Oh! And my new DVD player can´t play my VHS tapes! What a shame...

Crap, my new agp vid card can't plug into my pci only mobo. Well I guess the vid card is **** and I will ignore the fact that it is a new line all together. God I suck, I also eat paste in between posts.

If you short-sited individuals can't see the importance of expandability in a PDA then you probably don't even need a Treo in the first place, stick to your pen-and-paper day planner.

The VHS/DVD analogy really doesn't apply. A proper analogy would be more like a DVD player vs. a DVD player with upgradable codecs.

You Handspring fans have got to admit that either Springboard is not an in important feature of Visors or that they left an important feature out of the Treo. Take your pick. Either way you lose in my opinion.

I agree. Leaving out a slot (for memory) of any sort on the Treo was a big mistake. Even an MS slot would have been better than nothing.

Backing up is the killer app! Improving the battery standby time above 60 hours or whatever it is won't mean much if you have to lug a notebook around to hotsych to.

Seems like everyone else is going from 1 slot to 2, but these guys chose to go from 1 to none. Ouch!

MS - Actually becoming Standard?

nish @ 1/29/2002 4:38:38 PM #
Seems that at least a few companies see the MS becoming an industry standard, not just a palm-sponsored proprietory format!

RE: MS - Actually becoming Standard?
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/29/2002 4:44:23 PM #
"Palm sponsored" what the hell? MS is a Sony format - nothing to do with Palm per-se. It's simply one more expansion technology supported by the VFS manager...

Give me SD or give me death... MS sucks

RE: MS - Actually becoming Standard?
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/29/2002 5:05:17 PM #
Seeing that they developed and released this one after their ones for CF, SmartMedia and MMC/SD, I wouldn't read too much into the release of this device. Lowest priority gets done last.

RE: MS - Actually becoming Standard?
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/29/2002 5:17:56 PM #
Exactly. Is that why there is no SD memplug yet? They've announced an SD memplug, but no date yet (they gave release dates for the MS memplug months ago).

RE: MS - Actually becoming Standard?
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/29/2002 5:24:59 PM #
Looks like I was in error, yep, the SD one won't be available for a few more weeks. Anyhow CF and SmartMedia were done long ago.

RE: MS - Actually becoming Standard?
Coyote67 @ 1/29/2002 6:28:25 PM #
Actually its SD/MMC. With CF,SD,MMC,SM,and MS covered for the Visor...what other memory types will memplug need to develop springboards for? Zip Disk Springboard? Seriously though. These springboards just go to show how much more powerful and robust expansion for the Visor line is. With a price tag of $50-$60, this is one sweet deal.

I try not to get as excited about these things as some of the other posters in this thread apparently have gotten, but I just wanted to add that the Clie really is, IMHO, the best Palm OS PDA out there. When I say I have owned ALL of them, I mean it. I have (except the Edge . . never had one of those). Anyway, I must agree that Sony could very well walk away with this from a hardware perspective. IMHO, the Sony hardware and Palm OS have combined for the perfect handheld.

Thanks for listening.

STOP FLAMING PLEASE
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/29/2002 7:36:15 PM #
Why is it that folks are driven to flame each other over whose Palm handheld is better. Why all of the in-fighting. What are we becomming, the Democratic Party? If you have something you want to say, just say it. No need to go ad homonyn (sp?) Geez!

Ummm, no. Sony isn't even in the top five handheld makers. They are a niche player.

Move

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/29/2002 5:57:32 PM #
Anyone who still has a Handspring should just give up and buy a Clie. The T615c smokes everything else out there.

RE: Move
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/29/2002 6:18:13 PM #
yeah the t615c is great for starting camp fires of course try to rub 2 styli together is kinda hard when their that small, but after playing with its buttons and trying to read its screen you'll be pretty motivated to start something on fire

RE: Move
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/29/2002 6:37:31 PM #
WOW!!!! This camp fire boy is such a tosser huh???
Probably thinks M125 is a neat handheld??? lol

Get a life ya loser!!!! And burn those Visors, since
they gonna be camp fire 'ready' in another 6 months anyhows!!!

LMFAO

I don't want to be rude but you cannot compare a Sony Clie with a Handspring, wouldnt be fair just by looking at them side by side, the Visors look very cheap, like toys with lousy craftmanship, you cannot beat the japanese in quality.

Portable Innovation = Great Company

TDS @ 1/29/2002 10:24:46 PM #
I bought my Smartmedia adapter when they were brand-spankin new and have never had a bit of trouble with it. It rarley leaves my Prism. PI comes out with updates every few weeks. Not necessarily bug fixes, but new enhancements, speedups, compatability fixes, etc... They really seem to want to put out a quality product!
I suspect that the SD slot will eventually be the dominant player in the flash memory market, but while we have a choice of four popular formats, it is great to know there is a company to support them!

I would not doubt if PI eventually figures out a way to make IO devices work in their adapters.

Does anyone here have the PiViewer app? Could you post it somewhere? I don't know wether it's a commercial application, but I can't seem to find it anywhere...

RE: Portable Innovation = Great Company
Coyote67 @ 1/30/2002 6:15:07 AM #
I second the nod for PI as a great company. I too have the smartmedia adapter and the only time is leaves visor is when I'm using my wifi sboard. Its one of the best expansion modules ever rlsed imho. Has everything you would need program wise, it has great support from the manuf., and the price tag is awesome. My USB smartmedia reader/writer for my pc cost more than my memplug. The ability to pickup an adapter for the memory that you already use is great.

PiViewer App
TDS @ 1/31/2002 9:17:27 AM #
The Piviewer App is a built in program that is transferred to your Memplug every time you download a new "flash upgrade" to your memplug. I have never seen it available as a seperate program.

How about the other way round

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/30/2002 6:57:08 AM #
Compact flash adaptor for the Clie, Memory stick is my only "sticking" point for buying a Clie.

RE: How about the other way round
nish @ 1/30/2002 10:57:28 AM #
I agree with you on this, but it's highly unlikely that sony will do this if you consider the fact that they want to establish MS as their standard.

They're probably hoping (IMHO, quite rightly) that the sheer product excellence of the clies will make people buy them, inspite of the fact that only MS can be used in clies.

RE: How about the other way round
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 11:08:01 AM #
I guess in a perfect world you'll record TV on your Sony PVR, then download a program on to stick then view on the train on a Clie.

On the other hand 64mbCF is UKP17.99, and MS UKP60. No contest.

RE: How about the other way round
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/1/2002 12:01:28 PM #
Sony do have a CF adapter available for the Clié, but you'll have to import the unit from Japan.

MStick Block Size Warning!!

mikecane @ 1/30/2002 8:45:57 AM #
I was given a 16MB Mstick as a gift for my S320.

I managed to virtually *fill* the Stick with just 2.5MBs of text files!!

How is this possible? You must see the details at

http://makeashorterlink.com/?U36D4295

-- it's too long to go into here.

RE: MStick Block Size Warning!!
jpfeiffer @ 1/30/2002 3:55:12 PM #
The same thing happens on your PCs hard drive. It has to do with the fact that space on a storage device is allocated in certain sized blocks, rather than just on an only-as-much-needed basis.

So every file is allocated X blocks for its storage, not the exact number of bytes. Those blocks range anywhere from 4kB up, depending how large the storage device is and how many addressable blocks it can support.

If you put 1000 1 byte files on a device that allocates space in 4kB clusters, you'd realize that your 1kB in total data is taking up 4MB in space.

A crime? No, that's just the way the technology works.
