Mapping Heats Up

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/16/2002 10:31:25 AM #
Seems like there are new innovations in mapping software coming to the Palm. We just saw Mapopolis 4.2 with routing. Now Rand McNally is planning a product, and Delorme is replacing Solus Pro with XMap that will include routing. (See Delorme web site).

I hope to see a competitive review!

Hey Ed!

How about a poll on the best mapping software?

NR70V is only $489.10

Before 4/19, the NR70V is only $489.10, I think.

Thanks, Robrecht

I couldn't get that coupon to work. You get the 10% off but not the other coupon. It says it has already been redeemed.

Bummer. So that gets it down to around $540

NOT DELL!

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/16/2002 12:30:41 PM #
Im warning everyone here considering on buying at dell! beware! they say its in stock then gives you a shipping date then on the expected shipping day they give you an email staying its delayed and you need to respond to 2 days or else the order will be cancel.

Calling them will be a maze of menus and numbers. you'll never be able to speak with a real operator.

this is just my experience and ive read other dell horror stories too. I ended up regreting on trying to save $$ when i wasted a lot of time trying to check the website if its been shipped yet.

but like i say..thats my experience

RE: NOT DELL!
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/16/2002 1:21:22 PM #
I have ordered the last 4 PDA's from them and have had no problems, I have had some arive before the expected shipping date in fact I have order maybe a couple dozen items from them and never had a problem even when I had to return memory it was easy. I would say of the dozen or so online stores I have used they have been as good or better than all of them IMHO.
RE: NOT DELL!
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/16/2002 1:44:43 PM #
I bought a Dell just about a month ago and it arrive just as expected from them It was ordered on a Monday morning. An email the next day said it would be mailed for delivery at the end of the week or beginning of the following week. On that Friday, it was shipped and arrived on the following Tuesday. I was impressed by that speed. Needless to say, satisfied here.

Ahm... Actually Dell has the been so successful lately because of their great customer experience and customer service.

The compliant link you mention is *nothing* when comparing to other big names, such as Compaq, HP, and Sony.

Buy PC online? Buy it at Dell!

Dell: good service

"Good to hear that most of you have had good experiences with dell.

but this link have people complaining about dells service:"

hey, don't mislead people!

Dell is the number one US computer retailer right now, their customer service is rated one of the best in the industry, so even if 0.1% of their customers have service problems (you cannot satisfy everybody, obviously!) you'll get a large number of complains, like the individual who began this thread.. so keep things in perspective.

Personally I have ordered many things at dell.com and by phone, no problems at all, the phone system is not much different compared to other retailers.

NR70V is officially flawless now.

Liam @ 4/16/2002 2:01:04 PM #
I could not say no to this. Ordered it from Dell today and paid $489. They said they had it in stock and it would be shipped today or tomorrow. THANKS for the tip! I was about to pay Amazon $499 for the NR70 (sans camera). Anybody want to buy my m500?

Liam in N.Y.

how is that possible if the best price with 2 coupons
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/16/2002 2:30:59 PM #
is $529.10? That minus 10% and minus $10 and free shipping. Not to mention that NR70V is out of stock (never being in stock).
What's the point of misleading people?

RE: NR70V is officially flawless now.
Liam @ 4/16/2002 3:11:44 PM #
Mislead who?

10% of $599 is $59.90

$50 off is $50 off.

$599-$59.90-$50=$489.10

Dell said they had it in stock. I've never had a problem with them and I don't think the guy at Dell was misleading me. Even if it ships late, the release date is "supposed" to be May.

RE: NR70V is officially flawless now.
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/16/2002 3:34:48 PM #
when you pre-order with Dell, do you py right away, or are you billed when it ships?
RE: NR70V is officially flawless now.
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/16/2002 4:00:54 PM #
How are you getting the $50 off? I went to the BeSynch page and got the two coupons. Put them in at the Dell site. It reported -$59 for the 10% off and minus $10 for the coupon.

Total was $529.

How are people getting to $489?

RE: NR70V is officially flawless now.
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/16/2002 4:19:26 PM #
Careful how you phrase things. You haven't received the unit, yet are using the term "flawless" and "officially" in the same sentence. Hyperbole sometimes backfires.

Perhaps you could say, "Seems like a much better value now." But "officially flawless?" Dell has a "spotty" record when it comes to shipping PDAs. If I were you, I'd wait until I actually have the unit in hand, have used it for about a month, and find it to be near-perfect before I shoot my mouth off.

You'll look pretty silly if:
1) Dell ships late - even later than the May release. ("I don't think the guy at Dell was misleading me." ??? Wow, you're a trusting soul.)
2) The NR-70V doesn't meet your expectations.
3) You get a unit that is somehow faulty due to a "first-run flaw."
4) The NR-70V doesn't meet your expectations.
5) The unit develops a problem over time--after all, the Achilles heel of innovation and function is sometimes stability.
6) The NR-70V doesn't meet your expectations.

Here's hoping your foot doesn't end up in the mouth you've shot off...

Had trouble getting the $489.10 online. The coupon code did not work. I called the toll free number and spoke to a rep. I gave him the coupon number and Dell gave me the discount. I hope it ships this week. $489 is a great price for a PDA that does everything well. The only negative comment I've read about the Sony was about the $599 price tag. Dell sloved that...

$50 off, 10% off, no tax, no shipping. Great.

Some poor guy is going to pay $650 (plus tax) next month.

At least in the US anyhow, I think it is technically illegal for them to bill you before it ships.

Ok Listen closly to get the Sony Clie NR70V for $489.10!

Go to the dell.com website press the NR70v to add to cart, it will automatically give you a 10%($59.90) off. This will bring the total to $539.10. Now here is the great part go to http://www.techbargains.com/uniquecoupon.cfm , this will give each person that clicks on the link a INDIVIDUAL and UNIQUE coupon code, a code generator basically. Once the coupon code is inputed your total should be $489.10. But for people like me that live in states (Florida) with Dell factorys you have to pay tax. My grand total was $518.45

Hope this helps. )

Freak!
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/17/2002 3:05:29 AM #
Liam you are a freak!

That coupon code does not work at all, why you try to make people believe that you place the preorder at $489.10 ?

RE: NR70V is officially flawless now.
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/17/2002 3:28:23 AM #
Liam is right!

When I ordered my notebook online on December I had a $50 coupon rebate "preferred customer" or whatever apparently it had already expired, anyway I decided to call them by phone and the sales rep, gave me the discount anyways... he even gave the $100 extra rebate for ordering online only eventhough I ordered it by phone!!

RE: NR70V is officially flawless now.
Liam @ 4/17/2002 11:50:57 AM #
Since you anonymously choose to open your mouth…

“Careful how you phrase things. You haven't received the unit, yet are using the term "flawless" and "officially" in the same sentence. Hyperbole sometimes backfires.”

Officially flawless was meant to be funny. Are you saying the NR70V is garbage? David Pogue of The New York Times reviewed the new Sony. He said, “ Sony is offering you a chance to take home a machine that you might ordinarily encounter on a table at a trade show, labeled ‘Future Concept.’” I’ve read many reviews about the new Sony. Like I said, the only negative comment was the high price. And yes, I want all the extras.

”Perhaps you could say, "Seems like a much better value now." But "officially flawless?" Dell has a "spotty" record when it comes to shipping PDAs. If I were you, I'd wait until I actually have the unit in hand, have used it for about a month, and find it to be near-perfect before I shoot my mouth off.”

Shoot my mouth off? Not sure what you mean. Do you dislike Sony? Or Dell? Sony makes the best consumer electronics - period. I’ve ordered many time from Dell and have no complaints. Dell has no competition.

”You'll look pretty silly if:
1) Dell ships late - even later than the May release. ("I don't think the guy at Dell was misleading me." ??? Wow, you're a trusting soul.)
2) The NR-70V doesn't meet your expectations.
3) You get a unit that is somehow faulty due to a "first-run flaw."
4) The NR-70V doesn't meet your expectations.
5) The unit develops a problem over time--after all, the Achilles heel of innovation and function is sometimes stability.
6) The NR-70V doesn't meet your expectations.”

Look silly? Please!
1)Trusting soul? Guilty on that count. I don’t think Dell or Sony is anxious to screw me.

2,4,6) Doesn’t meet my expectations? Let me see. It has more than twice the resolution (320x480!), twice the processor speed, twice the RAM, MP3, camera, remote, keyboard, jog dial, colour… Shall I go on? And yes, it’s a Sony. Makes my m500 look like a paperweight.

3)First run flaw? It’s a Sony. Have you heard of them? Much more revolutionary than evolutionary.

5) The unit develops a problem over time? True. I might drop it.

”Here's hoping your foot doesn't end up in the mouth you've shot off...”

Sounds very graphic. It’s just a PDA. Don’t try and rain on my parade. I would like to avoid the Sony vs. Palm BS. Should I wait for Palm to release OS 5.0? I’m going gray just thinking about it. The NR70V at $489 is a great deal on a groundbreaking PDA. Case closed. Want to buy my m500?

If you call Dell (and speak to a person) with the code (BE5A578DA205) for the $50 coupon you will pay $489 too. The 10% off is automatic. My credit card has the charge pending today. Dell is 1-800-915-3355. BeSync.Com is correct. You have until 4/19 to take advantage of the discount.

Thanks Ed for the tip. PIC is the best! And no, I am not a freak.

It's nice but VoiceStream only... IM is only AOL, not Yahoo, ICQ, etc. The color Treo might be the one to get in this category (or PPC2002 Phone Edition).

RE: Danger HipTop PDA/Phone
I.M. Anonymous @ 4/17/2002 1:05:49 AM #
What I think is interesting about the hiptop is that applications are going to run on a central server. Therefore applications can be far larger and more powerful than would normally be possible with a PDA.
All the hiptop really has to do is pass imported data to the central server via a 2.5g network and redraw the screen with returned data. I'm not really certain however what happens when you leave the network area.

Best, James Scherber

RE: Danger HipTop PDA/Phone
big_raji @ 4/17/2002 9:10:58 AM #
If apps are running off a central server, sounds like it would be VERY expensive...

As it is right now with GPRS, I'm paying $5 for 150kb... I thought that would be enough, but I find that I use 2kb just for my POP client to talk to my POP server and find out I have no e-mail. Gah.
