seems a little big

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/4/2001 11:40:48 AM #
I have not seen the case in person but its dimensions seems a little big. A naked m505's dimensions are 4.5x3.1x0.5. Thus this case adds 0.5x0.9x0.2 to the dimenisions of the m505. Thats half an inch to one dimension and almost a full inch to the another.

For comparison, a naked Palm V/Vx is 4.5x3.1x0.4. And the Rhinoskin molded hardcase is 4.7x3.3x0.4. Thus adding 0.2 inches to all dimensions.

This new hardcase seems to have dimensions similar to the Halliburton case which is offered by Franklin Covey for the V/Vx and is gigantic in its proportions (I have seen this one in person).

With this series the slimmer the profile of the case the better.

BTW, does anyone know what metal this case is made of?

Well, when you consider that the Palm locks in via the rail, then take into account the hinge on the left and the material thickness, it's not really all that big.

As for the metal, I believe it is brushed aluminum.

It's not as thick as the Zero-Haliburton but the other dimensions are the same (huge). No way this beast would fit in my shirt pocket. Given the rumor that Palm isn't even going to make a metal case, I guess we'll have to pin our hopes on Rhinoskin...

if this case is built anything like Haliburton case for the Palm V series, then i'd be wary of the workmanship. see this review for details: http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/zero-halliburton-review.html.

It looks more like painted plastic. The telltale signs would be the moulded button recesses on the inside plus the fact that it's black...unless it's a two piece shell for each side (which wouldn't make sense), no one would bother masking/anodizing two different colours on the same sheet of aluminum (money not well spent).

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/5/2001 12:39:46 AM #
I posted the original reply about it being plastic. I've gone on their site and now see that it's a metal case. So, the posting by someone else above is probably correct in saying that it's aluminum...but the internal case should still be plastic. Sorry for jumping the gun and saying that it looked like painted plastic.

how about the Fellowes bumper case?

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/4/2001 11:54:49 AM #
What is annoying with such a hardcase is the fact that it folds open at the left side, which means that you cannot easily hold the Palm in your hand any more. I would love a hardcase with a flip cover similar to the one used in some Palm III systems.

Fellowes has one like that but there don't seem to be any reviews about it on the net. Would an owner of that bumper case please comment on it?

TIA

Laurens

Did you take a look at the Rhinoskin Slider case, whose cover also slides around to the back?

I just ordered the M500/505 Fellowes Bumper case as I have the III version and I love it. It is large, but I always carry it in a bag anyway.

I have posted a message in comp.sys.palmtops.pilot asking for opinions on the M500/505 Bumper and have not recieved any answers yet. I am hoping someone has one and can offer up any thoughts on the slimmer version.

At any rate, when I recieve mine, I will be happy to share my thoughts on it.

I read the article about the sliding case but I also read the comments on it. That is why I am looking for an alternative.

Zipper case

slot_machine @ 9/4/2001 12:14:57 PM #

I have used the Franklin Covey zipper case for a couple of weeks now. It bends all the way back, offers great protection,is $10 cheaper, and slips very comfortable into your front pants pcoket.

Right

That'll be great for the 3 or 4 people who haven't already returned their M505's

kaosfury @ 9/4/2001 1:28:30 PM #
Or M500's? I actually prefer the 505 _because_ of the lighter screen because I am light sensitive. Besides, you are just being cynical. ;)

RE: Flamebait
Ed @ 9/4/2001 1:38:19 PM #
What we have here is an excellent example of flamebait, a comment posted for no purpose other than in hopes of starting yet another flame war. Flamebaits are almost always just a single sentence long, expressing a very controversial opinion with no attempt to back it up with facts. They are also always on some topic that has been endlessly debated, like Windows vs. Macintosh, Ford vs. Chevy, etc.

The best thing to do is just ignore it. Replying will just encourage him. If you want to debate the m505 vs. Sony N series, there is a long argument under the article about the m525.

Not be rude, but thanks Ed, I never would have figured that out. I'm just so new to the internet scene. :P

Ed I didn't say anything about the Clie being better than the M505...that was your assumption. I don't think anyone will disagree that the M505 is the most widely returned Palm in Palm history. Go to any Best Buy, Office Depot, CompUsa, or Frys and they will confirm it.

RE: Right
I.M. Anonymous @ 9/4/2001 5:14:36 PM #
funny...if all these people are returning their m505's, why are there all these products for the m500 series coming out? hmmmmmmm.....

He he. I think the last poster hit it on the nose. Apparently, people are going on diets more often, but why is more food being produced?

RE: Right
I.M. Anonymous @ 9/4/2001 8:16:51 PM #
There aint no debate about it; Palm rules and will likely always be at or near the top.

I am personally getting tired of hearing about this 'Clie' and that 'Clie' They keep coming out with
new models as if trying to "get it right" or something.
Besides 'Clie' sounds like some *** wannabe Pda.

Keep your Sony slanteyes or send them back to Japon.

RE: Right
I.M. Anonymous @ 9/4/2001 11:53:29 PM #
Wow! SONY Slanteye?! Are you racist by nature? Did your parents brought you up that way or did you developed it on your own?

wow! what a deal

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/4/2001 3:05:17 PM #
so, let me see...I can buy an m500 for $400, then spend another $50 on a clunky hardcase, bringing the total to $450, OR I can buy a Clie PEG S-320 with integrated flip cover and jog wheel, everything else comparable, for $200. Hmmm...

RE: wow! what a deal
rldunn @ 9/4/2001 4:03:43 PM #
There's no way you can compare the Sony flip cover to a hard case. I have an S320 and love it, and the price comparisons are a good point (if the price you quoted for the M500 is a bit outdated), but let's not get crazy here with irrelevant comparisons.

RE: wow! what a deal
I.M. Anonymous @ 9/4/2001 5:19:43 PM #
oh yeah, the comparison between the two items is totally useless. and let's not even get into proprietary vs. non-proprietary external storage (memory stick vs. SD/MMC).

RE: wow! what a deal
Davy @ 9/4/2001 6:50:08 PM #
I can buy a Casio Handheld, and stick in a plastic bag for twenty bucks. Comparing prices on products is a stupid waste of time.

Just Placed an Order!!!

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/4/2001 3:36:53 PM #
I've been waiting on this since I got the m505 in May. It's a shame that Palm is always the last out with this stuff. I'm still waiting on their USB Travel Sync, and Travel Charger. In the beginning I placed my m505 order with Palm that night 1 minute after it posted. Then I ended up canceling the order because I could just go to Office Depot and pick one up.

Palm your just to SSLLOOWW... for your users!

4 week backorder

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/4/2001 7:11:36 PM #
Just got off the phone with FC & they're on a 4 week backorder for the case.

RE: 4 week backorder

may be on back order from the catalog, but they had 4 or 5 in stock at Castleton Sq in Indianapolis. Probably in other stores too.

Franklin Covey leather m500 hard case

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/30/2001 11:27:24 AM #
Franklin Covey now has a leather wrapped version of this hard case ($40.00) much like their Vx case. Looks great, good price...anybody else tried it?
