Hmmm this has options

Finally an app that take full acvantage of the graphics on OS5! Hope that the sound for the game matches up for the graphics. My first impression is a Diablo-like interface with that "2 1/2 D" navagation that is so popular with most networked RPGs ... taking about that ... get this with a WiFi connection and a HotSpot in a coffee shop, man that would be a nice break when there isn't anyone interesting to talk with at your local brew house.

Interesting

Hmmmm. Palmsource making games? You never know where they will turn next. I wonder if it will be bundled with any devices.

RE: Interesting
maao @ 5/15/2003 7:42:54 PM #
Read the article. Palmsource isn't making games. They're just showing a game by a partnership of two 3rd party game makers.

"This game is the first development partnership between 668 Software (which developed the classic B&W Palm game, shadow thief) and Constant Games, (developers of the Aldon's Crossing RPG)."

support 320 x 480 only ?

sirgeek @ 5/15/2003 9:53:14 PM #
how about 320 x 320 ?

RE: support 320 x 480 only ?
helf @ 5/15/2003 10:33:58 PM #
It says it takes advantage of 320x480..not that it only runs on it..Looking at the pics wouldve told you otherwise..they are 320x320.. Tony says it runs on a TT perfectly so it should run on like the z71...

Let's add 480x320 for the upcoming Helix.

The screenshots shown here are also 320x320 so I expect that will be supported.

dprice @ 5/17/2003 8:43:58 PM #
The game runs in both 320x320 and 320x480 resolutions. In 320x320, some of the UI like the inventory screen will rise up and cover a portion of the world view. On the larger screens, the inventory screen can be drawn over the virtual graphitti area.

Whoa!

tl47 @ 5/16/2003 12:22:22 AM #
Whoa! This is fantastic! Finally a game that actually even looks better than what Ziosoft has done for the PPC (e.g. AoE). A game built from ground up for the Palm/PDA!

Good job, and keep at it...

Strange... why so quiet around here. This is such a fantastic news, I expect more posts :).

WOW!!! I can't wait till this game comes out! I rarely play on my pda unless my buddy is around because the only game I have is the billiard game which is pretty cool since you can IR with others. My fiancee plays more monopoly on her pda then using all the feature it has combined! I knew I should have bought her a gameboy instead *GRIN*

Maybe it is a piece that is not finished yet, but when the character gets hacked at, the health does not go down. ??

Movies look great though.

Probably in there for testing purposes--To stay alive long enough so as to not need to start over. Easier to catch any crashes this way.

I like the screen shots, especially the hires+.

Really makes me want to get a hires+ instead of square. I mean I knew the additional screen real estate is useful but I like the almost full view with a map below it.

Good try, but...

I am REALLY glad that someone finally decided to develop a game that takes advantage of the faster processors and the new OS 5. Though, I looked at the videos and, frankly speaking, it doesn't look all that. I saw Ages of Empire on my friend's PPC and it was so nice!!! It had amazing animation, great sounds and so much more to offer! Sadly enough, the only thing that this new game has in common with it counterparts on PPC is that they are both RPG.

I really hope that someone develops a game for us (Palm users) that can compete against, or at least come head to head, with PPC games! :| *fingers crossed*

dude...The game isn't even finished..These pics are from a "beta". The graphics aren't even finished...

They should be more realistic...
TDS Computer @ 5/17/2003 12:46:43 AM #
The graphics look great. This is by far the best looking game I have seen on the Palm. If it is 1/2 as engrossing as "Aldons Crossing" it will be wonderful. But the writers need to be more realistic! The skeletons were bleeding in the videos! Everyone knows that the undead don't bleed! Especially skeletons! Back to the drawing board, guys...

The pesimist will never be left over!!!
a3 @ 5/19/2003 8:47:16 AM #
Everybody likes the game? of course not! there is always someone who does not like something. Somehow there is always someone that has seen something better on the PPC platform... I'm beginning to get tired of this. Can someone tell me that this are not by far the best SCREENSHOTS of a Palm OS RPG game. If you don't agree then you may be Ska, Blueanon or another PPC user that are looking in the wrong website.

Without the presence of pesimistic idea(s), we would all be happy with whatever we have and probably would be too optimistic to try anything new. If we all start to beat the drums on the positive attributes of this game, who will dare to point out the negatives?

No doubt, the game looks way better than anything ever seen on Palm so far, but ultimately it will have to compete against what other platforms (esp pocket pc) are offering, right? You may or may not agree with me, but a "good" game or program could easily provide leverage for one platform over another (Palm vs. PPC). AoE was really pushing me to buy a PPC, but then the simplicity of Palm OS allowed me to make the better choice.

Another thing I feel obligated to mention here is just a little fact that we all need try to find out the things that are wrong in us, in order to fix them. If we are constantly told how perfect we are, then who would try to become a better person?

So, my dear friend, it is the combination of optimism and pesimisticism that allows the "Wheel of Life" to keep rolling in the right direction. So cheer up and don't be too pesimistic about the pesimistics! ;)

RE: Good try, but...
a3 @ 5/20/2003 10:30:05 AM #
Ok, point given about the need of a pesismistic point of view in the wheel of life.

However do not forget that PPC has been in the market a little more than Palm OS5, so this game is just the beginning.

Maybe AoE is the current benchmark but IMHO this game is a great first step toward that benchmark and not a dispointment.

Don't forget that old phrase about seeing the glass half-empty vs. half-full...

Once more: lets wait and see what Helix is all about...

Yep! I am anxiously waiting for a game to arrive so that I could start loving my T|T even more!

So, where's AoE?

epall @ 5/18/2003 6:26:39 PM #
Ok, now there is a gorey role-playing game for PalmOS. Believe it or not, some of us don't like playing games with a lot of gore. So, where are the cool games like AoE, SC2K, etc. PPC has them, why don't we? Maybe the Helix will spur this development.

RE: So, where's AoE?
a3 @ 5/19/2003 8:51:58 AM #
That type of games require the faster OS5 processors, which means that their target market is reduced to only those who have bought a Palm during the last year. IMHO we will have to wait a little more until we can get there. Of course I'm holding my breath for Tapwave's Helix.

>>That type of games require the faster OS5 processors, which means that their target market is reduced to only those who have bought a Palm during the last year. IMHO we will have to wait a little more until we can get there.

If you look at the article you'll see that this game (EDGE) is only for OS 5 devices - so a RTS type game like AOE should be no different (in terms of marketability).

RE: So, where's AoE?
a3 @ 5/19/2003 10:49:14 AM #
Exactly, but that is why we should not expect a lot of tittles. It needs a lot of programming and the market is smaller. Currently, the programmers may prefer something like Bejeweled! or Vexed that may require less programming and have a wider market.

Of course, next year when OS5 devices become standard and OS6 is on its way we may be able to see more good games such as this. After all the programmers will have: Standard HiRes, 64+MB RAM and 200+Mhz processors.

As a matter of fact I'm hoping to see KKND2 Krossfire or Command & Conquer in my Clie, Tungsten or Helix. In the meantime I'll have to continue playing Bejeweled and Monopoly in my Clie T615. (=D)

Personally I'd settle for Advance Wars or some of the other good titles for the GBA.

>Believe it or not, some of us don't like playing games with a lot of gore.

From the feature list: "Password-protected parental controls allow blood/gore options to be activated or hidden."

...So it looks to me like these developers have taken your likes into account, even if you are probably in the minority when it comes to the typical tastes of the medieval hack-and-slash RPG player. ;-P
