Comments on: Some Good News for Bluetooth Fans
There were a couple of recent Bluetooth-related announcements that should warm the hearts of people anticipating that wireless networking standard's eventual acceptance.
Axis Communications and Palm, Inc. are going to work together to make sure that Palm handheld users can connect to a Bluetooth network powered by the AXIS 9010 Bluetooth Access Point, which is also in development.

Did you happen to notice the price on the prototype? $995. Is it just me or is this a bit much? I thought that bluetooth was supposed to be cheaper than 802.11. For price of just this bluetooth access point you could get an 802.11 access point, wireless sled and 11mbs/300ft range.

Prototypes are always more expensive because they're custom built and not in production yet. I wouldn't expect the unit to retail for that!

>> yeah, but even for a prototype, doesn't that seem a bit pricy?
No, couple of years ago, IEEE802.11b access point cost several thousand dollars!!
This is REAL great
So they are supporting one brand of bluetooth....instead of a standard. And this is good?
OH my god...becky, look at her....Prism.

I don't think there's such a thing as "brands" of Bluetooth. But the manufacturers are having problems implementing Bluetooth 1.0 and making their equipment interoperable. They tried to fix this with Bluetooth 1.1 but only time will tell.
I think this announcement means that Palm's stuff will certainly work with Axis' equipment, not that that it will *only* work with Axis'.
