Comments on: Enfora Announces Treo 600 WiFi Sled

Enfora has announced the development of a new WiFi sled accessory for palmOne's Treo 600. It will allow Treo 600 users to have high-speed Wi-Fi access to the Internet while simultaneously sending and receiving GSM/GPRS or CDMA phone calls and SMS messages.

What about the Treo 650?

It's good that they're making one for the Treo 600, but what about the Treo 650?

It'd be great that, if in a real pinch, you could actually trickle your Treo from the sled's internal battery (like a glorified Power to Go sled) but that's likely wishful thinking.

I presume that this has been in the works for some time and will be welcomed by more than a few Treo 600 users. With the newly-released Treo 650 and its unique Athena connector, there likely hasn't been enough time to cobble something similar together for the 650. Also, keep in mind that the 650 seems to be fairly hackable in regards to SDIO wi-fi so that might be the plan for the future for that particular model.

They'll probably come out with drivers for it for one of the Palm Wi-Fi cards soon.

I thought that I read somewhere that the version for the 650 would be coming out about a month later than the 600 version, (March?)

You are right. The Enfora rep at CES stated to me that the 600 sled comes in Feb, with the 650 sled to come 30 days (his words) later.

Doubtful of simultaneous wi-fi and phone use

DJS_TX @ 1/13/2005 8:37:55 AM # Q
Unless they did some neat tricks with the driver software, it won't work. I figured out how to connect my digitraveler GPS to the treo and it worked fine until I received a call. When I finished the call and returned to the GPS program it was unable to see the GPS anymore until I soft reset.

The problem was how the incoming call would interrupt the current program I think. The GPS software would start and it would "lock" the serial port in software so no other program could use it. It would normally "unlock" the port when you exited the program. However an incoming call would interrupt the program without letting it unlock the port. So when you returned to the GPS software it would complain that the port was already in use by another program.

It's not just the physical ports either, another user described the exact same behavior on his 650 with a bluetooth GPS.

when will an athena connector wifi sled come out?

Frenchie @ 1/13/2005 1:10:23 PM # Q
lets hope that enfora can make an Athena Connector slid for the new TE2, Treo 650,and T5. If they did that then palmone's fan base would gain a lot more people

The world will end in 2006. Just as it was predicted in the bible along with the release of Microsoft Longhorn.... :p
