RE: N760's death is assured
btw, since OS 5 will be shipped to licensees this Spring/Summer, will be North American and European release of the NR series be MX based??
RE: N760's death is assured
It will be available in English in the U.S. in about a month. Can't you wait that long? The other versions of the OS aren't going to work on the NR. There are too many changes in the NR. I have no idea what the 770's OS would make of the 480 by 320 screen but I'm fairly certain it wouldn't be usable. And were you planning to write the virtual Graffiti drivers yourself?
RE: N760's death is assured
Wouldn't it be weird if...
Perhaps the Clamie I and Clamie II ???
RE: Wouldn't it be weird if...
I'd call it the Proteus. He was someone from Greek mythology who could change into any shape and foretell the future.

SUCKERS!
Guess what, now you WON'T find ANY accessories for that N760 you just bought a few months ago... This is pathetic. I truly feel sorry for all you Sony buyers.
At least companies like palm, handspring, compaq and Hp have tried to maintain "universal" connectors between updates to their pda's, BUT sony seems to think that those who own an N series Pda should now dump it in favor of the NR/T series. I'm not a sony basher but short lifecycles like these with no backwards compatability from newer products is just a blatant attempt to rip off the consumer.
RE: SUCKERS!
ok thanks for your info. I really don't want to reply to this thread, but I think some action should be taken against morons.
1) look at the news, N-series can always use those MS modules accessories
2) the serial port is never the best way to expan your device, but it does have accessories that uses that port.
3) is there even a mp3 player on the Palm M-series, what are you barking about !? no accessories who has not accessories ?

Gee, thanks for your concern!! Good thing I already got my keyboard, cell phone cable, memory sticks, and my 3 cases before they all magically disappear. It's been awful the past several months using such a lowly device, having to put up with fonts that actually look nice, never having an opportunity to use my up/down button because the jogdial grabs my attention, viewing pics in such great detail that it causes extra strain on my eyes. I only wish I could have seen your post before that dark day when I made my purchase decision.

RE: SUCKERS!
Well I'd leave off #3 in your counter argument, because the M100 series indeed does (as does the V series).
RE: SUCKERS!
Actually, there's a "SUCKERS!" post over in the thread on the new cradles, too. Methinks this is a PocketPC troll.
RE: SUCKERS!
RE: SUCKERS!
Ok, I see, so he is a POCKETPC/Microsoft TROLL !
RE: SUCKERS!
I wonder what PDA he has?
RE: SUCKERS!
Don't the S-Series (since their FIRST CLIE, the S300) and the N-Series share the same connector? So, they've only changed the connector for the T-Series, which was probably required due to smaller shape of the devices. And hey, they're KEEPING the T-Series connector in these new NR models.
Handspring has done the same thing. They changed connectors once, for their Visor Edge. Again, I assume it was simply to allow for the smaller form factor. Visor Solo, Deluxe, Platinum, Prism, Pro, and Neos all have the SAME connector. Hell, aside from the Prism, they all have the SAME body shape.
Palm has done it how many times? Three? Four? Let's count. Original Palm devices (Pilot Pros, etc etc). Palm III/VII series (assuming this was different to the originals, not sure). Palm V Series. Palm m100, m105. And finally the 'universal' connector. Even if they've only done it three times (originals, m100's, universals), that's STILL twice more than either Sony OR Handspring.
Of all company's, Palm appears to be the worst at propagating "blatant attempt[s] to rip off the consumer." m505 -> m515 anyone? How about m105 -> m125?

"Thank god i have my 3 year replacement plan. I can switch my N-760 for an NR 70V ^_^ free of charge baby! woohoo!!!"
I have the Best Buy 3 year extended Warranty. Is that what you were talking about. Can you "trade up" and get another pda? I would pay the difference. Does anyone know if BB actually will allow you to trade up? I did not see that in the agreement. Do you have to bs them and tell them that your pda does not work to get a trade up deal? Or is this a totally different plan than what I have. Mine was 60.00 for extended 3 year. Not sure if it's the same plan.
Thanks in advance.

Anyway, It's good to see you folks liven up a bit, it's too boring in these comment sections somtimes. Also by the way, I DO NOT own a PPC (God forbid). I do own a palm os device but I won't mention what it is since that has no relevance to my original comment.
And as far as the Sony NR series, I do stand by the original comment that sony will only disenfranchise many current clie owners by discontinuing items too quickly and creating new connectors for peripherals and such. ANd I have to agree with another post on here that mentions the clumsy clam shell design.
Good money down says the NR won't sell well in the US.
But, That's just my opinion.
Jolly Good. See you folks at the next Sony news item.

The problem is PalmSource is an independent compan for about 2 months only.
And when Sony make any progress in the Palm OS, those Anti-Sony Zealots will say it's not standard or it's proprietory and it'll lose support in 3 months.
it's funny how contradicting people could be
Quite possibly the news I've been waiting for
But now I get the message...the gods WANT me to buy the new Sony Clie! I have seen the light...!!
RE: Quite possibly the news I've been waiting for
Hopefully the data was synched up before all that happened.
By the way, I'd suggest you be more careful with your next PDA ;)
RE: Quite possibly the news I've been waiting for
Well.. at least that's what I would do because no way my wife would let me get YAP (yet another Palm) as long as I had a functioning one.
Any chance of seeing your ex-Palm V in the Palm Graveyard before you bury it?
Jim
RE: Quite possibly the news I've been waiting for
Get the Clie ASAP.

On the other hand...
If you run into a burning bush that says "buy a Day Timer", I'd do it.

Old Palms are dropping all over ...
Like the Palm IIIc in its day, these SONYs seem to have great screens but they have yet to achieve the connectability options of the newer Palms or Handspring or Handera.
Thanks, Robrecht

First color model of Clie, S500C.
RE: error iin article
"Though a few people have doubted whether the NR series would be available outside of Japan, Sony hasn't released a Clié in Japan and then not also done so in the U.S. since the very first generation of its handheld line."
The S500 was, with the S300, the first generation of Clies. Since then, every model released in Japan has been released in the US.
Sold out on US Developer Site
Haven't seen any news there on the NR models either.
What about something else than NR series?
I say that because my dream device would be the NR series, without the clamshell and keyboard... just the 66Mhz VZ, camera, sound, virtual graffiti :-))
But I must be dreamin'

RE: What about something else than NR series?
Take a look at this picture:
http://www.clieclub.jp/clie_exbit/pages/nr100_jpg.htm
That's the clear demo version of the NR70V. Look at the area below the keyboard. It is completely taken up with a battery. So about a sixth of this entire handheld is its battery and there are already people expressing concerns about its battery life.
This makes sense as the screen is twice as big as any current Palm OS handheld's and the processor is twice as fast. Just judging from that, the NR series will draw about twice as much power as any current Palm model. The additional DSP chip, well known for sucking down power, is just icing on the cake.
While Sony could make a non-keyboard version of this handheld, I don't believe it would be much smaller because it would still need that battery.
Though someone could still make an argument that they'd be happy with a version that was roughly the same size but lacked a keyboard.

RE: What about something else than NR series?
RE: What about something else than NR series?
The thing would basically be a T615 at .6 inches thickness for the thicker battery. The screen would still fit on the front even if it were soft grafitti 480 by 320. Finding room for hard buttons on front might be tight, but push them all the way to the bottom.
It certainly could be done and it would be smaller overall than the NR70V, but I doubt we will see such. Who knows.
I just like the whole NR70V deal. Size-wize it it all that, same size as Zaurus, N760/710/610, just about right.
RE: What about something else than NR series?
But if sony doesn't release that I'll be happy with the NR serie... If sony ships it to France :-))

I'm happy I got the N760N because the new NR is just to big!
The new NR is cool but the clam shell design, built-in keyboard and larger size is not my cup of tea.
RE: I'm happy I got the N760N because the new NR is just to big!
guess what, your n760 has been discontinued!!
RE: I'm happy I got the N760N because the new NR is just to big!
I have held out for the 66MZ that I think will make WordSmith work better, but it had not been easy to wait with the 760Cs on sale and the T615Cs so small.
I am kinda glad the 760Cs are gone. Now, I won't be so tempted. Hope I like my NR70C as much as all the 760C owners like theirs.

RE: I'm happy I got the N760N because the new NR is just to big!
Do you really think that overnight all 760 models will disapear from shops forever ?
RE: I'm happy I got the N760N because the new NR is just to big!
As for the size - yeah it's bigger than the N760C - but once you add a resonable case to the N760C it gets pretty big - whereas the NR series comes complete with its own case - so it may not be much bigger in real life use.

The NR is a cool piece of machinery but I dont like to carry around a pda and a wallet seperately.
