Comments on: Review: InnoPocket Palm m500 Products

Experienced users know that buying the handheld is just the beginning. It is almost impossible to avoid getting some peripherals and accessories to go with it. InnoPocket has recently introduced two new ones for the m500 series, a USB HotSync/Charge Cable and an Aluminum Hard Case. Long-time reviewer Robert Zach brings us this review of both.

US Distributor for InnoPocket m500 Hardshell Case
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/30/2001 7:16:51 AM #
Don't want to wait for shipment from Hong Kong? Now you can order from the US distributor www.galenworldwide.com

Go to www.galenworldwide.com and check out their m505 molded solid aluminum hardshell case. It's the best on the market and comes in two colors (black and titanium).

Plus, if you mention you're a PIC member, they'll give you a 10% rebate on your order. They also carry other great gear for the Palm as well.

Does it squeak?!

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/7/2001 5:13:01 PM #
I've seen some of these metal cases. The hinges sometimes squeak horribly. What about this one?

And how much weight does it add?

I received mine today, and it squeked after five minutes. I wonder if using teflon (for bycicles) is a good way to keep it silent?

It does not squeak and it is very light!

Love Mine in Titanium

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/7/2001 10:29:30 PM #
I recieved my Innopocket case yesterday and I love it. The best hard case I've seen for the 505. Mine is the Titanium color model, which is an exact color match to the 505. Looks great. Oh, and no squeeking.

Highly recommended.

Grammar police

"I usually just lie the palm down"

We all know that you can't lie an object, the verb is almost always intransative. Lay is the correct choice in this instance.

Hey.
We all know "intransative" is not the correct spelling but "intransitive" is!! :)

best aluminum case out there

crimewave @ 11/8/2001 1:13:07 AM #
I've tried the Rhinoskin, Franklin Covey and Innopocket aluminum cases, and this one, in my opinion is the best. Weighing practically nothing, and only adding fractions of inches to all sides, its exactly what I've been looking for. No sqeaking from mine, but it is brand new. And it can even beam when the case is closed! My only concern is the same as the reviewer of the pin not being tight enough to hold my palm in, but other than that, its great.

I don't think you can say this one is the best untill you have tried the top opening style Kensington case.

I'm not saying you are wrong, because I have not tried this innopocket. But I have had several book style opening cases and I won't go back to that after having this Kensington.

Congratulations InnoPocket!

I have both products and agreed completed with ED:

"In short, these are two excellent products that I highly recommend. And the price, once again from InnoPocket, is just terrific!"

Sorry, you'll have to agree with Robert Zach, who wrote this review. I've never seen one of these cases.

I hope the USB travel cable works better than the serial version by InnoPocket. Mine will perform the Hotsync fine but it won't make the serial connection to my mobile phone the way the serial cradle does. That was my reason for buying the travel cable in the first place. (The travel cable for my Vx works great with the phone.) InnoPockets response was that it was only designed for hotsyncing. Why cripple the cable and limit functionality. It doesn't make sense.

RE: Congratulations InnoPocket!
Altema @ 11/8/2001 4:06:05 PM #
Yours may be defective, as they are supposed to be wired the same as the serial cradle. I use my InnoPocket serial cable to connect to my phone and network switches. For the phone, I use a null modem adaptor for the cable AND the cradle. However the wiring was defective in my cable, and I fixed the bad connection myself rather than send it back. If you want to check the wiring, peel back the sticker and undo the two screws. This will void the cable warranty, but it will reveal any problems... unless they changed the design and removed some wires.

Concerning the "hold it in place so it does not fall off" connector: They could have designed a lock tab for the connector. A simple sliding tab to close the gap between the front edge of the Palm and the front of the connector would have done the job nicely. An alternate design would be to have two clips that attach to the back of the Palm. It would make the connector housing bigger, but would be secure enough to have your Palm bungee jump!

Innopocket Hard Case

PalmPowered @ 11/8/2001 8:09:36 AM #
I have been using the Innopocket m500 series hardcase on my m505 for about a month now. I must admit, I was desperate for a hardcase after having waited for the past six months on Palm to develop one similar to the old V series hardcase that I used to have. It is a nice case but the two things I have noticed, which have already been mentioned in some other postings, is:

A. The stylus-type rod that holds it in place does sometimes slip out of place when you are trying to slide the palm off the rail. You have to make sure that as you are trying to push the palm down the rail that you are holding on to it so it doesn't fall.

B. The hinge squeaks worse than the Walton's screen door. I don't really want to oil it as I would risk getting oil in my Palm but I do wish they could engineer the squeak out of it.

My only regret now is that I didn't get the IBM c505 instead of the m505-that cool black hardcase would look awesome wrapped around the black formfactor of the c505 series.

Power Up!

"I was desperate for a hardcase after having waited for the past six months on Palm to develop one similar to the old V series hardcase that I used to have."

I don't know if this was your intention but this sounds a lot like alot of complaints I've heard from others: "Why doesn't Palm hurry up and release a hardcase?!" I'd like to ask a very different question: "Why should Palm release a case at all?" Palm makes handhelds. Rhinoskin, Innopocket, and others make cases, and damn good ones at that. The strength of the Palm Economy is that everything good doesn't have to come from Palm itself. When you want tires for your car, do you complain because GM doesn't make them? No, you buy them from a tire company. The same applies to your Palm.

RE: Hinge squeaking
Follower @ 11/8/2001 2:56:00 PM #
You could spray the hinge with WD-40, preferably out of the tiny red straw attachment on the can, then leave the case to set without the Palm in it for an hour or so. It would basically become a solid so that very little got on the Palm, and would take care of the squeaking.

The color
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/8/2001 4:36:16 PM #
Matching the color of the case to the color of the Palm is what makes the Titanium colored InnoPocket case so cool. Maybe someone on the board (or eBay) will buy your black case from you and you could get the Titanium Inno case.

Squeaky Hinge
Guppy @ 11/9/2001 12:44:08 PM #
Instead of WD-40, which can weaken some plastics, I'd recommend a silicone-based lubricant. You can probably find it at most hardware stores.

Other cases

Coyote67 @ 11/8/2001 11:04:24 AM #
For my visor deluxe, I use a body glove soft case. I wonder why no one mentions it. Its actually a great case, I've dropped my visor many times, once down a flight of stairs and watched it fall in horror, later when I opened it up....its fine. Realisticly, how much better protection do we need? You guys plan on taking your pda and tossing it out of a plane? Anyone here a ranger or paratrooper? :)

---------------------------------------
When you find yourself in the company of a halfling and an ill-tempered Dragon, remember, you do not have to outrun the Dragon...you just have to outrun the halfling.

Two questions on this case...

ETF @ 11/8/2001 3:36:23 PM #
1. Can you hotsync in the cradle while the Palm stays in it's case?

2. How far round does the opening fold? i.e. can it fold all the way round to the back similar to the leather "flap" that comes with the Palm?

Answers:
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/8/2001 4:34:41 PM #
1. Yes, but you won't be able to seen the Palm's screen during the hotsync. No biggie for me.

2. it opens a bit more than 190 degrees.
