Once they kick out the PalmOS PIMs on mLinux for "featurephones" to licensees and potential licensees, everyone will wish they had owned stock... They have a huge future -- and it's no longer dependent on PDAs. This means we are no longer at the head of the line. RE: Ok who will be first toAdamaDBrown @ 3/31/2005 11:34:51 PM #
You guys act like there's something holy about the Palm OS PIM apps. The fact is that any other company could come up with an equally effective PIM suite. The 'Zen of Palm' isn't an absolute or exclusive guarantee of success. I still don't see any evidence that PalmSource's talk about 'feature phones' and PalmLinux is anything more than smoke and mirrors to deflect attention from the Cobalt fiasco and the swiftly dwindling number of licensees. RE: Ok who will be first to
>>>The fact is that any other company could come up with an equally effective PIM suite. Hey, it's been YEARS since they've come out. Where are the competitors? It's already been established that you know zip about ID. Care to make it 2 for 2 in the Stupid Department? RE: Ok who will be first to
While I agree with Adama that anyone could do it. The fact remains that anyone hasnt. PS has done a good job, and added some tweaks here and there after the licensees experimented. Would it be nice to see MS start from a simple form rather than minaturize the OL form, sure. Will it happen by them or another is another story. palmOnLinux is a distraction from Cobalt. Probably. sad too, I like Cobalt and think that it would have been great, even in its raw 6.0 release mode to have licensees play with. Granted, it would have come out incredibly customized, but it would have been great to see what companies would do. I think that with POL that you will see the same thing that happened to Apple. The box you can think outside of can only go so far before you have to reign it in. Cobalt may have just been too far from the established standards for anyone to want to go. So they brought it in hoping to make it close to their idea. Hope it works for their sake. RE: Ok who will be first to
twizza -- ANYONE? Puh-leeze. You denigrate the amount of work it took to make it *look* simple. Have you ever read "Piloting Palm"? Go do so. RE: Ok who will be first to
I am a webdesigner and know first hand what it means to make things simple (aka my super complex website); I also know how hard it is not to copy what works. Thats why it hasnt been done, but given the effort, it could be. antoinerjwright.com RE: Ok who will be first to
The key word there is *COPY*. And that would be infringement of varying copyrights. It *can't* be done. That simplicity couldn't even be done with companies that started from *scratch*. All of you dismiss Haitani's hard work too lightly. A shame. RE: Ok who will be first toAdamaDBrown @ 4/1/2005 9:39:00 PM #
Mike, take a poll on how many people agree with your twisted views of "industrial design." You can copyright programs, images, and even techniques to a limited extent, but you can't copyright ease of use. If somebody produced an equally simple PIM app without using any Palm images, or deliberately ripping off the Palm app, PSRC wouldn't have much legal recourse. And OJ was INNOCENT, right Mike???The_Voice_of_Reason @ 4/2/2005 1:03:19 AM #

All of you dismiss Haitani's hard work too lightly. A shame. Mike, you have the most florid case of Korsakoff's psychosis that I've seen in a while. Please post more. Your posts have all the features of a horrific car crash. Tragic, yes - yet disturbingly difficult to look away from. Your latest flight of fancy (right up there with the Palm "skin" on Linux) would have people believe that ONLY Palm is able to create simple PIM apps. As usual, you are WRONG. And by the way, your sauna buddy, Kutaragi was last spotted working as a Wal-Mart greeter a few days ago in Fargo, North Dakota. The brightest stars always burn out the fastest. Probably explains why you're so old...
Press release: CUPERTINO, California — February 11, 2005 — Apple® announced today that Steve Jobs will begin selling his own feces to Apple Cultists beginning March 1. Apple's new iPoo™ lineup is expected to easily surpass the iPod shuffle as the company's most popular product. Yes, Apple Cultists can already easily create their own iPoo™, but feces didn't seem cool until Jobs told them it was cool. To the eejit with the Battlestar Galactica name: All a poll would probably "prove" is that some other eejits would agree with you. To the meatpacker stalker: Do you ever add ANYTHING to a discussion other than your obsession with ME? Pathetic wanker. Two people who haven't accomplished anything denigrating the efforts of someone who *has*. What a bellylaugh. RE: Ok who will be first toRhinoSteve @ 4/4/2005 3:39:57 PM #

I listened in on the earnings call, some of the highlights were:

Gald to hear positive stuff here. I guess I pre-empted the nay-sayers. :-) RE: PalmSource Conference Call Notes
Sometimes it seems like a Shaklee convention here.... nice that the stock goes up and down... ...but from a PalmOS user's viewpoint I only care that they get it together and recover enough to do some real innovation and fixing of the core applications before my only "choice" is an Ipaq Pez dispenser or a Dell whatever... Hey Palm(source)... it's been nearly 10 years, can we PLEASE have more than 4k memos and 1:1 Outlook syncing BEFORE you go running all over to linux and whatever other pie-in-the-sky ideas seem to pop into your heads every year....? It's like Palmsource and their compatriots are driving a car with bald tires in the snow and spending all the time focusing on the fact the air conditioner isn't pumping out enough cold air.... RE: PalmSource Conference Call Notesm130fullbutcontent @ 4/2/2005 3:52:26 AM #
Don't know about the Outlook thing, but - correct me if I'm wrong anyone - the 4k Memo size limit was exceeded or rather improved upon with OS 5.2.1 was it not ? Take a look at the tests pages on this here website. :-)

PalmSource Report, translated:The_Voice_of_Reason @ 4/1/2005 1:50:54 AM #
I put this report through Babelfish (http://world.altavista.com/) and it turns out that...
- Total revenue declined 20% - Licensees shipped 30% fewer devices running PalmOS - Shipments of smartphones doubled - The most innovative licensee walked away from the table ----------------------------------------------------------- - 400,000 people have registered as developers with PalmSource. The vast majority of these people did so to either obtain a (legal) copy of the PalmOS ROM or to take advantage of hardware deals offered to "developers". - The Treo 650 got a rejection notice - PalmSource's Cobalt Salvage Operation (CSO) is underway - Vaporware is still alive and kicking - "We can't beat RIM, so we'll join 'em!"

RE: Fire Nagel Now
Agreed. Cobalt is similar in many ways to Apple's Copland OS of 10 years ago. What we have here is real-life Sisyphus. RE: Fire Nagel Now
And not even three weeks ago Gekko was hyperactively ecstatic -- nay, manic! -- because he thought Nintendo had licensed POS... Give us a break, lizard! RE: Fire Nagel Now
If PIC had permalinks to individual Comments, I'd link to your ecstatic post of recent vintage...
What PalmSource needs is better leadership, better staffing, better organization, better everything. What the Webmaster mentioned on one of his posts really showed that things need to be done on a Made-To-Order basis. If there was a Cobalt device popping up in one of our shelves since December, then PalmSource would not have experienced any losses.
Seriously, a Pop Stockholder (Unplanned Stockholder) meeting is necessary to discipline the current Board of Directors.

The fact that digital choices were not wiped off the face of the Earth as a consequence of some pathetic choices is a miracle. The fact that many are still working to build an interactive digital industry is a testament to the will of all like-minded people.
When choosing to innovate one may suffer some set backs that is a fact of life. Digital is the only medium where our thoughts can be counted. The digital world is here to stay. The new "World Order" is people telling us what they want their digital choices to look like, sound like and well the forbidden word(s). Digital Freedom the "New World Order". The new world is still as competitive as always as long as democracy is a choice too. The pioneers are always remembered and respected even when they get really BIG.
