Comments on: Rumor: Palm Layoffs Coming

Citing anonymous sources, Cnet is reporting a rumor that Palm intends another round of lay-offs in the next few weeks. When this will happen and how many people will be affected will depend on sales during the second half of November. This might total as many as 400 employees.

Earlier this year, Palm cut about 500 employees and contractors, reducing the company to approximately 1,300.

this rumor is very true, the cuts are going to be announced next week.

This will help the stock value in the short term. Then someone will notice that you need employees to roll out new products. Hmmm... has Palm done a deal with someone else to do their work for them? The mind will wonder.

Wonder if they are going to pull a Gateway

So, if these layoffs are going to come again, you can kiss anything new coming from Palm good bye..
Just from talking with everyone at Palm they don't have the people to get anything done anymore. Looks like they fired all the worker bees and none of the manangers.. Someone told me more than 50% of the projects have been either canceled or so severely limited in staff that nothing is going forward.

Someone said, they may pull another "Gateway" and pull outof all international markets. That saves some cash in the short term but, you can forget about ever going back into those markets in the future.... Just a thought...

cesspool of nepotism

Palm has 18 Vice Presidents who evidently can't get anything done. Most of these people are FAILED Apple employees who were fired at Apple. Of course, you also have a few losers from 3Com who are also helping steer the ship into oblivion. Palm has become a cesspool of nepotism for incompetent yet arrogant Apple-rejects. It's such a shame that these guys are in charge and are killing Palm. First and foremost, I blame Benhamou. As long as this guy is Chairman of the Board, Palm is destined for failure. He should stick to trying to repair 3COM - a company he also ruined. This guy makes bad decisions and he picks bad executives. Shareholders pay the price for his incompetence.

By the way, I forgot to mention that this book mentions a lot of current Palm executives (who once worked at Apple). Nagel is described as (paraphrased) "A College Professor who never made any hard decisions nor got anything done nor acted upon any decisions and who is looking to just eventually go back to teaching." And Satjiv Chahil is described as "Star-struck" and more interested in making friends in Hollywood than actually getting anything real done to help market products.

Actually, another company actually makes organizers for Palm; Palm just does the design work. This was cited as one of their strategic weaknesses in their annual report (since they have little control over production schedules, build quality, etc.).

FIRE EVERYBODY BUT ONE GUY!

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/21/2001 11:49:48 AM #
That one guy can license the OS and OUTSOURCE everything else with revenues. This will cut costs and improve efficiency. OUTSOURCE the marketing, legal, programming, production, distrubution, and everything else. Too much FAT at Palm now is killing them.

Ladies and gentlemen, we're not here to indulge in fantasy but in political and economic reality. Today, management has no stake in the company! All together, all these VP's own less than 3 percent of the company. And where did Mr. Yankowski put his million dollar salary/nonus? Not in PALM stock - he owned less than 1 percent! YOU own the company. That's right, you the stockholders, and you are all being royally screwed over by these, these BUREAUCRATS with their, their steak luncheons, their hunting and fishing trips, their, their corporate jets and golden parachutes! PALM has 33 different vice presidents, EACH earning over 500 thousand dollars a year. Now, I have spent the last two months analyzing what all these guys do and I still can't figure it out! One thing I do know is that this company lost over 200 million dollars last quarter and I'll bet that half of that was spent in all the paperwork going back and forth between all these vice presidents!!! The new law of evolution in corporate America seems to be Survival of the Unfittest. Well, in my book, you either do it right or you get eliminated.

Just wondering......

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/21/2001 9:11:59 PM #
Could the layoff be because of a possible merger with Handspring?

It would make sense to release all duplicate positions in both companies prior to the announcement especially given the huge number of possible redundancies we hear (~400).

The clincher might come if Handspring announces some layoffs too.

RE: Just wondering......
Coyote67 @ 11/22/2001 3:15:54 AM #
Does make sense doesn't it? But I find the most obvious answer is often the answer. Palm is probably just having hard times, sadly.

Palm would benefit from two things:
1) Jeff Hawkings as their CEO
2) The HandSpring Treo which can be their platform for a wireless communicator. Palm is behind in launching their wireless products and I think they can gain by taking what HandSpring has already created and building upon it.

If only the m505 had a brighter backlight!!!

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/22/2001 3:21:12 PM #
I am sure Palm would not need to have layoffs if their m505 had a brighter backlight like the Sony Clie N760c and the Compaq iPaq. I so much want to recommend the m505 to my friends, but the poor backlight really bothers me. Why is it taking Palm so long to fix this flaw/limitation?!?!

If the upcoming Sony T600c, which is a tiny bit smaller than the m505 and is supposed to have a brighter color screen than the Sony N760, comes to the U.S. before Palm's upcoming m525, I'll be switching to Sony.

RE: If only the m505 had a brighter backlight!!!
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/22/2001 5:56:44 PM #
The new T series have serious problems about backlight. It is worse than the S series. I cannot find the link right now, but I remember it is from a Chinese site. They already have full pictures/reviews of the unit.

RE: If only the m505 had a brighter backlight!!!
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/22/2001 9:11:46 PM #
He is talking abt the color unit. The T-600C is not even out yet. I do not think anyone can get hold of the T600C. Considering how bright the N760C is, it will be stupid for Sony to release something worse than that.

I have to agree. If the M505 had a frontlight that made people smile instead of look confused, they would have been flying off the shelves. Not that they are collecting dust, as I have come across stores that have been sold-out,.. but across-the-board sales would have been better. Actually, sales would have been better if there was improved quality control. There is a gross variation in screen brightness, with most of the initial devices being too dim, some being acceptable, and a few being nicely bright. My wife has one of the bright ones, and my current one is almost as bright, but has a slight purple hue to the frontlight when viewed in darkness. As fate would have it, my wife's M505 met it's death on thanksgiving due to a rollover accident. She had it in bed, and rolled over it!

I dread sending it in because Palm will probably put a complete screen in the thing, rather than replacing the glass top, and our example of "See, they're not all dim, look at this one" will be but a memory.

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/23/2001 11:40:14 AM #
From the photo , T600's screen is even brighter than 710, so M50x now is only a joke.

RE: If only the m505 had a brighter backlight!!!
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/24/2001 7:15:00 AM #
What I dont understand is how you people, who havent even seen it yet up close and in comparison with a N600 or N700 series, say that it is brighter. Unless the T600 has a larger battery in that little shell, I would say that it would be same screen as the N610 and N700 series. It is STILL impressive.

RE: If only the m505 had a brighter backlight!!!
Altema @ 11/24/2001 7:38:08 PM #
> From the photo , T600's screen is even brighter than 710, so M50x now is only a joke.

If brightness is your only criteria, then go with the IIIc or an iPaq. The iPaq has the "super bright" mode, and the IIIc gets so bright that you can't stand to look directly at the screen. Both outshine anything made by Sony as far as screen brightness. However, if you had all three on a shelf, I'd grab the Sony because I like the device (and you can't expand the IIIc). In the real world, brightness is only useful to a certain extent... beyond that point, it's only glare.

Confusion?

m515

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/23/2001 9:07:44 AM #
OK, here's what I think Palm should do immediately as a stop-gap before OS5/ARM. Create and sell an "m515". The m515 would be exactly like the m505 BUT it would have the following:

1. New Clie Color Screen
2. 16MB RAM
3. OS 4.1

This should buy them a little more time before OS5/ARM. It shoud be pretty easy, Sony already has the screen (they just need to squeeze it into the m5xx form factor), 16MB is already being done - just drop it in! And OS 4.1 already exists. Should be a no-brainer! What do you think?

RE: m515
Altema @ 11/23/2001 10:22:55 AM #
I think that would be a good device, but it would be almost identical to the already-in-the-works M525. The only difference would be the screen res if Palm goes with the usual 160x160. Strangely enough, I avoided the Clie because of the screen. I LOVE the brightness, but the resolution made the text too thin to read at a distance. If I was a photographer, it would be another story of course... :)

RE: m515
Altema @ 11/23/2001 10:32:43 AM #
Oh, I forgot to mention that you can get a 16Mb RAM upgrade for the M5xx series now, but I would not bother unless you have a brighter than normal M505. It would not make sense to invest in a device unless you were happy with the screen,.. especially with new devices in the pipeline.

RE: m515
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/23/2001 12:51:19 PM #
How do you know what if/what/when the m525 will be? I thought the m525 will be the OS5/ARM device? I just played with the Clie 760 this morning and beamed Zap!2016 from my device to the Clie display model. I tell you, I was not that impressed with the Clie 760. Zap ran VERY SLOW and the hard buttons were not very game-friendly. Also, depsite the 320x320, the graphics were quite pixelated on the Clie. It was "too sharp" which ironically cause pointy edges on each of the graphics. That combined with the Clie slower processing of the game (probably because of the 320x320) caused me to prefer my m505. The Clie is still nice though.

RE: m515
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/23/2001 1:10:40 PM #
I think palm should just stop doing anything (let Sony and handspring keep making palm devices), then they jump right to an ARM based handheld.

RE: m515
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/23/2001 1:11:33 PM #

I think Palm needs to add the following on top of your suggestions. Then they will have a winner that can go head to head with the Cli? and other models.

_Jog dial & back button (almost everyone else does.)
_Enhanced speaker & microphone (should be standard on all handhelds)
_Virtual graffiti (possibly the greatest inovation of the Palm OS directly in recent time)

Keep in mind, all of these things already exist, its just a matter of them integrating some well needed functionality.

If Palm made a model with all these features, I would gladly buy it. Until then though The Handera is the most useful for me.

Zap 2016 slow down
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/23/2001 4:27:47 PM #
Yes, sap 2016 will run very slow. The reason is that if zap cant understand the handheld its being used on it will revert to old standered processing(it uses different modes on different pdas). I emailed the author, and that is what he told me. He even emailed me a pre release copy of the updated version, and it works perfectly!

Need to be done

Coyote67 @ 11/24/2001 5:27:58 AM #
Some people have made good suggestions for what Palm should do for their next device. I think I'll add what the basic features should be for any new handheld.

1.Virtual Graffiti - I really don't see this to be a big deal, but everyone else does, so make people happy

2. Dual Expansion - The Handera is a great example, lets hope for a Visor with Springboard/SD/MMC slot. I'd also like too see Springboard 2, a more powerful one that would alow CF adapters to use the microdrive or whatever. A true CF to Springboard adapter would be amazing.

3. A Jog dial - I WANT A DAMN JOG DIAL. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PDA COMPANYS!?!

4. Ipaq es que screen - gba screen=BAD

5. A good speaker - I want to be able to use my pda as an alarm clock. And what would be REALLY great, a headphone jack.

6. Face plates - blah blah blah, face plates are a good idea. Nokia didn't sell those little crappy phones without attracting somehting very important...style. Style is important.

7. Game compatible buttons - When I say game compatible buttons, I mean NOT CLIE BUTTONS. Buttons that make playing games on the handheld easy. I might turn to the snapnplay if this doesn't come out.

I guuess thats it, please add whatever you want. Sorry if this was slanted a lil too much toward the handspring camp. I really can't help it, I'm not only a client....well I'm only a client

FACE PLATES??? You want friggin FACE PLATES???? Are you the same guy that requested "American Cranberry and Patriot Blue"??? Forget about Face Plates, man, these are not a necessity! Who wants a chintsy plastic piece of crap snapped onto my device when we can have an all-metal m5xx???? Dual Expansion??? C'mon this isn't necessary either. Game Buttons??? Most of your requests are childish and not needed. Let's keep it simple for Palm: Better Screen, More Memory! When you start asking for everything under the sun, you dilute the focus and never get anything. Let's stick to what's important! SCREEN AND MEMORY! Not friggin colored face plates!!!!!

RE: Need to be done
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/24/2001 8:24:40 AM #
I just cannot understand Palm's approach - it mystifys me. Perhaps Sony refused to allow Palm the use of its high res LCD screen...I don't know...but if the problem is getting access to screens of sufficient quality - then either drop back to liscencing the OS or find an alternative company to supply good high res LCDs. It really is quite simple business management - all the layoffs in the world cannot account for the losses that are the result of having a very very poor flagship model (m505) now out for 6+ months without sign of a replacement. And being coy with release dates and times and specs re any possible m515/525 etc is pathetic. You can afford to be coy if you are sony. They are bigger and can afford to be arrogant with releasing products. Palm cannot. It started as a small company and is in perilous danger of winding up that way...Palm is focussing on the small things - worker numbers and different coloured versions of the poor flagship unit they have...instead of getting their eyes back on the ball and developing something outstanding that would impress instead of underwhelm its target market. It seems they go the bare minimum at each and every turn...this can only go one way long term as Sony has the cashflow to outlast almost anyone in a war of attrition. For gods sake - get out a 16Mb+, 66MHz high res unit and stop the financial brinksmanship that is coming close to writing Palm into the annals of economic history.

Sony, the way to GO!
srs112233 @ 11/24/2001 11:42:43 AM #
Well, I am only counting on SONY from now on to make my wishes come true, becuase they are the only ones that have the kind of $$$ lying around. Yes, 66mhz proccesor , Sony go make it already! The better buttons are not JUST for games, its hard enough to wake up in the morining and try to figure out what, where, and which button to push.
They did do a pretty darn good job on that T600, but i just want technology to create smaller chips and all, so you can fit the faster processor, The ENHANCED SPEAKER capable of voice play back, A microphone, And possibly mp3 player, and better graphics chip.
Now dont flame me for saying mp3 player, that is why i said possibly, And frankly if those ppc's ran palm os i would have gotton one of those ipaqs.
But if palm dies, will they need to sell the palm os to some company?

RE: Need to be done

RE: Need to be done
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/24/2001 3:41:34 PM #
what needs to be done is,

1) look at Epoc OS and Newton OS and see what they did with their interface.
2) forget about Dragon BAll Z ... that thing Mot makes ~~ and focus on Palm OS on Arm's development.
3) Mp3/Audio support in OS
4) dual expansion is nice but not necessary (if going to have dual I'll prefer Mem Stick + SD)
5) I guess those buttons need some rethinking ... I mean you are going to shift the OS strategy, maybe redefining those hardware buttons would be essential.
6) bluetooth support
7) Wireless Lan Support
8) the screen ... I don't know .... I like sony's screen.
9) Soft grafitti is nice .. You hired so many Newton programmer .. what are you doing with them ~~

No-one wants Virtual Grafitti...

2) more flexible screen size (so hardware developers can make palm display in other dimensions)
3) faster/easier input
4) feels more like writing on paper

ok let me try to rebuttal myself:

1) we don't need bigger screen
2) again we want the same screen size, it would be a nightmare for developers to program for different screen sizes
3) I think hardware grafitti is already very easy to use and fast
4) same as "3"

Do I consider myself a troll, no ! I am just telling you what I think would be good for palm in general. No one knows what's good for everyone, but I used to use newton, and they got software grafitti and natural HWR, which I think is awesome.

of course you could think of more than 100 reasons to say that hardware grafitti is great and all, but that doesnt make people who want software grafitti trolls.

the reality is palm is moving to ARM and redesigning Palm OS with the help from BeOS's engineers, and they are more focus in networking, communications and multimedia. And they have the chance and skills the totally redesign and improve the palm platform. Are you going to tell them,

"we don't want bigger/high res screen , we don't need software grafitti, if you are going to make palm OS like that we are going to not buy your palm!"

We need to PRIORITIZE our NEEDS, starting with the most important first. I say an M5xx with:

1. Hi-Res, Bright Color Screen
2. 16MB+ RAM
3. ???

Please try to separate "Needs" vs. "Nice to Haves".

sorry - I meant "seperate".

How Palm can survive:
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/25/2001 9:05:05 PM #
1) Clean house and get rid of 1/3 of its redundant management and executive positions. Many of its executives (old Apple rejects) don't do anything other than collect large paychecks.

2) Hire an effective CEO.

3) License the Sony high resolution color screen and release a version of the m505 with this screen, 16 MB of RAM and an effective launcher that uses the SD card seamlessly. Either buy Launcher III or pay HandEra to develop AutoCard. (PiDirect and MSMount would be technical support nightmares for Palm.)

4) Release the new model ASAP. Spring 2002 is too late.

5) Trim the fat from its operation.

6) Renegotiate their OS licensing agreement with Sony. $30 per license is reasonable.

7) Flood the low end of the market (high schools, department stores, WalMarts, Targets) with cheap m100. They now realize Palms are a commodity, just like any other piece of electronics.

8) Attack the business market. This is where the money is.

9) Sell its soul to Sony and beg for mercy.

10) Forget it - they're screwed.

"...other than the two trolls who keep posting here claiming "everyone" wants it. (Mike Cane - this is your cue to say how essential Virtual grafitti is!)"

Damn right.

I dont think it was a rumor

More like fact. I could have sworn it said it on Cnet.

Read the damn article, it says
Citing anonymous sources, Cnet is reporting a rumor that Palm intends another round of lay-offs in the next few weeks.

Settle down everyone!

All they are doing is slowly getting rid of all of the slackers in hardware design and software development and anyone related to marketing, and support and um . . . um . . .

On second thought, they might as well cut everyone and do a free-agent draft or something . .
