Itasca thursday, and somebody with palm had one there. he let me hold it and check it out, and i was surprised by the screen. with all of these poor reviews, i thought it would suck sh**! But in reality, it was BETTER looking then my IIIc (IIIc on med. brightness, m505 in fair lighting no sidelight). the lines we all know from our IIIc's are very hard to spot, and IT WAS NOT DIM AT ALL!!! I even checked and yes, it had the "m505" label in the corner so it's from final production. Put simply: seeing the screen sealed the deal-I'm buying!

For any of you that ever do check these old archive let me give you the good news. I've just went in and check on our computer and apparently our warehouse (Staples) have just received the shipment of M505 (shown 1600 of them) and should begin shipping and arriving in the store at the end of this week. Culver City has only 2 now. Now folks please remember to ask them to check the SKU#457059 (for the M505). Some of the stores probably have received them already and some will be tomorrow (in the load). Just tell them to hold it for you. :)
My heart is beating....
I'm excited. I confess, I'm rather excited. The time has drawn near that the newest predator of the palm line will come and, by Darwin's influence, replace my old, dated Workpad.
All I know is the sooner Palm has my m505 in my hands, the better. I very much hope, like all people who did order from them, that I'm in the top 40% of people on Palm's list to recieve.

I think Palm made a big mistake releasing the 500 a week or so before the 505. I bet many people were excited to here that the 500 was in stores and grabed one to see what the new 500 series was like and will return them when the 505 comes out. I just need to place mine back in the buble bag and throw it back in the box! WHERE ARE THE 505s??????

Earlier this afternoon I droped by the Staples store where I placed my order. Just thought I'd checkup seeing I was in the neighborhood. Anyway, when I asked the manager asked for my reciept and went in back and brought up the box that had the picture of the 505 on it.
I got it! Apparently Staples is not suppose to release the 505 or make any calls for the people that reserved until May 1st. But if you go in and personally ask they will sell it to you.
Guys, VERY VERY VERY nice! Screen is bettet the IIIc. Not sure about the performance, because I just upgraded my old palm desktop and am charging it as we speak.

Yeah, I got mine, too. The screen is GREAT (according to the picture on the Palm website). It's just a bit bigger than my Vx (according to the articles we've all read). You guys are full of it. If you were the type of person to get a m505 RIGHT when it came out, you'd probably own a digital camera, too....and POST the pictures...

OK. These guys may be legit. I called EVERY Staple and Office Depot in my area (I'm in the SF/Bay Area). They are all expecting the m505 any day now (must be in transit) except for the Staples in Pinole. When I called them, the guy knew what I was talking about right away and said he had them in stock. I told him to hold one for me until I got there and he said ok. However, after double-checking to see how many he had (I asked him b/c I was going to buy more than one!), he said, "Sorry, the two I had got sold this afternoon."

I was just at Staples in Cambridge Mass today (harvard square) and specifically asked if they had the 505. They did not, only the 500 (so nice...although I couldn't activate the vibrating alarm feature, but i LOVE the new loud speaker). There is one thing that those who claimed that they just got one have in common.
They didn't mention at all, about where they got it.

The location is Staples Honolulu, HI.
The screen is better then the IIIc... it is alot softer with warmer colors. You also have the option to brighten or darken the screen. The body is all metal; so I have no clue why people were saying it was plastic. I am thinkin' that there should have been a better flap case... like maybe metal too?
Anyway, I hope this helps.

thats bogus. the m50x comes with the bare minimum charge to turn it on for about five minutes. sure, to get it FULL he may be charging it, but not to use it. i got an m500 and a Vx yesterday. the VX neede a cherge (30 mins) to turn on, but my m500 turned right on. the argument he is "still charging it" is bogus.

I spent most of my afternoon going in and out of stores in NYC. This includes CompUSA, Staples,
RCS, Office Depot, Franklin Covey and a few others I can't recall right now. Of all the stores,
only about half of them had the m500 (which is quite nice btw). They all knew about the m505
because everyone has been asking them for the last 2 weeks when they're coming. None of
them know anything beyond "we're getting them in the next two weeks".

Does anyone know what is the max MMC memory card we can put in the m50X series? I haven't seen anything on the Palm site but the Kingston Technology Memory Finder page lists a max of 64mb for the unit. Of course I would like to push that further.

lexidrugs and BibleReader are redoing their programs to work correctly with the MMC BibleReader will have a fix in a week or so and Lexidrugs (skyscape) in about 6 weeks but will have more color support in the program than now!
Right now the above two programs and most others that access databases cannot find the databases if they reside on the card!

The SD card is going to be 128 meg, the MMC will only go to 64 meg. For right now 32 or 64 should keep us happy since last week or so we were limited to 8 meg

From the prices I've seen so far the SD cards are twice as expensive as the MMC's. Any particular benefits? Also I guess I'm confused by one of FAQ answers on Palm's site.

First off I didn't know there were different types. Second does all the above mentioned MMC cards from Scandisk, Lexar etc. have this SPI mode.

For all of you buying the MMC cards, one important note. MMC cards are NOT the same as secure digital cards.
They will work with the Palm, however MMC cards are not nearly as fast.

There is to be an ad in this weekend's paper, and two will be put on display tomorrow. The rest of the units will be going to those lucky few who reserved early. The store manager, Gordon feels they will be receiving the bulk of their initial order of 100 towards the end of next week. I tried to buy one but he refused, insisting that the 505s were already spoken for.
An ethical manager - how refreshing... In any event, he basically guaranteed that I would have one by next Friday, so I'll wait until then.

I saw their lot of 20 and he opened one (today's demo!) for me to check out. It wouldn't power on, so I can't tell what the screen quality is like. I can't get over how tiny it is. (I used to use a Palm III.)

Gordon is the store manager. I have a feeling that if they didn't put them out today, they must have some kind of gag order from Palm to not release until a certain date. Please don't call the store - if he wouldn't sell one to me yesterday, he sure won't be likely to a) admit he showed them to a customer and b) sell one to you before the preorders are all taken care of.
Relax - you'll probably be able to get one in less than a week.

fyi - I just went to Staples and played with the m500. Not very imressed. It's a glorified Vx. Basically a Vx with SD Slot and Vibrating/Flashing Alarm. Screen looked the exact same as Vx. I hoped the m505 is much more impressive.

I played with an m500 today at Office Depot in Fairfax, VA. I have to say that I was very underimpressed. There were no changes to the core applications that I could see. The screen was slightly better than my Vx, but only slightly. I tried to get a look at the backlight, but I could not get the unit in a dark enough place to tell whether it was the old style or the new style backlight. I sure wanted to be more excited about this unit. No way would I go out and buy the m500, because that would only make all of the peripherals I have bought incompatible. I hope the screen on the m505 is enough to push me beyond where I am now. If not, I'll begrudgingly wait for the Sony. JBH

Address Book. I thought OS 4 was going to have this feature - that you could copy an Address Book entry (except for First/Last Name) so you could enter multiple ppeople from same company. (like Address Plus and Datebk4, etc.) Am I missing something?

I actually just walked into a CompUSA just because I was walking by anyways, and asked a guy WHO JUST TRIED TO SELL ONE TO A SENIOR CITIZEN for the m505. His answer: "What's that?". At least he was polite enough to look something up in his computer to tell me that they haven't had any orders coming in....

I pre-ordered mine from them back on April 3rd. Just got an emaial from them today stating that my m505 is now on backorder status which I found a little confusing so I called them. The customer service rep said that they expect them in by May 1st and should ship them out to the pre-orders the same day.
I'll wait and see.

$699. listed for the m505 in Canada is in Canadian Dollars which has considerably less value than US Dollars. I works about to be roughly the same as our $499. here.

Staples would hold the 505s for two more weeks so people would stop buying 500s and returning them. In fact, if palm had sense, they'd pay staples to hold the 505s off the market.

The guy that works for the Staples distribution warehouse for the Southern California region above states that as of last night, they did not have any in the warehouse so how in the world could LA (which is in the same region) possibly have any in today?

Just talked to Pasadena store. They will start selling 505's on Sunday morning. Chances of that happening I am not willing to bet on, but Ill be there at opening. I dont care if Im the first or 500th person to get it. My morning is free so why not.

Agree, 500s will not be big sellers. The only reason that people are buying them now is because they are too antsy to wait for the 505s. The 505s will fly off the shelves, that is if they ever make it to the shelves.

What do you think of getting an M500 versus PalmVx - I am concerned that the 505's will not be visible enough in sunlight outside - that is an important feature for me. Thoughts?

By all accounts, the screen on the m505 is of a type that becomes MORE readable in bright light (like direct sunlight), not less -- the concern that most people have is that it won't be as bright as the IIIc/Prism/etc in the lower light levels indoors. Personally, I expect that the m505 will be quite well bright enough indoors; just not quite the glowing artificial sun that the Prism/etc can be at full brightness -- but then, turned up, they're far too bright to use indoors without sunglasses anyway.

I called palm and they stated my 505 would ship on May 15th. I ordered mine about 4 hours after they posted, I am in the 160's for my order number. I think it is very poor business for Palm not to fulfill loyal customers orders first before shipping retail. I am sure my 2 Staples preorders will come in before the Palm direct order ever does. BTW, Staples and Office Depot have some of the worst trained employees. Two of the Staples I went to didnt even know about the preorder deal. Ohh well, what do you expect for 5 bucks an hour:)

CompUSA online says that the M505 will be shipped on Monday, May 21st. Amazon.com says it expects to ship middle of May.

Thought I would let you know that Amazon.com says on it's website that they will begin shipping the 505's in the middle of May. Also, CompUSA.com says that it will begin shipping the 505's on May 21st. Hope this helps.

E-cost.com is listing the 505 at $449.00, but when you put it in the shopping cart, it instantly gives you a discount and it ends up being $399.00. Only drawbacks...they charge a $11.95 handling fee and $7.80 for shipping because it is a penny under the $400 free shipping cutoff. But, if you order something else with it, you get free shipping. They still charge the handling fee, though.
BEFORE YOU ORDER, call them and get their return/exchange policy...I tried to figure it out but had no luck. I placed my order with them, but there are some online merchants that may match this $399 price for the 505, so check around.

Wanted to let you all know:
First, ecost.com really doesn't have much of a return policy...if you are sure that you want it, they offer the best price. If it is defective, they will exchange it.
Second, their first ship date is May 16th and their second ship date is May 21st. They said that if you oder now, you will probably be on the second ship date.
My advice is to call them first and talk to a person and make sure that you want to actually place the order first.

After reading here about the MMC deal at Buy.com, I called Palm today (4/27) and cancelled my order for their 16m card. I asked them when they planned to ship the m505 and they said "mid-May".
