Shareholders

Palm executives continue to enrich themselves as Palm Shareholders continue to get screwed.

Gekko,
As your namesake once eloquently said "Never get emotional about stocks".

Wonder if this is why Palm has nothing to show this year except the low-end stuff -- could there be a management 'reorganization' and near-term projects placed on hold?

I wonder if PalmOne is tempted to simply become a smartphone company with low-end garbage PDAs at dirt cheap prices?

Perhaps a few more ivory back scratchers?

Will Palm also be giving him a $10,000,000 (TEN MILLION!!!!!!) stock bonus like David Nagel was given?

Wonder how much of his stock Nagel has already sold before PalmSource's current tumble?

Ed deserves this promo!!!

dbmoyers2 @ 6/16/2004 8:41:47 PM #
Ed deserves this promo. He has been around since the beginning. Captured the Sprint carrier account that launched the Treo. Marketing wiz that will be a huge advantage for palmone as they move into the future with additional smartphone entries. He knows how to compete with the likes of bigger competitors such as Nokia and Samsung. Good complement to Bradley. Both of these guys are on the firing line everyday, and they keep proving the critics wrong...Keep up the good work fellows, love that Treo 600.

I agree. Good post. Thanks!

I agree. Great performance ought to be rewarded.

But bad work should not be tolerated. I hope Mr Colligan can get to the bottom of who made the stupid decision to omit the "show only due" function from the palmOne Tasks app. (Deleting this filter has made it impossible to view Task categories without being inundated with items which can be left for another day.) Better still, please get them to write a patch to put that function back where it belongs.

Download ToDo PLUS and stop expecting Palm to listen to you.

Well, I have tried ToDo+. It's a great little program. It has all the features you could possibly want, but the interface just gets to me after a day or two - it's not quite right - I just don't like the colour icons, I guess.

I have also tried DateBk5, ShadowPlan, Bonsai, BrainForest, ThoughtManager & LifeBalance. Each of them is remarkable in its own way. However I much prefer the raw simplicity of the palmone Tasks appliction. (I steadfastly refuse to read manuals, and proud of it!)

I have not yet tried BeyondContacts and Ketsuite. Their claim to fame seems to be that they are similar to M$ Outlook. Frankly, as a PIM, M$ Outlook is a dog, so I anything that emulates it is out of the question as far as I am concerned.

There are a couple of intruiging freeware apps out there too - Projects (by Peter Novotnik), Progects (an outliner) and KSToDo. Each of them is good, but Tasks works better for me.

I have even hacked a copy of To Do List from my T2 and copied over to my TE (thank you nosleep software for the Filez filemanager - it's a wonder). It works just fine, but there are no repeat functions or alarms like in Tasks.

So, no matter what I have tried, I keeping going back to Tasks, but I still wish palmOne would put the "show only due" function back in there.

Just humour me on this, OK? I am a customer, ergo I am always right!!! ;^)

As for palmOne not listening to customer feedback, I don't think that is always true. Applications like Calender, Contacts, Tasks and Memos contain improvements which reflect what we have asked for. palmOne may be slow, but they do respond to feedback (eventually).

Tasks/To Do List
Gekko @ 6/20/2004 9:02:05 PM #
Is it just me or does anyone else NOT use Tasks/To Do List? I put all of my "Tasks/To Do's" in Calendar/Datebook. This way, it one less PIM app to look at and also I'm more inclined to do it if I see it in Calendar/Datebook.

Palm's Future - a timeline

;-(( @ 6/16/2004 10:47:32 PM #
3rd quarter, 2004 - $20 million operating loss announced. 80 workers laid off. David Nagel cashes in his remaining PalmSource stock as value dips below $10, sparking investor panic. PPC passes PalmOS in market share for quarter for the first time ever.

August, 2004 - new Treo (900) released. Better screen, better camera, 0.75 ounce lighter. Device picked up by most major carriers + Treo begins to account for 50% of Palm's profits.

September, 2004 - Tungsten T4 and Tungsten X (BT + 802.11b + 128 MB RAM + keyboard) released. Tungsten 4 feels like it was construted of aluminum foil.

October, 2004 - Treo 900 sales slump as new Sony Ericsson smartphone announced.

4th quarter, 2004 - After $30 million loss, Palm announces scaling back PDAs to concentrate on smartphones. Investor panic drives shares below $5.

Lo, it will come to pass, for these things have been written.

Lo, it is written...

as fiction.

Your timeline leaves out Zire, which show how much you know about most of the customers who actually buy the things.

RE: Palm's Future - a timeline
;-o @ 6/17/2004 5:36:35 AM #
It looks like they're suggesting the Zire won't be updated for the rest of the year. Makes sense. By the way total sales means very little. What matters is margins and with Zire, marging are pretty narrow. Palm needed Treo because the profits are so high (over $100/phone).

Now, I'm wondering... if those things never happen, will you still say that you're right? (like you use to do :)

The Palm SD Bluetooth drivers: hide the truth?
;-(( @ 6/17/2004 9:39:11 PM #
Wow. Ryan must be watching here 24/7. Managed to hide the truth about Palm's little scam pretty quickly. Shame!

It's time users demaded more of Palm.

Congratulations, Ed Colligan!

mikecane @ 6/17/2004 8:25:58 AM #
I had the pleasure of meeting him at the NYC Treo launch event.

This is the man whose mantra was "Delight the customer!" -- and which led to the eventual fantastic PalmOS apps.

There might be hope for palmOne now!

RE: Congratulations, Ed Colligan!
Patrick @ 6/17/2004 6:00:57 PM #
Delighting the customer should include after sales support as much as the design of the hardware and software itself.

Let's hope that Mr. Colligan puts the out-of-control Palm support fiasco high on his list of priorities.

It isn't about to change any time soon.

"Delight the customer!"?

hey MikeCon - My mantra is "Talk is cheap."

RE: Congratulations, Ed Colligan!
mikecane @ 6/18/2004 10:48:36 AM #
Gekko: Your talk IS cheap. I don't believe you ever had a PalmOS device. You're just one of those sad little PPC trolls whose device is such a letdown that you have loads of time to scrawl on *PalmOS* sites. I know that PPC sites wouldn't even have your ilk. You are a *negative* ad for PPC ownership.

The way customer support being done abroad is a valid problem, and something that needs to be addressed. The people I spoke with the last few times are probably better educated than I, but did not know enough english to communicate effectively. The latest episode was on the phone with palmOne support last night. My device needs to be exchanged and I specificially requested an advance exchange. The rep said there was a $40 charge, which I was already expecting, but they did not take my credit card number, and said they were sending me an email with instructions. Later, I receive an email saying to print out the email and wrap it around the handheld with a rubber band, then mail it in.

Replying to the email to make them aware of the advance exchange error, I get a response saying "In order for us to deal efficiently with your enquiry, please visit our e-service offering at www.palmone.com/us/support".

Going online and filling the forms out all over, I get another automated response saying I should expect a response within 12 hours.

I was a Help Desk lead for 15,000 customers before being promoted, and I know things should work better than this.

Hey President Ed Colligan: where's the SD Bluetooth drivers?

;-(( @ 6/17/2004 9:45:25 PM #
How about sending your customers a signal that Palm cares. How about releasing the drivers? What's that? No? Why not? Could it be because you just don't give a ****? (self-edited)

Ed, please stop hogging the 802.11 drivers...

pkuhns @ 6/18/2004 11:56:15 AM #
It seems Palm is getting less "open" every day. Sandisk couldn't release a driver for their 802.11 SD card because Palm wouldn't help them. Not sure if its Palmsource that wouldn't help or PalmOne.

Regardless, it's pretty clear that Palm is hogging peripheral technology so that they can reap the benefit$ of selling Palm-branded peripherals. This is the antithesis of the Palm history and culture. Palm needs to HELP their hardware partners, not HURT them. Handspring kinda knew that, even though their springboard sucked a$$.
