Comments on: New Treo Pro and Treo 800w Accessories Revealed

Last week's Treo Pro announcement focused primarily on Palm's latest handset offering, with little if any attention paid to the usual arsenal of accessories traditionally announced alongside any new Palm device. With Palm's apparent renewed interest and attention to Windows Mobile coming on the heels of their recent duo of high-end WM 6.1-powered Treos, several new accessories have been announced and/or just released.

Palm's ChannelSource reseller portal has posted a substantial bit of information on several new accessory SKUs for not only the brand-new Treo Pro but the recent Treo 800w as well.

800w Audio Adapter Monster?

LiveFaith @ 8/27/2008 2:14:32 PM # Q
Well Palm? Is one of those 800w SKUs related to the much needed 800w audio adapter monstrosity? You guys know ... the one that converts a single micro USB into another micro usb with a 3.5mm audio dongle hanging off the side! That's what it will take to listen to MP3s while charging the phone. The scenario that many use a high % of the time.

I still stand amazed that a focus group of people somewhere at sometime in this company actually left a meeting in agreement that an MP3 playing phone would actually ship with nothing more than 1 micro USB port. Then a month later the GSM / WM version that is nearly identical in specs gets the obvious that my 13 year old could figure out. A 3.5mm + micro USB. The MUSB only on the 800w ranks right up there with

* No wifi on the T5
* OS4 on the TW
* Mono audio on the TC
* No VR / LED on T5/TX
* No Wifi on POS treos ever

Someone really needs to write a book about this company for the past 4 years. A mystery thriller / Whodunnit no doubt.

Nice find Kris. Hopefully the Pro is a sign of things to come.

Thanks, Pat. You know it's a monumental task to dig up information on Palm's stuff at times, but someone's gotta do it!

I think one of those 800w adapters is a sort of "splitter" that splits the single microUSB port into two microUSB ports. So you can charge it via one and have an audio device (headset/headphones) connected to the other. Also, the earlier 800w rumors said that it was going to probably include a microUSB->3.5mm headphone adapter in the box so I guess they nixed that at the 11th hour. Really, if the CDMA Pro rumors are correct, I see 800w sales going into the toilet. Verizon really could make a nice smartphone push later this year and on into '09 if they have the BB Thunder and the CDMA Trep Pro in their lineup.

Remember, the 800w has been rumored since, what, May of 2007? I have a feeling the 800w was in the works for a looong time and kept getting delayed due to any number of reasons (Rubinstein making tweaks? Too many unsold 700wx's still in the channel? Waiting on MS to finish WM 6.1? Adding GPS & wi-fi? We'll never know!)

I think that the 850/Pro was designed (start to finish) in MUCH shorter time than the 800w, so more time for Rubinstein to work his magic and beef up the 800w's shortcomings (screen brightness, battery capacity, 3.5mm jack, CPU speed, styling/size etc).

To add to your list:

-No backlight on the original Pilot
-No audio-out hardware or OS capability (unlike the Sony OS4 Clies with a separate DSP) on the m500 line
-Microdrive, horrible OS, and waaay too little physical RAM in the LifeDrive
-No device with a resolution higher than 320x320 in the past THREE years from Palm
-Everything about the 700p
-The Treo 650's initial NVFS implementation that gave it less usable memory than the previous 600

Yeah you should see how fast it can download entire Blu-Ray movies to your Treo with that! Like 45 seconds. :-D

Someone @ Palm should be FLOGGED for not coming up with this one!

http://blog.laptopmag.com/a-sneak-peek-at-the-e-mail-only-peek

Palm could easily have one-upped this kind of gadget by offering (basically) a cut-down version of the Centro for $100ish at retail.

Lose the voice functionality, most of the software bundle, Bluetooth, removable battery and possibly the microSD slot to keep costs down.
Sell it as a fully-functional PDA (replacing both the Z22 & T|E2) with a QWERTY keyboard for $100-$120.

Same ol' Garnet, same ol' PIM apps, Palm Desktop etc. But, the catch would be if the user desires it, a dead-simple "wireless web & e-mail" package for $10-$15/month can be purchaed (ideally Sprint ala Amazon's Kindle and could be activated on the device itself). Disable any kind of tethering, of course, but ensure that the unit is 100% functional without a data plan (perhaps "hide" the e-mail/web apps on the launcher if there's no data plan on the device?)

This kind of contract-free data-only wireless functionality that can be "flipped" when/if desired is perfectably do-able under the limitations of Garnet and would represent real out-of-the-box thinking by both Palm and the carriers. And everything's been miniaturized to a point nowadays that you don't walk around with a huge external antenna lump ala Palm VII/i705/Treo 6x0/700.

A "Palm Peek PDA" would be a win-win for erveryone: Palm gets to keep some kind of PDA-style device around to sell at retail & keep their name in the spotlight, the shelf life/usefulness of Garnet is extended just a bit longer AND it'd get one of the carriers one more revenue source from someone who might otherwise never sign a 2yr contract and/or carry a smartphone.

The overhyped MVNO fad might've died on the vine but I think there's a real market for cheap, contract-less portable wireless devices where the wireless functionality is limited but cheap (ala Peek) or embedded within the cost of content purchases or the device's purchas price (Kindle). Palm could-and SHOULD have (IMO)-seen this coming and repositioned themselves to jump on it. Their history of cheap-but-functional PDAs and their cozy carrier relationships (especially to Sprint, who themselves are in need of every $ possible) would have made a Palm Peek a natural.

I say FAIL. I considered it carefully and it's still FAIL.

The next in line after "Internet Appliances," Audrey, and Microsoft Bob.

If by some chance it gains traction? Ghettoberry.

They how do you explain the (presumably-I've yet to ever see on live) runaway success of Kindle?? One of the most hideously styled, ungainly pieces of electronics ever! The Peek looks like an iPhone in comparison with the Kindle (IMO).

the peek, audrey, fooleo, audrey, et al were/are all REDUNDANT AND EXTRANEOUS AND NOT TRULY INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS. simply put, another device already existed that did the job BETTER.

there is nothing currently better than the kindle for what it does at this time.

add this to the list of my PIC favorite quotes -

Kindle allows people to do eBooks without a computer. Doing eBooks with a computer is not an easy process; many is the blog entry I've read about the weaknesses of Sony Reader's desktop connection abilities. It wasn't even an easy process with my former PDAs. I got tired of syncing for MobiPocket feeds mighty quick, for example.

Kindle's "runaway" success is an illusion. Intelligent people greatly doubt the bloated numbers TechCrunch flung around. If it was that big, Bezos would be yelling on street corners in glee.

All that said, there is a new Kindle model due which could give them a tipping point, depending on what it is like and price. They have the PR advantage over Sony.

But don't count out Apple just yet (despite their ban of yesterday).
