As Sony is such a huge company it is very difficult pull out handheld-related figures. Their information and communications division, which encompasses both PDAs and mobile phones, had revenues of about $2.5 billion but PDAs are only a small part of that. The division's revenues increased a small 1.6% in the past year but sales of Sony's handhelds have increased far more than that since the release this year of four well-received handheld models.

Yes, but with the Xbox and Gamecube coming out, the Playstation2's sales is going to drop like a rock. RE: PS2
Just like PalmOS devices' sales dropped like a rock when WindowsCE devices came out. Oh wait, they still control over 80% of the market. I think people who champion Microsoft are getting a little over confident lately. RE: PS2I.M. Anonymous @ 10/25/2001 10:18:27 PM #
This is totally off-topic, but, it's not X-Box Sony's worried about. Nobody expects Microsoft to sell even all of the measly 300,000 they're distributing at launch. It's Nintendo's Gamecube. Sony has had slower sales of the PS2 then they expected, people are waiting for the Gamecube, with the SD, mini-DVD, small size, and higher power. But, Sony's sales were fine. RE: PS2I.M. > XBOX will destroy all! You mean XBox will destroy Microsoft, right? :) Here's something from the Register: > Sony has shipped 19.57 million Playstation 2 and 88.26 > In the three months ended 30 September, Sony's Q2, the > PS2s are also going great. Sony shipped 980,000 of them RE: PS2
personally i'm just waiting for the ps2 price to drop. Superior technology doesn't always mean that they will win... examples PPC vs. x86, N64 vs PlayStation 1, in the end it's software that is the winning factor, which one has the **** that the general public want. a lot of the people that are buying consoles dont have a clue what the difference between an sd card and a smart media card is.. sony has the market share already with the PS1. The made the PS2 backwards compatible with older games something nintendo has NEVER done, and sega only did once with the master system to genesis, but that required an extra adapter anyways.. Personally i think it's gona be the ps2, but of course thats mho. RE: PS2I.M. Anonymous @ 10/26/2001 9:55:59 AM #
A friend has a PS2 and I was shocked when I found out it DOESN'T use memory sticks. Why didn't Sony put a memory stick slot on it? Its external memory slot fits some card just for the PS2. My only guess is an 8 Meg card for the PS2 costs $30 way more than a 8 Meg memory stick would be. Is this Sony's way of getting more money? RE: PS2
I saw a demo of the XBox at the Windows XP launch. It was pretty impressive. IMHO, it is better than the PS2. I haven't seen what the Gamecube does so I don't have an opinion on that.
