A me too product now...

Wollombi @ 1/2/2006 1:42:26 PM # Q
It's sad. Picsel really could have made major points by releasing this as soon as Sonly abandoned PDA's. Instead, they waited until DataVis and others have something similar to offer, especially with the .pdf support. It's really too bad as the "Picsel Browser" that people hacked for Palms was actually a nice piece of software when it worked. I can only imagine that an official release will be high quality. I imagine it will still sell, but they really missed a great opportunity here.

Note the timing. It could be that Picsel could not release this product until now for they were under some sort of exclusive contract with Sony, which just expired.

^^ that's what I was thinking too.

Sure, Picsel could've swept the market and left DTG in the dust, but frankly, it still could. It looks like they ahve a quality product there, they just needs to fill the marketing/advertising void. Sure, pOS HHs (handhelds) come with DTG, but some ppl wanting TRUE PDF compatibility will either flock to DTG8 Premium edit. for an extra $30 or could just try out this. THERE IS *NO* WAITING AROUND FOR PDF TO BE BUNDLED WITH PALM HHs. PDF is only avaialable on DTG8 >Premium edition<, and all handhelds were came with Professional edition or Standard.

Even for those who do NOT want PDF, assuming Piscel is that robust in its entirety as a suite, that ain't a bad price. These days, it's not uncommon to see ppl switch from DTG to QuickOffice for the fonts, better handling of functions, and alternative features.

Potter,

That's exactly what I was thinking. January 2nd, the first "business" day of the new year seems mighty strange for a release date unless a 12/31/05 agreement is in place.

Just the Acrobat Reader itself could have built them a cash pipeline. Dataviz most likely knew this too and were able to get theirs to market in time.

Hi,
as said below...

This is JUST A DAMN VIEWER! This means, no editing,... whatsoever. DocumentsToGo, MobiSystems Office(why nobody ever mentions this, I like it).

So, essentially, I dare to post the question about how much success this product will have now. Or, how much sucess it could have had after DocsToGo6/the other native format suites shipped..

Best regards

No Demo, nor can you apparently even BUY it...

joad @ 1/2/2006 2:40:23 PM # Q
I just checked, and though the site would lead you to believe there is a demo available as well as the opportunity to purchase, there's NO demo link.

The link to "purchase" sends you over to Handango where you get the message: "'Picsel Proviewer' is currently unavailable and cannot be purchased."

The hacked version showed promise on the T650, and if this product does all it claims for $30 then I'm in (all the memory problems with Documents to Go have been making me ill).

Any idea when this product will leave the vaporware stage and REALLY become available? Licensing restrictions with SONY (the 'rootkit' people) sound very plausible.

I guess there is no Demo link because they are not prepared to sell yet, and much less are they prepared to handle a storm of phone calls and emails from people who tried the Demo and can't wait to buy.

Yes, if it's as good as the hacked Clie version, it's THAT good.

I like how a Tungsten T3 is shown on their homepage but it is not listed as a supported device.

Still has some refinement to go AFIAK. Even when PalmPDF does mature and kicks ass, it never hurts for the consumer to have some extra, healthy competition

This is only a viewer

pascanu @ 1/2/2006 6:20:08 PM # Q
I'll stick with DTG, since as far as I understand from the Picselviewer website this is only a viewer for documents.

Handspring Visor -> m505 -> Zire71 -> Zire72 -> Treo650

If that's true, it may be impractical to spend +$30, but it does do PDF viewing VERY well, as well as possibly other things too.

no demo = no sale

Galley_SimRacer @ 1/4/2006 7:19:24 AM # Q
Why would I shell out $30 for something I can't even demo?

I think the better question is why shell out $30 for something you can't even buy.

If you could buy it, reasons include:
-so many ppl bought it for so many models that it's been proven to be stable
-many good user and editorial reviews
-dev has a good reputation for customer service
-dev's policy is 100% satisfaction for its customers

But yeah, otherwise, lack of demos, even very stingy ones (altho some would argue that even stingy demos are as worthless as no demos) is quite a turnoff.
