Surely slow...

brum @ 4/15/2009 4:30:03 PM # Q
Is it just me or is class 2 ridiculously slow?

I'm running a Sandisk 8GB Class 4 and it takes a good 15-20 seconds to load the music when accessing the library in pocket tunes.

Depends on the device, to be quite honest. I have a class 2 8gb Transcend SDHC and it captures XGA video from my digicam with no problems. It also works fine in all my PC card drives. Now, my class 6 cards are naturally faster but I definitely see better results with, say, a Class 2 card on a PC/digicam than a Class 4 on a Palm device.

I believe all Palm OS devices use a 1-bit SD bus, so reading and especially writing data to a flash card is going to be pretty slow, regardless of the card's speed rating. So the inherent limitations of Palm's hardware is going to have performance falling way short of any SDHC card's speed ratings, IIRC.

Also, keep in mind that the Palm OS has major issues with volumes larger than 4GB, so that, a slow CPU & the usual NVFS quirks could be other culprits for poor performance.

I have a DaneElec 8gb class 4 card in my TX (with Grinberg's driver). It is fine on the read and WAY slow on the write. I hate having to wait for my auto-backup's to finish before I can use the device again. Maybe Kris is right and the problem is more on the Palm hardware end of thing, but I don't think I'd get another SD card less than a class 6 again.

Hey Palm! Where's my PDA with Wifi and phone capabilities?

Ron;

Pop that card in a PC or a digicam and see how it performs relative to the Palm. In general, slow SD cards perform most slowly on Palm devices vs. other devices......and fast SD cards are still slower on Palm devices than on other types of hardware.

My usual test is recording video w/ audio to a card. If it can record XGA @ 15fps or VGA @ 30fps with no stutters or dropped frames, then it's fine in my book. Also, not all "Class X" cards are created equal. I have an el-cheapo Kingston Class 6 that's a good bit slower than a Sandisk Extreme III Class 6, for example.

If only...

Dammit, Palm. I love Pre. I want the Pre. But if you don't put an SD slot in Pre 2, I'll... I'll...

...well, I'll probably just bitch about it on the Internet. But I'll be very shrill. Nobody wants that.

Thanks for the insightful info above!

I'm just hanging out for the day, they've got to have a few cards (pun not intended) up their sleeve. I'm just hoping they will come out with "well you guys said you wanted it, so here you go.", I know it's hopeless but there's still a glimmer. They are keeping such a (relatively) tight ship.

No, you are right. Nobody wants that.

I know this won't come as a huge surprise, but Palm is not listening to you or me about what hardware to build for us. If they had listened to me, I'd have "almost" the equivalent hardware as the iPhone running the latest version of Garnet. (And it would definitely have a SD slot as well.)

...but nobody gets it right the first time

I'm pretending this is actually on topic. Blackberry's CEO's say that nobody gets it right the first time. Ok, but they're talking about their own equipment.
