Sucks!

Foo Fighter @ 9/1/2005 1:38:35 PM # Q
Palm Desktop (Mac) is a piece of crapware. I use Entourage. Even using Apple's own iCal, Address Book, etc., with iSync is much better solution.

I can't say the Windows client is much better either. Unless primitive Windows 3.1 era application interfaces are your thing.

apparently someone doesn't understand, we are not talking about the addressbook, to do, and calendar apps within palm desktop here. The update addresses some problems with isync, and other general issues. Even with Entourage, Missing Sync, or Isync, parts of palm desktop make those things possible.

Personally, I have never used the Palm Desktop apps, but we all use some of its "guts" to do everything else!

No, some of us use Missing Sync which replaces all of Palm's crapware.

Not to continue this pointless discussion, but as I said, the guts of Palm desktop are needed, even to use MissingSync (surely, everyone that uses MissingSync should know that). Thats why this palm desktop upgrade is a GOOD thing. Not for the apps, but for the continued support by palm.

Now on to more important issues:)

I knew I forgot something. If anyone feels they don't NEED palm desktop at all, try deleting all of its parts. THEN try to sync with iSync, or MissingSync, or anything else!

Apparently this discussion is needed. I have tried it! But... apparently... you haven't

I set up a brand new system starting completely from scratch without ever putting anything on it from PalmSource. Just iSync and The Missing Sync is all you need. There is NO part of the Palm Desktop that is needed... for anything... not even Hot Sync.

It was way better too. Lots of scriptable dictionary items, Much improved sync speed, the ability to choose profiles, higher level of integration, vastly improved interface... blah, blah, blah.

On a side note. Does PIC report exclusively on Palm news as it only effects Macs now? I ask because Palm also released a new Windows version that actually includes more than a simple fix. Yes, it has actually been updated, along with the Outlook conduit that they include and also the new VersaMail 3.0 conduit.

Rather than argue with me, go argue with MarkSpace. Here is a quote from the MissingSync support page.

"Missing Sync for Palm OS v4 requires Palm OS 4.x or higher and native USB support."

Over and out.

It's too bad that the Missing Sync doesn't include any replacement conduits for the built-in Palm apps. It replaces Palm Desktop's horrendous synchronization engine, but unfortunately it still relies on Apple's iSync conduits. Therefore, one cannot use Calendar or Tasks categories without Palm Desktop. Unfortunately, Palm Desktop remains relevant for Mac users who require category functionality but don't want to use Microsoft Entourage.

I can also confirm that I installed no Palm software, and sync with MissingSync and iSync.

I read about all the difficulties people had with the Mac Palm software, and decided to go straight to MarkSpace/Missing Sync on my new iMac.

Orca, my calendar syncs to Apples iCal.

You all indeed are correct. I checked with Mark/Space, and the recent versions (going back some way) do NOT need Palm Desktop to sync with Ical, add book, Entourage, etc.

I was BLATANTLY wrong:)

Could someone please explain how to sync a Palm with the Mac applications without the Palm Desktop. Also, wihtout the Palm Desktop, how does one install new programs to the Palm? It would be great to delete all of the Palm Desktop software, however, I have no idea how to set up another syncing system.

jamesgood72, how do you manage calendar and tasks categories between iSync and the Palm? I've been under the impression that categories are not synchronized at all between the two?

Thanks to MonkeyMike! This is a much better solution than Palm Dektop.

Yes, does anybody know how to manage the categories, as orca has already asked: "jamesgood72, how do you manage calendar and tasks categories between iSync and the Palm? I've been under the impression that categories are not synchronized at all between the two?"

I also found out that not every adress was synched correctly or fully to the Apple Adress Book. Does anybody have an idea how this works?

I would like to know if anyone has been able to sync calendar to do items to a palm
device , keeping their calendar category....they all seem to get dumped into an unfiled category.

Do I want this upgrade?

MTM @ 9/1/2005 2:21:16 PM # Q
So, I went to the Palm site, and told them I had a Palm IIIxe, which is the closest one on the list to a Handera 330, which is what I use. (I was gonna upgrade to a Zodiac, but....) Anyway, they want me to use Revision A, not Revision C.

I am using OS X 10.4.2.

Do I upgrade to Revision C anyway? Suggestions?

Mike

I have a Tungsten T3 and the link also took me to the Rev. A Web page. Is the link correct?

nibble70 @ 9/2/2005 5:11:44 AM # Q
I've seen the same behaviour using T3 as palm model.
It seems that you only get to the Rev.C software download if you use a newer model (try with T5).

My question is: have I to install this new release or keep my current Rev.A (it works with Tiger and I've not seen problems).

nibble,

If the version you're currently using works, then do not upgrade. Thee are no new features, just bug fixes. So if you're having no problems do not upgrade. That would just be asking for trouble.

In other words, if it works, don't fix it. Why would you want to upgrade anyway...?
