We have to have patients? I have a Clie and I'm not a doctor.

I think he means that you have to be a doctor with lots of patients in order to afford a service such as this.

They give wireless capability to MONOCHROME users first?? That's messed up. I paid for the most expensive Palm on the market (710c) and I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks Sony should have gave US this feature FIRST. Will they never learn?

Er..
dwarchbold @ 9/5/2001 12:06:15 PM #
Maybe the older model has a larger user base?

Geez, it's not like they're going to forget about us 710 users!

RE: Er..
dwarchbold @ 9/5/2001 12:07:58 PM #
Sorry, "older models" should read "monochrome models". Got mix up there :)

I'm sure this modem was in development before the 710 was, thus it is only available for the old-style Clie connector. I may be wrong, but this is my best guess.

$40/Month is WAY TOO MUCH! Should be $19.95/Unlimited.

Yep expensive, but it is the current "market" price. Similar prices for the Palm.Net (unlimited), OmniSky, and YadaYada offerings.

Look at the price of internet access - as its usage became more common, and the infrastructure became deployed further afield the prices tumbled. Ditto wireless ... we are still in the "early adopter" stages, and the wireless service providers are having us "share" the costs. It will remain to be seen if the costs drop as the rate of adoption increases.

Let's see how much will the service be for the i705 and the Treos. They might targeting the same figure.

Actually, for $40 you get access for handheld AND PC, so it's a pretty good deal for people on the go. Ricochet was $75 a month. Of course, CDPD is only 19.2k I think, so that's a lot slower than Ricochet. If only it were 56k, I'd pay $40 for access that was the same as a dial-up, but could be taken anywhere. My main concern with this is that it's in addition to all the access fees I already pay for cell, ISP, etc. If it were all in one (at least home and PDA ISP) then I'd feel better about it.

Yeah...and we all know where Ricochet is - 6 feet under.

If you spend the dough on one of these, we all know you either have the dough to spend, or no life at all. And if you have no life at all, burning an extra $40 dollars a month for wireless is a small bitch for a great time waster.

STUPID DESIGN

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/5/2001 2:54:53 PM #
With elegant solutions such as Omnisky/Palm and the Palm VII, Sony makes you look like a geek walking around with that contraption.

The new Novatel modem for the Palm 500/505 will be the state of the art for these integrated solutions. The Sony solution is a loser.

Hopefully nobody will get close enough to see how ugly it is because they stand a good chance of getting their eye poked out by that HUGE antenna ;)

I already feel the new design of the Clie is too much like a fashion statement to carry around, but there is no damn way I would ever go out in public with this Hawaii 5.0 walkie talkie gizmo ;)

Although the "computer guy" on Saturday Night Live may adapt well to this contraption.

hey! what's wrong with Hawaii 5-O? ; )

as for the fashion statement, I don't think that's such a bad thing. Lots of peeps have complained about how ugly Palms can be, case in point, the old III line. Sony has to do something to differentiate itself. People have been raving about the 320 I just bought talking about how much they like the sleek design and cost to boot. Either way, end users can't lose if there is more competition for Palm.

Hmm.

Looks good. I agree with the other guy who had the gripe about the monochrome screen. COME ON! COLOR IS THE WAY TO GO!

thanks Ed

Thanks for staying on top of this, Ed. I've been waiting for this to come out.

Remember the Movie 16 Candles.....

...with those two geeks (one was jon cusack) that had all that stupid electronic gear, and anthony michael hall was constantly yelling at them "take those ridiculous things off". well they would like the wireless clie.

cost for adapter/modem

village-ham @ 9/6/2001 12:23:57 PM #
If you dig into the mylo site, you find that the hardware to go with the S320 costs $299, plus $25 activation, plus $40/month.

IMHO
OH MY GOD
FREAKY FREAKY

look I'm smart I can play with numbers,
money doesn't matter, if it's affordable to you buy it, if it's not don't, we don't care.

Heck cheapy, buy a visor solo from handspring and get a free visor phone with service activation. that's a much better price, and in addition to your internet/email, you have a phricken phone

see people, it's all about the features, and the quality there in, value is secondary, and the numbers are only in your head.
