Comments on: Contests Let Developers Compete for Cool Prizes

Several groups have recently announced design contests to allow developers to show off their talents and win cool prizes.

Sony is sponsoring a contest for developers to come up with applications that make use of both Clié handhelds and the Sony Aibo robot. The winner will receive an Aibo ERS-210 and a T615C handheld.

AIBO robot

It looks like Sony is having some trouble getting people to develop applications for the AIBO robot.

LoL .. they could care less about AiBO's applications. The owners' supposed to program movements for AiBO, it'll be stupid to sell a dance sequence for AiBO to AiBO owners, because that's just taking away the fun.

A few months ago I read an article somewhere where a programmer had set up a web site about hacks for the Aibo. Sony's lawyers contacted him saying that he was violating the software agreement or something. I don't know how it turned out, or where I read it. Maybe someone else here can help with that.

No wonder they are looking for programmers!

Hey, I decided to do a search. Here's where I read it:

"It looks like Sony is having some trouble getting people to develop applications for the AIBO robot."

These robots learn by themselves.
AIBO is a hot item in Japan, too expensive for the american market though.

More like too stupid to go over well in America.

In this land we prefer real dogs for companionship. If I had one of these Aibo's I would feed it to my German Shepard...

but who's more stupid??
Have you noticed how many AIBO's-wannabe toys are on sale here in Jerry Springer's land?

America has always been considered a low-mid tech market, that's why many asian companies don't even bother to release their high-end products here.

How about some *useful* apps?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/10/2002 4:50:57 PM #
Geez, talk about a waste of time. How about sponsoring a contest for something *useful* like new applications that take advantage of high res screens or the virtual graffiti area? Can't imagine there are all that many people that care about using their Clie with an Aibo (the latter being an overpriced toy for those with more money than they know what to do with).

Actually They did last year, in Japan only though, the contest was called "Grand Prix De Clie"

The big winner was Hiroki Takahashi, he's the author of Crs-Launcher, Crs-MeDoc and several other Clie apps.

RE: How about some *useful* apps? - like "MUTE"
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/10/2002 6:35:30 PM #
I agree. Do you know what we need? A simple App called "MUTE" which simply has a one big "MUTE" button that you press and it toggles the sound on your device. Should be able to be like 4K in size and freeware???? I wish I had some programming skills - I'd write the damn thing myself! I searched for this but can't find anything like it.

Download VolumeDA it's freeware, it's a DA (similiar to a hack), run the DA, click OFF, then OK and all the sounds are off.

And it's 10k, cuz u can adjust volume and stuff too.

Thanks but I was looking for a No-Hack/DA. I appreciate the info though. I hope a programmer comes through for me someday.

In the current version of the OS, a non-Sony developer could not write such a program without it being a hack or DA. As either of those it's a snap, but not possible otherwise.

Read your manuals before you ask!!

These prizes are ridiculous!

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/10/2002 5:02:55 PM #
So I'm supposed to go out and buy a Clie and an AiBo, create a program for them and I will win another Clie and another AiBO? I don't see the point.
Soooooo Stupid, It actually HURTS....
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/10/2002 5:19:40 PM #
This goes beyond laughable ) Sony should be ashamed of their pathetic stance when it comes to developers.

Don't they realize how much work there is in developing an application?!?

I have a great idea for an app for this dumb contest..

Us developers can run out and spend $$$ on a Clie and Aibo and make a Palm app that will have little Aibo lick his own butt with just own grafitti stroke )
Then when we win the prize of another Clie and Aibo, we can make the robot dogs lick each others butts ! :)

Sony.. you are starting to look like a big dubm robot dog yourselves. Come back when you actually learn what the PDA market is all about.

RE: These prizes are ridiculous!
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/10/2002 5:25:10 PM #
No. If you actually were a Palm OS developer (which you aren't or you would know this), you would downloda the Sony ROM files and use the Palm OS Emulator. I haven't looked at the Aibo dev tool, but im guessing they software that lets you 'program' the Aibo without actually requiring you to own one.
RE: These prizes are ridiculous!
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/10/2002 5:36:13 PM #
Well, I am a Palm developer and I can assure you that you would need a real Clie and Aibo to do complete development and testing. There is just no way around it. You can use the emulators for a large part of development but it all comes down to the actual devices in the end.

YES. You WOULD need the actual hardware.

RE: Soooooo Stupid, It actually HURTS....
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/10/2002 5:54:22 PM #
LOL, OK, picture the finals where everyone is showing off their programs. Your turn comes up, you enter a grafitti stroke and point your Clie at your Aibo, and it goes off and starts "straddling" the other Aibo's :P
RE: These prizes are ridiculous!
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/10/2002 8:10:49 PM #
hahaha, Now there's a sure winner

Then, after the Aibo's have offspring, Sony can stop having these cheesy competitions )
