Comments on: NR70V Available from Online Stores

Online retailers must have just gotten in shipments of the Sony NR70V because several of them now have it listed as being In Stock. Included in this is Amazon, Best Buy, and Circuit City. All of of these also list the NR70 as In Stock, too. SonyStyle, Sony's own webstore, lists the NR70 as in stock but is still only taking pre-orders on the NR70V. The NR70 has been available at many brick-and-mortar retail stores since the end of last week but this marks the first appearance of the NR70V, which is the more expensive version with the built-in camera.

Saw boxes of them yesterday at Fry's in Sunnyvale

Note that the breaking news is that the NR70_V_ is now available.

The new clie is available @ compusa, and goodguys. How do I know... I was checking one out at these stores. Beautifull screen, and the speaker kicks ass...

And I saw both of the NR70 and NR70V at SonyStyle, San Francisco, today. They have both on display.

I bought one on line at PCConnection yesterday. Their site was not real clear about when it would ship. (As of last night the site was not updated). I checked this morning and it now shows that it shipped yesterday and should be here shortly as Airborn is showing it is out for delivery in Atlanta.

Cheapest Price

I found the cheapest price to be $462, including tax and shipping. Check the link below.

Here are some more price comparisons. I think $462 is a great deal for this PDA.

Note that these are prices for the NR70, NOT the NR70V which is listed at $539-$599 at these price comparison sites (and none of them are listed as being in stock yet)

Dell sold me the NR70V for $489.10. They called me yesterday and said delivery would be May 15th. Ordered the screen protectors from Sony Style. The said May 25th.

RE: Cheapest Price
Dearman @ 5/2/2002 5:18:47 PM #
are you sure it was the NR70V and not the NR70?
there is no camera in the latter of the 2

RE: Cheapest Price
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2002 6:20:06 PM #
dell had an awsome sale a few weeks back which included 10% off all PDAs, a $50 coupon, and another $10 coupon...this brought down the price of the nr70v to $489 bucks....pretty good deal.
RE: Cheapest Price
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2002 11:05:00 PM #
I got the same deal with Dell.

Ordered on 4/16: ETA 4/19
On 4/19, received another email: delay until 5/3
On 5/1, they informed me that ETA is 5/15, I have to call them by 5/3 to hold or cancel the order. I told them I like to hold since I can not find a better deal like this.

I will see what happens when the date nears 5/15...

Hey Liam, you seem to be about 2-3 days in front of me with a Dell order, I just got my notice that it would be 5/15. so, as we get closer to 5/15, if they push it back again can you post? That will give me a couple extra days notice on what is happening.

i know, i know. i'm pathetic.

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/3/2002 12:42:24 PM #
I ordered mine from Dell on 4/19 original ship date was 4/25. It has since been moved to 5/4, we'll see if I actually get it on Tuesday. Can't beat the price, under $500 for the V model with the camera, but now I wish that I hadn't ordered online so I could just find one in a store and pick it up tonight. . .

Sure. Got my screen protector today from Sony Style and they said May 25th. I think paying $10 plus for a piece of thin plastic makes me pathetic too. I think Dell will ship before 5/15. For what we paid we can afford to wait a few more days...

Liam,

thanks! Dell has my order pushed back to 5/17, and I checked on it this morning. I am a little disappointed in the dell system, I thought that they would have had a kick ass way of finding out when something was going to ship. But it just seems to give a tenative date and not update it until it ships.

any news on actual shipments from dell would be appreciated.

thanks!

SonyStyle Pre-order Status?

Ed @ 5/2/2002 3:45:52 PM #
I've read a few things online from people who say they have been told by SonyStyle that their NR70V won't ship until later this month. I'd like to hear some confirmations on this before I write anything about it. I sincerely hope that Sony isn't doing the same thing Palm did last year and punishing the people who pre-ordered from it.

Received this email from sony 4/30

has been delayed and we will not be able to ship your products within the time indicated on our Web site. We are confident, however, that we will be able to ship your order within the next 25 days, 05/25/02.

RE: SonyStyle Pre-order Status?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2002 7:30:43 PM #
I had a preorder at Sony with no indication of a ship date. I was looking around and saw a " usually ships in 24 hours" status at Amazon.

Checked with a live person at Sony and got a dunno. Cancelled the order and placed one with Amazon. Asked for overnight delivery. Just got a confirmation of shipment with delivery 5/4. So we'll see tomorrow!

Also, quit sweating the price thing. Check out American Express's Best Value Guarantee.

Here's what I do. Find the item at the most reputable full price place. Full price and reputable equals getting it fast. Receive item before 99% of the other people who want it. Enjoy. In 45 - 50 days (you have 60 days to file)do a price search and find a questionable, third party supplier who I would never use that has the item for the cheapest price. Print a copy of the web page showing the low price, call AX, send a copy of the invoice, and the web page. Two weeks later you receive a check. Done it many times.

Great tip on the AmEx thing... I wish I knew about it an hour ago when Amazon still had 4 in stock. It now shows not yet available. And my order through Dell shows a "call for ETA". Even though when you call they say "it says it is in production and we must be waiting for parts..." Duh... They do not even know what it is...

So I wait....

RE: SonyStyle Pre-order Status?
ELwuero @ 5/3/2002 12:26:22 AM #
I cancelled my order today after Sony put me on hold for about three minutes trying to get an ETA and then told me they would not have any NR70V's until the middle to late part of the month. I got lucky becuase on the way home I stopped by Fry's and they had them in stock.

RE: SonyStyle Pre-order Status?
Scott R @ 5/3/2002 2:12:44 AM #
FYI, the AmEx price protection for their Blue card was discontinued as of 4/30. In order to get that benefit, you now have to go with one of their Gold cards which has an annual fee.

Albuquerque NM area

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/2/2002 11:02:02 PM #
Anyone know of a store in Alb NM has any on display. CompUSA & BestBuy both didn't have any.
RE: Albuquerque NM area
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/3/2002 2:04:30 PM #
You're kidding, right? I would imagine that in Albuquerque, the ONLY stores that would sell the NR-70 would be CompUSA and Best Buy. I would imagine you should consider yourself lucky that you've even GOT CompUSA and Best Buy.

Face facts - Alburquerque is hardly considered a large consumer electronics market.

RE: Albuquerque NM area
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/3/2002 8:02:45 PM #
Thank you for your useful commentary. And you exactly answered my question. Since you clearly live in Alb and I live there we must be the only two! I'll be sure to look for you next time I ride down to the general store.
RE: Albuquerque NM area
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/3/2002 9:50:26 PM #
You don't have to live in Albuqurque to know it's not exactly New York. I've visited there a few times, and I can say from my experience there that while it is NOT some backwater town, you've truly got to be kidding if you think there will be stores besides Best Buy and CompUSA that will carry the new Clie.

To put it another way, keep dreaming if you think there's a SonyStyle brick-and-mortar outlet in the Albuquerque area, and you just didn't realize it, or it's kind of a far drive across town.

RE: Albuquerque NM area
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/4/2002 11:21:14 AM #

RE: Albuquerque NM area
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/4/2002 11:28:22 AM #
Circuit City is going to carry them. I spoke with an employee there and he said they had 500 or so in the district warehouse. He said they should have them very soon. They can also take orders for their website at the store. By the way, these are the major retailers in the Albuquerque area that will carry the Clie: Best Buy (two in Albuquerque and one in Santa Fe), CompUSA, Circuit City, Ultimate Electronics, Office Max, Office Depot, and Staples. Albuquerque is bigger than you think.
RE: Albuquerque NM area
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/4/2002 11:50:50 AM #
I dounbt OfficeMax or Office Depot will carry the Clie anywhere in the USA. Neither store has offered Sony PDAs before, and I'd be surprised if they started now. Have you heard something specific, or are you just listing stores in the Albuquerque area to defend its size?

Billios, a local chain has them too. That is where I just bought mine and it was $588 for the V. Haven't been there a while but they also a a decent Mac selection.

NR70V in some stores also.

NR series and Macs

Will the NR series Clies work on Macs, with or without The Missing Sync?

Thanks,

RE: NR series and Macs

Yes with the latest version of MissingSync and PalmDesktop263. Palm Desktop 4.0 seems to have trouble even with the latest Missing Sync. They say next version, maybe 3, will be OK with PalmDesktop 4.0 and MacOS X.
Cheers.

what the heck,
the nr70 for $589? i bought the nr70v for $489. maybe they lost money on the nr70V so they are trying to make it up with the nr70? Right now the nr70v list for $599.00, so it is $10 more?
now i'm worried about my order. hmm.

Why I'll wait a couple of months...

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/4/2002 11:54:28 AM #
I saw the NR-70 at my local CompUSA, and while I agree that the screen is AWESOME, I intend to hang on to m505 and wait a while. Here's why:

1) OS5 comes out soon, with new APIs for the display. I find it doubtful that many developers will support this soft graffiti when a new one will be released soon, and will be standard.
2) With the release of OS5, Sony will likely release a replacement for the T615 and/or the NR-70/V that uses it.
3) In the event that OS5 turns out "buggy," at least in initial releases, its very existence will drive down the price of the NR-70 from its release price. So if I decide I don't want to jump into OS5 just yet, at least I can pick it up cheaper.

For now, then, I plan on using the same PDA that still fulfills my needs, and I'll occasionally pop into CompUSA to drool a while.

RE: Why I'll wait a couple of months...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/4/2002 12:08:14 PM #
Standard - picking myself up from the floor laughing and laughing all the way to ordering one anyway - the only thing that is standard is nothing. OS5 will be no different - its time will come and go - I am sure there are still lots of Palm III users out there.
RE: Why I'll wait a couple of months...
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/6/2002 2:53:51 PM #
I noticed in a restaurant yesterday, that this guy had an old palm III attached to his wallet. He's probably more concerned running his business with Windows 2000 then OS5.

NR70V OS

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/4/2002 3:01:47 PM #
From the remarks that some people are going to wait for OS5. My question is why don't you wait for OS10?. By then, the units might cost $100.00 and small as a cellular phone. I was pretty happy with the T615C, but including TAX and the extended warranty, I was paying around $500.00 at CompUSA. I returned and lost 15% restocking fee. Wow, Let's not complain about pricey. If I wanted the camera, that's another $150.00. The cost of the NR70V. Let's face it, this is an organizer.

If we want power we should turn to laptops.

As for MS, they are here to stay, Sony is putting them now in CD burners and probably in TV and stereos soon.

RE: NR70V OS
Berliner @ 5/5/2002 1:52:31 AM #
Yeah, I thought about getting the 615c as well, but now I don't want to wait any longer. The first NR70V I get my hands on is mine.... If OS5 is good, hey, maybe there's something next year. Can't wait forever.

-B.

And cycle continues.
