Yeah, sounds like Apple's prior solution to iPods with dead batteries. Just buy another unit. One more reason to stay awaw from Sony.

Worse than a shock, someone probably blew one up by shorting it. Every warning sticker created was due to someone doing something that hurt them. Like... hey, that coffee is hot and now on my lap.

Is it? Then what other company offers free battery replacements? Of course, that's irrelevant when you're finding a Sony-bashing opportunity.

Don't bash Sony
mikecane @ 12/12/2003 5:09:18 PM #
Despite the fact Foo mentioned me in his excellent Zodiac review, I also must disagree with him and see his comment as simple Sony-bashing.

What about all those Palm-Size PCs that have permanent batteries, Foo? Hell, those suckers went obsolete faster than any Sony PalmOS device!

The future is replaceable batteries. Soon most companies will follow hp's lead: the 19xx, 22xx, and likewise form factor devices have not only replaceable batteries, but in most cases you can buy *extended* batteries.

palmOne, are you listening? To *anybody*? (OK, so that's *my* palmOne-bashing...)

Ben S @ 12/12/2003 8:16:32 PM #
The simple fact of the matter is that LiIon batteries are dangerous for the average person to handle. Remember, this is "average" in terms of people who need instructions on a box of toothpicks and "Caution: contents may be hot" warnings on their McDonald's coffee.

The Sony team was out of their mind to give removal instructions for the batteries in the first place. All batteries should be in replaceable external packs, with the intelligence in the pack to prevent the misadventures that can happen with a "raw" battery.

Simple Sony bashing, Mike? I find that remark disgusting, crude...and totally undeniable. I'm just venting my anger over the fact Sony still hasn't released a non-clamshell VG handheld. I mean, I had to turn to a freaking GAMING device to finally get the screen/hardware I wanted. Where is the justice?

As to your Palm-size PC comment, come on. Your comparing handhelds that have been dead for years to PDAs that are shipping today. There isn't a single PalmOS device, to my knowledge, that offers user swappable batteries. And yet most Pocket PC device shipping have this option. You're comparing apples to oranges. Good God, the only reason PalmOS devices had replaceable batteries in those days was because they used AAA batteries.

Is it the future? You would think so, but why hasn't PalmOne or Sony introduced products with user-replaceable batteries by now? Or Tapwave for that matter? Don't you find it a little odd that PPC vendors have had this feature, by design, for quite some time...while the PalmOS community still refrains from this concept? Could it be that PalmOne and Sony have us on a planned obsolescence treadmill? Do they see handhelds as "disposable", hoping to get us to buy new models every year or so?

I tend to think of it as more of PalmOne has us on a systematic timeline of features that they COULD put in now, but don't want to and are saving for the next wave. From what I've seen, Sony has no idea what they're doing, but I'm probably wrong due to strong sales of the UX50. But still, why does that thing only have 123 MHz? And 16 MB accessible RAM? And a tiny screen? And no portrait? And an ugly design? Is it just me? It has to be, it just has to. Consider it a reason HP is stealing their sales. But in any case, I'm still betting the bank on Sony coming the closest to offering us what we want. I'm always going to be shaky on PalmOne, despite evidence they're listening.

Foo: Stop making sense, dammit, you're confusing everyone!

Well, *you* went to Tapwave for that screen. Most people I think went for the gaming experience.

I think you are right about Sony: They *will* dump PalmOS as soon as Kutaragi (I hope I spelled that right!) ascends the throne. But in my upcoming Predictions (here's a sneak peek), I have it as a gradual phase-out over 2004. (Although given the junk they just released, it seems to be a surrender -- if not retreat -- already!)

palmOne I think relies on *American* designers and engineers for their devices. And they are driven by -- god help us all! -- American *marketeers* (and that moronic "User's Advisory Board" which seems to be populated by "users" who don't use their devices the way *I* do!). hp it is well known got that 19xx form factor design from an outside supplier. It was *not* their design. It was actually offered to another company (I forget which) *before* hp. And once they took it and saw it was lightning in a bottle...

At least palmOne has given us the T3. Despite the "stretch," it is an innovative design (unlike that -- hahahahahaha! -- hp 4xxx w/keyboard!).

Let's not forget that Palm has the history of an abused child (thank you Kessler, Yankowski, et al!) and it will take some time for them to sort things out -- but they have made a damned good start with their recent models.

But, yes, let's get that replaceable battery in there, dammit. And a one-piece 320x480 display (well, actually, *no* -- let's jump to a one-piece *VGA* display, ala the Toshi e8xx!). (God, let Toshiba license PalmOS! And let it be the original *GENIO* people who do it -- a PalmOS 6 device in the GENIO e550g design -- with better buttons -- and a 4" VGA screen, 128 or even 256MB RAM, would be a K.I.L.L.E.R. device!!)

RE: In other words
JonathanChoo @ 12/13/2003 12:36:05 PM #
Why VGA??? VGA is ugly!? Palmone should take it all the way to 480x960 pixel doubling on the current 320x480 system. Widescreen is much better than VGA's 4:3 ratio! Watching videos on the T3 feels more natural because of the widescreen ratio.

Generic Casio > Psion 5/StarTac > Vx > m505 > Sony N770C > Sony T625C/Ericsson T39m > Sony NR70V > Toshiba e310 > Tungsten T/Ericsson T68m > HP h2210 > Tungsten T3/Ericsson T610

>>>Why VGA??? VGA is ugly!? Palmone should take it all the way to 480x960 pixel doubling on the current 320x480 system.

PalmOS 6 will be resolution-independent. I'll settle for VGA as a first step. And since that will probably be available far sooner than 480x960 -- guess what? You'll settle for it too!

>> Well, *you* went to Tapwave for that screen. Most people I think went for the gaming experience.

Actually my Zodiac is boxed up ready to be shipped back to Tapwave on Monday. I LOVE the product, but it just isn't quite the right handheld for me. As I sit here pondering my next PalmOS purchase, I can't find a single device that appeals to me. The T3 would have been a killer handheld, were it not for that cursed slider, and MY GOD the size! Have you seen the T3 when extended? It's freakin huge! No thank you.

I did finally break down and order an iPaq 1945 to replace my Dell Axim Pocket brick. Too bad neither PalmOne nor Sony have come up with a full VG screen handheld in this form factor. :-(

>> I think you are right about Sony: They *will* dump PalmOS as soon as Kutaragi (I hope I spelled that right!) ascends the throne. I still stand by my prediction, despite what Sony's PR man said previously. But I agree with your assertion as well. In fact, I don't expect the Clie line will reach EOL status until PSP hits the market (can't wait for that). Wouldn't it be tragic irony though if Sony releases the PERFECT kick ass Clie we've all been waiting for...just as they are about to kill the platform? *sigh*

>> palmOne I think relies on *American* designers and engineers for their devices. I really hate to say this, but right now the iPaq 19xx line is one of the few handheld designs I see as practical for my daily use. I was ranting about this topic several weeks ago on my site. It seems like PDA vendors are designing handhelds to look captivating on store shelves without giving much thought to how people actually use, and carry, these devices. The Tungsten E is the perfect example. The damn this is coated is some cheap faux metal chrome paint? Yes, I know it's the hottest selling item, but I don't want my PDA covered in greasy fingerprints, thank you very much. At least it has a flip cover though, that's a start. I'll give PalmOne props for that.

I just want a small form factor with VG screen (or retractable keyboard ala Zaurus), metal case, flip cover, and some form of wireless connectivity (preferably WiFi)...at a reasonable price ($399 or less would be acceptable). The closest PalmOne has come up with so far is FrankenTungsten (T3), which I don't very much care for.

1) Even if Sony comes out with The Killer CLIE -- it'll still require MStick!

2) Yo, Foo! The **$600** Toshi e8xx is likewise a fingerprint.smudge magnet. And it's an ugly blue too!

I like the hp 4xxx (one with no kb and BT/WF built-in), except for that stylus.

But having seen VGA on that e8xx. You have *got* to see VGA on it -- running Deez's hack, of course, for full access to the OS and apps in VGA.

Agreed.
Changing a PDA battery is not brain surgery.

It's rocket science! :D

Right on mikecane!

renurb @ 12/12/2003 8:29:11 PM #
I agree 100%. Replacable batteries should be standard on all models, all brands.

It's obserd to think that every PDA user is going to be at home next to his/her charging cradle every night.

My Sonly SL10 uses two AAA batteries. I have two sets of rechargable nimh batteries. When one set gets low, I put the new set in and charge the old set. If I go on a trip, I take the spares with me. Oh, and if I forget the spares, I go to the nearest convenience store and buy some cheap alkaline AAA's to get me by till I can get back home.

How can anyone consider battery "built-in's" to be a better idea? I'm curious... Anyone??

Blessed are they who don't,
For they shall not,
Nor will they.

RE: Right on mikecane!
Strider_mt2k @ 12/13/2003 7:15:59 AM #
I dunno, I really like not having to keep track off all the batteries. I just carry a portable charger.

I think folks with built-in batteries tend to know how their power usage is, and accessorize to meet their needs.

I do agree that a removable battery scheme should have been standard from the start, be it a standard or specific battery type. It would affect the form factor, but we'd be used to it by now!!! ;)

Never too late to start, handheld makers!

With my mono CLIE S320, I just had to go buy a battery extender off ebay for it. And that's for a *mono* device. That's how much I use it. Give me a replaceable battery. I don't care if I have to carry 3 spares strapped to my belt!

Hell, Foo, if I upgrade, it'd end my lust!

Where's my screwdriver and metal pick set???

Strider_mt2k @ 12/13/2003 7:30:04 AM #
Thanks, Sony.

By calling attention to it, I had to open up my SJ33 out of sheer curiosity, just to see what all the fuss is about.

Nothing that scary going on inside mine. Looks like a very easy process to replace the battery.

They must have had a run of unusually stupid people trying to swap batteries.

No, it's just better to warn and be safe. When lots of people are doing a thing that *could* be unsafe, then it's prudent (legally and morally) for the company to warn of potential dangers that it's aware of, but that others might not be.

Of course, if you swallow the battery after you remove it, you could always call the National Battery Ingestion Hotline...

Copied from Rayovac MSDS Safety Information for a battery:

Effects of Exposure: NONE. INGESTION OF A BATTERY CAN BE HARMFUL. CALL THE
NATIONAL BATTERY INGESTION HOTLINE (202-625-3333) COLLECT, DAY OR NIGHT, FOR
ADVICE AND FOLLOW UP.

Maybe my wish for Toshi to do PalmOS is ill-founded. Unless they make sure it has a removable battery.
