Comments on: Treo Pro Now Available for Pre-Order

Treo Pro Pre-OrderPalm's US based online store is now accepting pre-orders for the Treo Pro smartphone. As expected, the unlocked GSM version is selling for $549.00. The Pro is available in Obsidian Black and the site currently states orders "usually ship" in 2 - 3 weeks. Palm is also offering free shipping on all orders from the Palm Store.

Announced in late August, the Treo Pro is Palm's first radically redesigned Treo in a number of years. The feature packed Windows Mobile powered smartphone sports a sleek and glossy design, in a much slimmer form factor. For more details you can read our in-depth Treo Pro review and watch the initial unboxing video.

In Apple news today...

hkklife @ 9/9/2008 11:22:28 AM # Q
Boy, what a non-event today's Apple gig was, huh? Apple's "refreshed" lineup is looking about as sickly as Jobs himself (I OF COURSE wish him no ill will but his increasingly frail appearance is starting to worry me!)

The Classic goes DOWN in capacity, the Nano becomes even more hideous, and the Touch hardly budges in price and doesn't get a 64gig model and still no cut'n paste. Apple is taking the classic Palm route of going backwards spec-wise. And Apple-branded earphones? Oh, please! I was really hoping for the Nano to morph into a Touch Nano/Touch Air with a little touchscreen and no silly scroll wheel.

Maybe there's still a slim window of opportunity for Rubinstein & Palm to sneak in there with a slick Nova device and pull off an upset?!?! iTunes under Windows is the bane of my existence like the Nokia 770 Tablet was to Mike Cane!

Microsoft missed the opportunity to hit back hard with a new Zune. Apple's gotten fat & complacent. Everyone else has abandoned high-capacity HD-based players to piddle around with flash storage players. Archos' hardware looks good but their software is increasingly half-baked.

Someone come out with something approximately the size of a TX with a 320x480 or better LCD and (at least) a 160GB HDD and target the mobile video junkies!!

The mobile video junkies, apparently, weren't buying the 160GB iPod. The reason Jobs gave for cutting it was the fat one wasn't selling as well.

I don't use my 160GB Classic for video. I use it for file storage and high-bitrate music.

Of course the video junkies weren't buying the Classic, not with that pitiful little screen. Apple's only true high-capacity iPod is saddled with the worst performance and screen. And Apple's largest screen device skimps out on storage space and $/mb value.

Apple needed/needs a "fattie" Touch.....a 160gb+ HD + 320x480 touchscreen + ginormous battery capacity = mobile video perfection (in an Apple product, at least). Of course, that makes too much sense....

>>>Apple is taking the classic Palm route of going backwards spec-wise.

There is some similarity. But the Fall is now over. New MacBooks. And I still maintain iPod Touchbook for October:

Sony has apparently moved up their new Reader from November to October (although Oct might have been the announce date all along with Nov *availability*).

Touch

JackG @ 9/9/2008 11:32:47 AM # Q
I've owned an iPod Touch since July of this year. I really enjoy the device, but when I think of it as a replacement phone for my Treo (if I had the full iPhone) I shudder. The apps updating is a totally frustrating and buggy process, sometimes requiring multiple deletes of the up datable app before finally getting it to install correctly. Furthermore, the onscreen keyboard is okay at best, and for me will never replace a nicely designed hardware keyboard. I'd much prefer my 800w's keyboard over the iPod Touch. Heck, I'd take my Centro's keyboard over the onscreen style for that matter.

I'm with you though, it would sure be great to see Palm sneak in a Nova device now. Apple is resting on its laurels and so they could use a wake up punch.

I also own a Zune, and while it has better sound for its music than the Touch, the screen is nowhere near as beautiful, and the battery life is abysmal in comparison. Microsoft sure could have done something more spectacular for the Zune lineup for the coming holidays. Maybe they can still pull a rabbit out of the hat too.

Interesting comments. Don't get me wrong, I love the sleekness/build quality/screen/browser of the iPhone/Touch, but it's far too much of a walled garden for my tastes and iTunes under Windows is an exercise in frustration.

WinMob is still too inherently clunky and a kludge, though there's no doubting it's got some top notch hardware nowadays (SE Xperia X1, though I'd kill for a CDMA version).

The BB platform has made enormous strides in the past 2 years but I still am too used to a touchscreen to deal with that silly little trackball and RIM's occasional service outages.

No, a motivated/inspired/aggressive Palm would really be the ticket, especially with everything hot seemingly delayed lately and/or subject to the silly carrier exclusivity deals (Xperia X1, Touch Diamond CDMA, BB Bold, Thunder/9500, Kickstart)

Pilot 1000->Pilot 5000->PalmPilot Pro->IIIe->Vx->m505->T|T->T|T2->T|C->T|T3->T|T5->Zodiac 2->TX->Verizon Treo 700P->Verizon Treo 755p

You are correct in the iTunes/Windows link. I gave up too and sync solely with my Mac Mini. I'm computer ambidextrous I suppose since I use a Mac and a Vista laptop. lol.

I'm hoping since Palm recently released two new (albeit WinMo) devices that it is a positive sign that we will still see Nova. I personally like the many choices we have as it means there is bound to be something out there to please most everyone. I guess its cross-our-fingers time!

3rd'ed about iTunes/Windows... iPhone/iTouch contact/calendar integration with OSX is so much smoother than it is on Windows. I hate Outlook, and my company doesn't use it.

I think the iPhone is a not-so-stealth effort to get people to switch to OSX on their desktops.

I mean... why would Steve Jobs want iTunes to work *BETTER* on Windows than it does on OSX???

Anybody buying this?

Gekko @ 9/9/2008 8:07:40 PM # Q

i guess only for AT&T customers in America given SIM card?

why no PalmOS version? Overkill hardware for FrankenGarnet? Or is FrankenGarnet dead and we're all just waiting for Nova?

RE: Anybody buying this?
hkklife @ 9/10/2008 8:30:11 AM # Q
There's supposedly a CDMA Treo Pro in the works but so far we haven't seen anything other than (I believe) that Digitimes report about it. No actual FCC or carrier roadmap leaks etc.

Why no PalmOS version? Take your pick from a variety of reasons.

I personally feel we've seen the final Garnet device (the currrent Centros) but if we DO see another OS 5.x device ever from Palm, it'll be a mildly refreshed Centro

But yeah, the Treo line is all WinMob from here on pretty much. Though Palm COULD get many of the Pro's improvements in on a Garnet device (microUSB, high-capacity battery + formfactor, flush touchscreen, fast CPU, 3.5mm stereo headphone jack), it'd still end up being GPS-less, wi-fi-less Garnet device.

Probably the best we can hope for is a Centro 2 running Garnet early in '09 with a microUSB port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the a slightly higher capacity battery standard.

It will work with T-Mobile in the US as well. Though they do not offer 3G data.

Now, an OS 6.x device - ah, there's the ticket!

Well, Ed DID say a few months back that there would be future Garnet devices forthcoming....but, y'know, "future Garnet devices" can be quite easily massaged into the truth by saying that "The Centro will remain in production for another 6 months and new colors will keep coming out".

It will so happen.... they haven't innovated a banana yellow centro yet.

Yep and yep. Palm had negotiated a final settlement with me a few years ago for the Flipper. I demanded 3.5mm audio on the final product and the contract talks broke down right there. A tragedy no doubt. :-D

Also, see this ...
http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/09/8220handsonctia.jpg

In related OT issues. Anyone round' here been begging for a little more screen real estate? Palm phased (and is phasing) out all it's HVGAs. Apple opened the floodgates and here comes the rest.

Here it comes #1 ...

Here it comes #2 ...
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/09/10/blackberry-thunder-caught-on-video/

... Palm nowhere in sight, still trying to figure out how to shrink the Centro screen down 20% and make the phone fatter.

Gekko,
I think you're on it. FrankyG is finished. Never to see the light of day in anything newer than another Centro paint scheme or carrier OEM distro. We are literally witnessing the much prophesied end of Palm OS as we knew it. we've finally (thank God!) run outta nails. The coffin is tightly shut!

Nova is the only hope for us remaining Kool-Aid drinkers. The only problem is that we actually have no idea what it is that we hope for. Even if we knew, it still requires Palm Inc to actually bring it to fruition. Dark times indeed.

As they say, "It's always darkest right before it goes pitch black." :-/

RE: Anybody buying this?
AdamaDBrown @ 9/11/2008 11:15:55 PM # Q
hkk, I don't think there's any technical reason that a Garnet based Treo Pro couldn't have GPS. After all, it's not a communications method like WiFi is. Of course, you would still have to lose the WiFi, and make it CDMA only lest you lose 3G too, making it much less of a direct Treo Pro equivalent.

I agree with LF: Although Palm's been doing better as far as hardware goes, particularly with the Pro, long term they're going to be ground down if they don't have something else going for them. SE and Samsung both have other businesses that sustain them, and HTC has their OEM work.
