If you are going to report on something that I have already posted on, you should probably report all of the details as they affect the Palm OS using community. The important detail that comes to mind is that Samsung is halting development of Palm OS based handhelds. That is pretty important and newsworthy, no?!?! RE: Ummm...
I'm trying to get that information confirmed before I report on it. I am not positive it is correct, especially considering samsung currently produces the i539 for China. RE: Ummm...gfunkmagic @ 8/19/2005 2:48:14 PM #
>>>>One notable exception is the Palm OS 5 Samsung SCH-i539, which is currently being offered in mainland China... A variation of the i550/i539 has also been released in the Mexican market as well fyi!! Also, most of the statements claiming samsung has abandoned the palmos market come from posts in the forums over at pdaphonehome. While some of the sources there are reliable, it should NOT be considered as official imo... RE: Ummm...archie@PIC @ 8/19/2005 3:55:56 PM #
Very well. But they have stopped all R&D on Palm OS products and yesterday they announced their first Symbian OS based smartphones. Check up on that will you. Buh bye!The_Voice_of_Reason @ 8/19/2005 5:19:07 PM #
PalmSource statement this week: "Outlook for fiscal year 2006: We anticipate revenue will be negatively impacted on a year-over-year basis by factors such as Sony’s exit from the PDA market, the pre-pay of one licensee’s royalty minimum, and the expiration of certain prepaid royalties that were being amortized on a quarterly basis." The Palm Economy = Communism™ RE: Ummm...
That's OK. We still have treo. As long as there is no WM version treo, we should be safe. Even there is Samsung PALM version smartphone, the selling number won't be that rosy and has very little effect on the PALM OS future. RE: Ummm...
"While some of the sources there are reliable, it should NOT be considered as official" Do you really need an official statement? The Samsung devices have not sold in signficant numbers and Samsung isn't pushing this technology or making new announcements. Is quietly dying off different from an official exit? RE: Ummm...
Who's next to leave?? More like...WHO'S LEFT?!? Seriously, we have Symbol (who've been coasting along in neutral for years now) and Garmin set to "any day now" announce the "strategic consolidation" of their GPS PDA iQue line mode. LG is a non-starter. So you have Palm, GSPDA, Qool and a bunch of vaporour agreements on the PalmSource site. That's it. RE: Ummm...

What if they just diddle around for the next several years selling a trickle of unsold inventory from the warehouse? Renaming some of the models for specific markets and organizations? I was probably hallucinating last week when I saw LG had signed up as a licensee, right? RE: Ummm...
Or even hinted at any hardware. Right now LG's involvement with Palm OS amounts to an expression of interest, that's all. RE: Ummm...gfunkmagic @ 8/21/2005 2:11:05 PM #
>>>>>Umm, what if they *never* make an official statement? What if they just diddle around for the next several years selling a trickle of unsold inventory from the warehouse? If Samsung has indeed pulled out from its PalmOS commitments, then Ryan here should first INDEPENDENTLY verify it through his own sources before declaring it as fact! Also what if you are wrong and Samsung has not left PalmOS? What kind of damage could that do the the credibility of PIC? Just state rumors as rumors until you can prove it... RE: Ummm...
>>Or even hinted at any hardware. Right now LG's involvement with Palm OS amounts to an expression of interest, that's all. No - they are a 'licensee'. Correct me if I am wrong in my understanding, but that means they have signed a license agreement with palmsource to use and pay for the OS. The OS agreement that PS uses is not purely baed on a price 'per unit solds' - there is a minimum amount licensees must guarantee. That is my understanding based on several articles / interviews over the few years on the subject. If things have changed (i.e. PS is desperate and so they are willing to make terms better to attract companies) then i have heard. RE: Ummm...
No - they are a 'licensee'. Correct me if I am wrong in my understanding, but that means they have signed a license agreement with palmsource to use and pay for the OS. LG have obtained the right to see the Palm OS source. At this stage they haven't agreed to use Palm OS in any products. The OS agreement that PS uses is not purely baed on a price 'per unit solds' - there is a minimum amount licensees must guarantee. LG have paid a notional sum to obtain technical information about Palm OS and haven't committed themselves to using it. Hence their current involvement amounts to an expression of interest. All licensee are not forced to release devices - but they do pay out a set sum of $$$ regardless. LG is in exactly the same position (agreement-wise) that every Palm OS licensee who ever manufacturewd devices was in initally (Sony, taopwave, etc). You state they are not a licensee and that there are no plans for devices. Maybe you have inside information that contradicts the joint PalmSource LG press release:

If things have changed (i.e. PS is desperate and so they are willing to make terms better to attract companies) then i have heard. Yes they are desperate. You may recall Palm negotiating a dramatic lowering of the guaranteed minimum when they extended their contract a few months ago. Also, Sony renegotiated as well and only pays PalmSource a couple hundred thousand $$$ per quarter for their "license". [SARCASM]Maybe PalmSource should BEG HandEra to come back now that they've changed their mind regarding how much of a commitment is required to remain a PalmOS licensee?[/SARCASM] ;-O

>>[SARCASM]Maybe PalmSource should BEG HandEra to come back now that they've changed their mind regarding how much of a commitment is required to remain a PalmOS licensee?[/SARCASM] Yes - just what I thinking earlier in this thread: Handera got out because PS upped the fees to reflect what they thought was Palm OS's new, 'big-time' status - what with Sony beginning to make waves and all. >What kind of retarded reasoning is that? How is that in any way responsible journalism for site like PIC? I've never said that Samsung has pulled out of Palm and I don't suggest making false statements. PIC should be in the business of reporting the facts and they have done this properly. PIC and Ryan do a great job in reporting the facts not the rumors. Listen to my true statements: Samsung IS a Palm OS licensee; this is legally true. But there is nothing new to buy at the store. While this information is unpleasant, it is true and applies to a number of Palm OS licensees. Why are you so offended by my pointing this out? RE: Ummm...

Who cares. Samsung makes very pretty stuff, but it's crap. IT breaks way too easily and then they refuse to repair it properly. Samsung Electronics America is on the BBB's **** list, and I can't imagine any intelligent person buying Samsung more than once. RE: Samsung? Who cares? I do/did.The_Voice_of_Reason @ 8/19/2005 9:42:21 PM #
I don't know about their other phones, but Samsung's PalmOS phones were actually the best smartphones I've used. It really is a shame they never released any of the later designs in North America - they were quite solid. None of the people (4) I know with SPH-i500 have anything but positive things to say about it. If only it had an SD slot, I would have kept the one I tried out a couple years ago. TVoR The Palm Economy = Communism™ RE: Samsung? Who cares.
Although Qualcom was first to market with a plam os phone (remember the pdq brick?) and they later sold that biz to kyocera who refined it further in the form of the QCP 6035, it was samsung who was the first to get it almost right (about as right as 90% of all smartphones today) with the SPH i300. By 'right' i mean they were the first to make a usable, reasonably ergonomic, half-decent looking smartphone that had a great design, interface, and features (first palm os phone with a color screen - and virtual graffiti no less) - all way back 4 yrs ago in 2001.
Samsungs naming conventions have always been insane - now they now have a SGH i300 running wretched windows mobile smartphone (if it doesn't have touchscreen - it ain't a smartphone in my books). craptastic.
This is a shame. I loved the form factor. I don't want/need a thumboard - I'd rather have REAL telephone keys.

RE: Die PocketPC Die!!!!! http://www.palminfocenter.com/comment_view.asp?ID=2880#33427 RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?
IF this is true then it proves correct what I predicted back in June: -First LD was for PAYING beta testers (ie early adopters) to snatch up and give Palm valuable feedback and part of a limited production run (intentionally so). -A slightly refreshed model will arrive this fall ("Palm" branding, a 5 or 6gb Microdrive, probably a larger battery, and OS 5.4.9) and will provide at least a decently better experience than the first LD. -Yet another LifeDrive--this one with a 6 or 8gb Microdrive will arrive sometime in '06 running WinMob and/or Cobalt. It will have vastly superior hardware to the FrankenGarnet LifeDrives but will be totally shunned by the marketplace as nearly everyone will be on the smartphone market by that point. Original LifeDrives are probably indeed already out of production but plenty of units remain in the channel to last through Christmas. I've been surprised to see how many large brick & mortar US retail chains just have one or two LDs in stock at any given time----vs. scores of Zire 31s, T|E2s etc. It's like the LD was never indended to sell in any considerable numbers--recall the delayed/late rollout and lack of widespread retail availability upon its announceent. Treo 650 discontinued?
Don't know if this is a sign or what, but.... http://discussion.treocentral.com/showthread.php?p=782151#post782151 RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?
It could theoretically make sense: A DRASTIC paring down of the Palm-powered line to a Treo, a LifeDrive, and a cheap Zire or Tungsten. Remember those rumors that the Zire line was being discontinued a few months back? Or Palm might end up doing the two-OS shuffle: Cheap Zire: Garnet RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?AdamaDBrown @ 8/22/2005 12:44:42 PM #
I would HAVE to think that this is an error on Amazon's part. To adopt such a short product life for an expensive gadget like the LD would be insane. RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?
Like many others, I am profoundly disappointed with Palm's latest release, the Life Drive Mobile Manager. There are many positive reviews posted here, but the majority of them are from users who are relatively new to the Palm PDA line. With reviews like this on the Amazon sales page, and if this is indicative of the real return rate, P1 may have been forced to discontinue, due to the fundamental design error of using a HDD as main memory. Surur RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?
I have never seen a single P1/Palm device bring out the Palm Apologists in LOCUST-LIKE numbers as the LifeDrive has. I mean, on Brighthand's forums, my experiences with TWO LDs in barebones, stock configurations (frequent crashing, hiccups, randon resets etc) were dismissed, ignored, and written off as "user errors". The sooner this half-baked device is taken off store shelves the better. I suspect Palm realizes that it cannot be patched and the entire concept of the LD is simply beyond the means of poor ol' FrankenGarnet. If the LD is what Hawkins was alluding to in that previous interview, (as I suspect it is) the whole "Mobile Manager" concept still remains full of intriguing possibilities. However, it'll require a robust set of hardware & an OS that's up to the task. Palm overreached for the LD, plain'n simple. They should have first had the logical followup to the t3 last fall, a "T7/T5" with integrated wi-fi, BT, and a voice recorder in a sliderless formfactor. THAT could've been followed up by a larger formfactor unit this spring with similar specs but SDIO & CF slots so that the user could add a 4gb MicroDrive IF they desired it or a 4gb CF card IF they valued reliability & speed over $ per mb value. Again, Handera & Sony did it years ago so there's no excuse for Palm other than usual cheapness/greed/arrogance/laziness etc. I'd really like to see ballpark figures from a major retailer(s) on LD sell-thru numbers and return % as well. If it's anything like what I've heard, Palm's going to have a mountain of 'em in their refurb store on Overstock.com in the coming months. RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?AdamaDBrown @ 8/22/2005 5:47:33 PM #
Big mistake. Bad Developer. No cookie for you. Despite being a cliche, this line just cracked me up. I can't figure why. Anyway, Palm is now saying that the Amazon listing is in error, and that the LD isn't being discontinued. RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?
The Amazon listing is an error. The LifeDrive has not been discontinued. I confirmed with a Palm rep. RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?
The Amazon listing is an error. Darn. I had gotten all worked up about nothin'. RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?
I just got off the phone with Palm and spoke to a sales rep. They were telling me that the LifeDrive is absolutely discontinued. This is a fact! They did not give me a reason why tho. RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?
WOW! 2 years later, an update on a topic. Honestly, I'd thought Palm had already discontinued the LifeDrive. Talk about a device with a huge amount of potential, but poor execution. Oh well, goodbye! RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?
The LifeDrive was confirmed to be discontinued in January: http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/9214/lifedrive-no-longer-available-from-palm/ RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?
So, I wonder where Palm buried all the left over Lifedrives? ... maybe next to all the millions of E.T. Atari 2600 in the New Mexico desert? RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?
Are you kidding? Buried? They've SOLD OUT. Seriously, here in NYC J&R has sold all they had, so has Staples. The only places with them are those gray-market stores that rip off tourists. CompUSA has been out for months and months and months. RE: LifeDrive Discontinued?
I saw my last LD at retail back in March or February or so.
The closest Compusa had an open box clearance one for quite a while. I knew it was doomed when Palm rebranded the last batch of Treo 650s last year alongside the Tungsten E2. When the LD was still wearing the old PalmOne clothes months later, I knew it was a goner.
