Comments on: Palm Launches New Mobile Portal Page

A new version of Palm’s Mobile Portal for Palm devices utilizing the Blazer web browser quietly went live over the past weekend. Logging on to the mobile.palm.com default home page in the evening of Sunday the 4th, revealed a face lifted Palm mobile portal. I was using on a Verizon 700p with Blazer 4.5.

Blazer 4.3

It is frustrating that Palm never released an update to Blazer 4.3 for TX users, given the improved file-type handling of Blazer 4.5. :shakehead:

In terms of their mobile "portal", Palm needs some online "services" for Palm users instead of a bunch of crappy links. Here's an example of a crappy link: I bought the Palm bluetooth keyboard, forgot the driver CD at work, used Blazer to connect to the Palm support pages via the mobile portal but COULD NOT download the keyboard prc because Blazer couldn't get past the "I Agree" page to kick off the file download. Palm just doesn't "get" mobile computing.

That's terrible on Palm's part. Palm should have a handy guide of mobile-formatted support pages with the most recent PRC for each device driver (keyboards etc) available to download.

Actually, Palm doesn't "get" either the wireless mobile side of the experience nor, as evidenced by the horrible neglected state of Palm Desktop (especially in regards to Vista & newer variants of XP such as MCE), do they get the desktop side of the experience.

I wonder how many legitimate sales Palm is losing out on by not offering the latest versions of Blazer/VersaMail to users of the TX/E2/LD/650/700p...probably a fairly considerable amount.

If Palm's going to neglect stuff like PalmDesktop and the forever-in-beta MyPalm portal, they should at least try to beef up the # of links contained within their own Mobile Portal and/or patner up with someone like Kinoma to add at least a handful of solid, Blazer-friendly streaming media & interesting content sites.

And don't forget that Palm/supplier just stopped the service from Addit that was downloading top news stories. I also use AvantGo so it was not a critical loss but when you continue to loose features and see new units coming to market you do have to finally say time is up and I no longer want to support old technology.

I held out on color for a long time but now I do not know if they even sell a gray screen only unit but Palm I beleive was the last to the table. I have been loyal to Palm for a number of years starting with the IIIx but I do not think Palm is in my future.

Hmmm, I didn't know that. So do you mean that the Addit serviers are no longer pushing news headlines etc to Palm devices running Addit? Or do you mean that Palm has just stoppped shipping the Addit client on their newest devices? I really am stunned that AvantGo has managed to hang in there this long, actually.

Palm hasn't produced a greyscale-only device since the Zire 21 of 2003.

I suspect that most PalmOS users don't even know that Addit exists. I still use Avantgo on my LifeDrive since it's a quick, easy way to load a lot of content on it for offline reading. I don't bother with Addit, since I can already do the same thing with Avantgo which has all my channels and also functions as a web browser. Maybe that is why they stopped updating the Addit headlines in the first place. With more and more people using Treos and with older PDAs like the LifeDrive and TX being wifi-enabled, there isn't much need for web-clipping applications and the few people that still use them are old-timers who are much more likely to use Avantgo.

While I agree that a Blazer update ought to be available for the TX, I did get the new mobile portal page to show up when I checked this morning...

Yup, I also noticed that when I logged in early this AM. Glad to see it's not just a Centro/Treo-only thing.
