Drummer4Life05 @ 2/19/2002 9:09:41 AM #
$800 for the 1GB CF!? That's outrageous! Ii'll just have to wait a few years for it to come down so it's affordable for EVERYDAY PEOPLE!

You are paying the early adopter's tax. The IBM Microdrive was released last year at $1,000. It is now selling for as low as $300. The SanDisk one will go through a similar drop. Or you can get the IBM one, though it is slower and, I think, draws more power.

*sigh*
when will SD catch up!!! or will it ever? Its taking ages for Sandisk to come up with the 256Mb card which they promised last year.

Ed, the Microdrive is not 100% Compact Flash compliant. Certainly it uses more power, but as personally this detail could condition someone buying it, it actually DOESN'T WORK with devices uncapable of providing all the power it needs. For instance, a lot of CF digital cameras DO NOT support the microdrive. The same thing goes for the TRGpro if I'm not mistaken...

I doubt that SD or MS will catch up with CF at any point. CF is much bigger physically than SD or MS, and so whatever current technology allows to fit in a certain physical area, CF will always be able to store more just because it's bigger.

Having said that, it is about time we saw 256MB SD and MS cards though.

Cheers

HandEra lists the Microdrive on their list of compatible storage cards. If that's only the 330 and not the TRGpro, they don't say so anywhere I can find.

Well Justin this:

It's NOT for EVERYDAY PEOPLE. If you can't fork the money, that's your problem. Just stick with your 8 MB SD card.

Did it ever occur to you that some companies need the massive storage in a handheld for their employees. And that the price is cost effective for them.

Huh? I guess not.

The Microdrive is Compact Flash compliant as far as I know. Yes it requires more power than other devices, but as far as I know those levels fall within the CF spec.

Sure some devices do not provide enough power to run it. It works on the TRGpro, but it drains the batteries fairly quickly. I highly doubt it would work on a Visor with a CF adaptor as there is nowhere near enough power on the Springboard slot (as per the Springboard spec). The device not providing enough power has nothing to do with the Microdrive being Compact Flash compliant.

as per the Springboard spec?

Give me a link to that please. I have a CF adapter for my Platinum and would love a 1G CF card for it. While you're at it, give me a link to the Handera spec where it shows a power rating higher than the springboard.

You can use a web browser as well as the next guy. Hit the developer section of handspring.com and handera.com, and/or www.compactflash.org

The coles notes version though is that http://www.handspring.com/developers/Devkit2/Springboard_Development_Guide.pdf will reveal a maximum current of 100 mA (enough for a memory card but not enough for a power mode 1 device).

The CF spec allows for two power modes. Mode 0 is up to 75mA, and power mode 1 is for up to 500mA devices. Being able to run in power mode 1 for any length of time is the reason the HandEra 330 went to 4 AAA's or optionally an 8.4volt Lithium-ion pack (or no batteries at all if you plug it in).

Well, I would call NOT COMPLIANT a product that doesn't work under normal conditoins, wouldn't you?
The Microdrive has the CF form factor and I/O specs, but needs more power.

I would say if it doesn't work with all CF adapters it's not CF compliant...

By your standard most CF modems and 802.11b cards won't be "compliant" either since they use too much power. Compliancy generally deals with meeting specifications, which the Microdrive does.

Someone else was asking about using a 1GB card with their CF adaptor on their Visor. This SanDisk card should work fine for that. It won't draw much (if any) more power than current CF memory cards.

Karshikinpa @ 2/19/2002 4:11:47 PM #
Did noone else notice this is going to be a 2.8MB per second card. That is the SanDisk Ultra line of cards. It is equivalent to a 18.66x speed CF card! That is damn fast. The 512MB that is out now for $350 street is a 4X card at 1.2MB/sec. $800 for this speed of the card is a great price compared to other CF cards. Also, this is not faster than the MicroDrive based on on-the-box specs. IBM says it can transfew at 4MB/sec.

I recently read the BTExact Technologies whitepaper. It states that by 2003, creditcard sized 11 terabyte storage capability will be available for $50. The future is bright for those of us who are wanting more in smaller packages. If the folks at BTExact are correct, you shouldn't have to wait any more than a year to get way more than 1 gb for way less.

$30 wine guide?

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/19/2002 5:21:52 PM #
Overpriced tripe.

I could buy the same information in book form for less than half that price. Too bad so many palm shareware authors don't have more reasonable pricing models... economies of scale are wonderful things.

Then buy the book. I guess you could manage your cellar using the blank end pages and ensure you always have the book in your pocket.

From my point of view a paper "wine buying guide" is not much use if it is sitting on the shelf at home when you staring at the restaurant wine list.

From my experience most decent wine guides are in the $20-25 range. I think a $4-9 premium is not too unreasonable given the extra utility you get from the palm guide.

Remember the Palm guide's content is updated more frequently than a physical book. In addition to this you must pay 100% of your original purchase price to update the physical book. Im sure LandWare will offer special pricing on subsequent years of WE guide.

I agree and books are produced and sold in far greater numbers than Palm OS software.

You may be able to buy a book that costs less, but then you would have to carry both the oversized book and your Palm around.

And in the book, can you enter variables and perform a search for specifics?

And when new wine data comes out, how do you upgrade your book? With a pen or pencil?
