The one he posted a story on two days ago that generated 200 comments? The new SL-10 handheld? Yup, Ed heard of it and posted it immediately, one of the first.

Yeah I got up and did my daily routine in the morning (11:45) and got on PIC only to find that it wasn't working. I thought it was my slow 56k connection but after repeated tries, it still didn't work. (Sniff, sniff) I needed my daily hit of PIC so bad, that I looked like a deprived crackhead!

Wyncs --- Coola ripoff?

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/26/2002 2:10:12 PM #
This Wyncs thing seems on first blush a lot like Coola. I wonder if those kids at Coola have started up something new (after Coola went under) or if somebody is just ripping off their idea (and patents)?

Some ideas are so obvious that they can't be "ripped off". This is one of them.

Look out Sony, here comes DELL!

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/26/2002 4:37:32 PM #
CNET: Dell Computer is likely to enter the handheld market later this year with a device to be manufactured by a Taiwanese contract manufacturer, a Wall Street analyst said this week.

Hopefully this will be PALM, if they come out with a PPC PALM is screwed, because consumers trust DELL and it is the top selling computer brand, this could shift the market.

Lets hold our breath and hope they are wrong, Ed do you have any news on this yet?

I don't think people will buy Dell handheld as much as their computers. Everyone should notice by now that Dell computer do not compete in term of functionality or coolness or even robustness IMHO. For most people buying computer from Dell, they come down to price more than 50% IMO. And frankly I don't think Dell have that good support and services anymore.

Handheld is different from computer in the sense that the market are mostly for people who can afford more than $200 for something that might not be that useful (no offend intend here but that's the fact for most people that buy mid-range of high-end palm or PPC nowaday). I will still stick with either Sony, Palm or Handspring when come down to handheld. Most likely I will stick with Sony because they produce the best Palm handheld IMO. Dell will have to compete with other in the PPC market if indeed they go for PPC camp.

Many say Apple is BETTER than PC but who has more market share TODAY?

Dell is no match in the design department, they can't design anything, on another thought their Palm might looks just like the Acer Palm LoL

Flashback to 1996: Look out Palm, here come Compaq and H-P!! These two companies together with Microsoft, were supposed to put Palm out of business within a year. 6 years later and they, even as a combined company, are still a niche player in the handheld market. Dell will be the same. Their PDAs will have the same problems the iPaq does: poor battery life, too expensive, no applications, little developer support.

Dumb name award

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/26/2002 5:17:48 PM #
I hereby qualify "Wyncs" and "Coola" both for the Dumb Product Name Award. Not only are both names bad puns, they are hard to pronounce, forgetful and do nothing to communicate the function of the product. What is in a name? Not much here. It is up there with "General Magic" and "OXO"!

Wyncs - making the same mistake as AvantGo

Kwed @ 7/28/2002 4:51:57 AM #
While I like the idea of Wyncs a lot (Coola ripoff, anyone?), I don't approve of their methods. The way I see it Wyncs are making the exact same mistake as AvantGo; charging the people who make the service useful - the content providers. Wyncs Standard is $39 + annual fee, while Wyncs Professional will set you back $99. And those prices are just for *one* URL.

A better idea would be to make the service free to wyncs content providers and charge end-users, either a one-off price, or an annual subscription fee.

Then again, AvantGo fees has driven many a would-be content provider on the hobbyist level away. Why would Wyncs be any different?

What kind of content?

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/29/2002 5:26:44 PM #
With a name like "Eros", what kind of content are we talking about here?
