Comments on: Launch 'Em 3.5 Adds Support for Memory Cards

Synergy Solutions has posted on its website Launch 'Em 3.5, the latest version of its replacement for the built-in Launcher. The most important new feature is that can display applications stored on removable memory cards, like SD/MMC. It can also move files back and forth between RAM and a memory card. It is available now for $15.

Too little, too late

PR @ 5/8/2002 1:44:36 PM #
if you don't have to run programs off a card, this is the best launcher, IMO. i love all the gadgets, color support, and database handling...

however, i used to love launch 'em, as a registered user, but they got way behind the game of megalauncher, silverscreen, and launcher III as far as VFS goes. they have been promising that mmc support would be coming "soon" for almost a year now, and they stopped replying to posts on their discussion forum about it for the last six months:

and the VFS support is still somewhat slow. in my mind it was too little, too late.

I got Launcher III and it is great. I wonder what is holding the release of Launcher X.

Having used Launch'Em for a while, the lack of support (until recently) for external cards and no response for over 6 months had pushed me to Launcher III and MegaLauncher. It was a great product, but the lack of support response was frustrating and basically, they trashed their reputation by not indicating anything.
Users will only hold their breath for so long!

Likewise, with Launcher X - they sound like "vapourware" than anything else. Promises are made, but in the end, they have to compete with other launchers ... and the competing products are getting better and better!

Launcher X

Ed, do you have the inside scoop when Launcher X is going to be released. The article you referenced was written back in January.

Thanks for posting the link. I'm definitely in the "wait for Launcher X" camp -- Launcher III is just a great, solid product.

SD / MMC Only?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2002 2:55:11 PM #
"The most important new feature is that can display applications stored on removable memory cards, like SD/MMC." SD/MMC ...

Does this mean to imply it can launch apps from compact flash in a visor springboard, or am I just hoping?

Yes, it supports Visor flash memory Springboards and HandEra's Auto CF. I didn't bring it up in this article because this has been available in Launch 'Em 3.1 since August of last year.

You can also use SD/MMC reader Springboards.

The user manual is a bit obscure about Memory Card support. All references to memory cards are for SD and MMC. I tried to clarify this with Synergy Solutions and ran into a problem with the fact that this product hasn't been officially released (though it is on their website) so they aren't willing to talk about it.

Memory Stick Support?

Any experiences using this with Memory Stick media?

Um, are we forgetting Memory Stick support here?

I searched everywhere I could on the company's web site and manuals/docs and could not find the Memory Stick even MENTIONED once. If they support it, wouldn't they mention it? But if they do NOT support it, shouldn't they say so somewhere? Instead, they treat Memory Stick as if it never existed.

Do they claim generic VFS support? (If so, why specifically mention all the other types EXCEPT Memory Stick?)

PS: I sent them an e-mail with this comment/question and await their response.

" Instead, they treat Memory Stick as if it never existed."

Well, that's not so bad, actually...

Launch 'Em bug ?!

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2002 6:25:21 PM #
I've noticed that when the new option "Scan Cards" is enabled, MSImport doesn't work on my N760C. It just goes straight back to the launcher.

Does it Support SD/MMC Card?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2002 7:34:04 PM #
I've been using Launch'em 3.5 now for about a week and have had a couple of issues: Palm Game Pak card - Bubblet can not be launched from Launch'em native screen even though it identifies the various games on the screen.

Synergy support states: "Hello Richard,

Launcher III always drops out to the native Launcher on card insertion.
When "Handle Card Insertion is disabled in LE, the next time LE is started it will defualt to the native Launcher. If your application doesn't launch in the native Launcher, there might be something else going wrong."

I had been using Launcher III prior to this latest version of Launch'em (both are registered) and after stating to Synergy they were wrong - now they aren't talking to me. In order to play Bubblet on my 515, I have to launch the native Palm Applications launcher and it works fine.

Launch'em doesn't work as well as Launcher III but how long do we have to wait for Launcher X which is the "killer" app?

Welcome aboard

I have been using Launcher III for a while now. Where have you guys been?
I'll hold out for Launcher X, even if it's starting to look like vapor-ware.

Launch'Em 3

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/12/2002 7:33:18 PM #
i just downloaded this app. i really liked the 2. version but though color would be nice. when i installed this new download it killed my palm! after many hard resets i still am lost.
has anybody else had any problems with this?

Launch'Em crashed my m505

weiwang @ 11/5/2002 11:44:04 AM #
I installed Launch'em 3.5 and everytime I start it, it crashed and forced me to reset at "Reading default directory..." stage. A fatal exception window jumped out and I had to reset. I have turned off all the hacks and I have no idea what caused it. I have about 3MB freespace in the palm and a 16MB SD card.
Could anyone give me a hint?
