Shipping estimate...

m130fullbutcontent @ 2/14/2008 2:50:13 PM # Q
One popular UK web retailer is already selling it at a lower price (£179.95 plus delivery) and estimate shipping in one working day from order....here's the link :

http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=162933

Tempting if your looking to buy a Palm smartphone compared to £254.95 for the Treo 680 on the same website (£15 more for the crimson model..

Unless you already have a '680 that is.

(Treo 500 shows at £244.95 with 7 day shipping estimate upon order).

I just placed an order thru the UK eXpansys site and went thru no problem. Note that there is no VAT on foreign orders so you can cover the shipping charges. The confirmation said shipping in 1 day. More later.

Order made...finally! Finally??!

palmmax @ 2/14/2008 10:12:25 PM # Q
Hi, I finally made my Centro order on Palm store. But buying it was only a half smile because if you advertise your product will be on sale on the 14th for me that means from 00.01 of that day! Am I too extreme?

Well, I've waited patiently until morning of the 14th and still the "coming the 14th" was on Palm site...late morning...lunch time...well, at lunch time you could access the shop and get a Centro but the shopping button was giving a "Bad Request (400) Your request to the server could not be understood. Please check to ensure that the request you made is correct."!!!
Palm was updating the site...30 minutes later everything was fine, order made and it will ship in 3/4 working days.

So, it was a half smile because at the end I was almost to the point to make my mind and stop buying Palm at all. Are Palm european managers lazy or is it Palm as a whole not interested in selling its products? You don't need people up at night to keep your shops open dear Palm! This is the internet era and all you need is a running server. So, what is the excuse to update your shopping site only late during the day? Is it professional to make all the shopping site un-available for half an hour because you are updating it...14 hours late off schedule?

I owned Palm Treo 600/650/680/750. The passage from Treo 680 to Treo 750 was motivated by my feeling I needed a modern os...six months later my Treo 750 found its place on eBay because even if updated to WinMo 6 the os is way too slow for me (often I lost incoming phone calls because WinMo refused to swich from a phone call to another!!).

So, here I am back at Palm Os waiting next year for the new interaction...once you were the todays Apple of the mobile gadgets...now you seems more like...the Atari of the "Fall of the videogames era".
Please Palm, execute well you plans and keep your promises!

cool, too bad they are not in Iceland, have to travel to London again, (*^&). my treo 650 is slowly dying........

palmmax @ 2/16/2008 3:56:43 AM # Q
Oh well, I am in Italy actually!!! Anyway by my experience buying online the Treo 680, Palm has deposits somewhere in Europe (Germany or Ireland I suppose) so the shipping time to anywhere in almost always the same.

I choosed the Centro because I've used it in US and I found it really nice. Even the small keyboard is so much better than the Nokia style T9.

And something that I really like is the fact that this new unlocked Centro is having the new phone application (the one in the Treo 680) and not the classic one present on the Treo 650.

Ah, finally I can install again all the applications I missed in the last six months (while I was using the WinMo Treo 750): Agendus (the WinMo is not the same), YourCall, Kinoma, Pennovate Notes, Filez, all the Splash suite, PalmaryClock, BugMe! and so many others. Oh, I would like to thank all the programmers for their time spent to make so many great applications for the Palm OS and I really hope next iteraction of the Palm OS would revive this great community because we really deserve this from Palm Inc.

For the moment I'll try also Palm Revolt to refresh the user interface of my little Centro...any user has used it? How is it?

I'll let you now as it arrives how great it is!!!

Ciao!

Unavailable in EU - pre-order impossible

odkin @ 2/16/2008 7:32:22 AM # Q
It seems only UK citizens are allowed to pre-order.

I've tried ordering the Centro from Denmark so many times now - no luck - and I keep getting a shop where there's no Centro or 404 error or finally it's available for pre-order but when getting to the checkout point (perhaps 10th time now these past three days) I get the:

We are sorry that our site is temporarily unavailable, please try again later. Alternatively the Palm eStore team are available on 0845 090 0265 and via customerservice.en@palm.com to answer your queries on Palm products and how to order.

Note that this is _after_ you go through the ordering details.
I've tried calling that number. They say no units are avaiable anywhere in Europe and I can only wait for the webpage to be functional. They'll mail me when (pre)ordering is possible and Centro units are finally here.

Not sure it's appropriate that Palm takes a swipe at RIM ("And more importantly, no nationwide blackouts.") when they can't deliver the phones or even take pre-orders in Europe three days after launching.

I think perhaps Palm has no Q&A department checking their customer experience (at least outside the US).

Cheers
- David

palmmax @ 2/16/2008 1:29:35 PM # Q
Hi David, as I posted before I am in Italy and the order has been accepted the 14th...actually it was not a pre-order but a real order having Palm answered with the mail that I copy here. Note that close to the code of the Centro it is written "Disponibile" that means "available" and few words after it is written it will be shipped in 3/4 days.
I hope the difficult people may find ordering is due to people mass ordering it!!!!!
Anyway you are right about the mixed feeling with Palm Inc. here in Europe...as it happen with japanese and american companies, the service in their homeland and here are far apart and different. I feel managers coming from abroad to Europe feel they are always on holidays and are not working as they should do...and when the managers are european they don't want to work the japanese/american way because they feel superior...it's not always this way but as Palm I had experiences with other companies expecially japanese and they are completely different from what they are in Japan.
Cheers!

I hardly think Denmark is mass ordering :) - Danish carriers have hardly ever heard of Treo phones. E.g. automatic clock and time zone doesn't work on Treo phones with most of Danish carriers - and MMS works with only some Danish carriers. All Nokia phones work perfectly here though.

I was told by phoning the European Palm eStore that there're no units yet.

If units are in fact available, they've obviously given me the wrong information and the Danish webshop must be unavailable simply due to a bug they haven't discovered.

I think I'll mail Palm about the Danish web store being broken.

Cheers

David, you where right. I've written to Palm today asking to know the delivery time and they said no Centro available in Europe at thr moment...the e-mail I received saying "Centro available"...unfortunately...was an automatic reply.
So, no Centro...no party!!

RE: Unavailable in EU - pre-order impossible
odkin @ 2/20/2008 3:27:33 PM # Q
In the Palm Store _still_ it cearly states Centro is on stock/available (with a green V).

Obviously Palm has big problems with delivering - here one week after Centro launch in Europe and there's no stock even though their web store says so - and for some countries the Palm Store doesn't work - not even for take preorders (even though there's big "PRE-ORDER" sign - and "ORDER" below the info page) - it's still temporarily unavaiable at the checkout point...

It's positive that Palm doesn't reject this fact when you phone the Palm Store though :) - I guess the Palm production factories, the web store developers and the marketing guys doesn't talk - not sync'ed lately :) - oh and support too (claiming Centro and Treo 680 has 3G-UMTS :)

Oh and did you notice that the latest Palm Desktop 6.2.2 - which is now recommended by Palm - is a downgrade og v4.1.4? - it lacks functionality such as right-clicking an event and directly change Categories - and category colors are gone too... oh and Ctrl+S takes forever (v4.1.4 was instant)... I've seen no new featues in 6.2.2 - only interface changes and less functionality... what's the idea of upgrading then? I can't it out and Palm Support can't tell my why I should upgrade (they advice a downgrade).

Nooo...I made the order from Italy the 14th and nothing and you, my dear L, got it in Spain? GGrrrrhhhh, Palm, lovely Palm, am I nervous for that? Yes!
Is there a solution? Probably not. And David, you are completely right...Palm production factories, the web store developers and the marketing guys don't talk to each other. I remember when I broke my 680 and while one office said to wait a month the other already sent a new one few days earlier!!!
Today I write to Palm...!

order got through

odkin @ 2/23/2008 6:32:19 AM # Q
Last thursday - exactly one week after launch - the palm store accepted orders on the phone (in UK). The Danish Web Store still doesn't work ("Bad Request (400)...") as has been the case the past week and a half.

I phoned the Palm store a couple of minutes later and bought another Centro (I needed two) and the order number had gone up more than 20...

In short - Stock's in europe is now available at last through phone only :)
