Comments on: Handspring Releases SDIO Update for Treo 90

The Treo 90 is the first model from Handspring that has an SD slot. Until now, this only supported memory cards. Handspring has released the Treo 90 Updater 1.0, which allows this handheld to use SD Input/Output (SDIO) cards. These are peripherals that plug into the handheld through the SD slot. Handspring said specifically that the Treo 90 will now be able to use the palm Bluetooth SD card for wireless networking and Margi System's Presenter-to-Go presentation tool.

Flash ROM?

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/17/2002 2:01:07 PM #
From Review:

"It doesn't have Flash ROM, which means the operating system can't be upgraded. This is no big deal because there isn't going to be anything to upgrade it to.... "

I'm confused...

Until now, Handspring has always maintained that the Treo 90 didn't have Flash ROM. However, a Handspring spokesperson confirmed yesterday that it really does and this update will reflash it.

However, this doesn't necessarily mean you can run out and get JackFlash and use it on the Treo 90. It will be up to third-party developers to update their apps to take advantage of this.

From "Wireless Treo Models Have Flash ROM" (July 15, 2002)

The Treo 90, which isn't wireless, doesn't have Flash ROM.

I'm confused too.

I find it a bit strange that when TreoCentral and Brayder Technologies figured out that the wireless Treo models actually have flash ROM and publicized this, they only talked about the Treo 180 and 270 and said nothing about the Treo 90. At the time, I assumed this meant they had tested the 90 and found that it didn't have flash ROM. I guess they didn't look at the non-wireless model at all.

I know Brayder Technologies is working on betas of JackSprat and JackFlash that support the Treo 180 and 270. Anyone tested this with the Treo 90?

Compressed Flash

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/17/2002 2:51:55 PM #
I think it has flash rom, but the rom is compressed to fit in the available space. Because the OS is compressed, it cannot be used with those flash utilities.

Great! Now just 2 more features...

Barcode scanners

Kesh @ 9/19/2002 2:14:05 AM #
On a related note, does anyone know of an SD interface for use in scanning barcodes into a PalmOS handheld? I'd like to get a Treo 90 for this, rather than sticking with a Visor Prism and CSM 150 module.

Maybe Symbol will make one. No indication yet, though.
